2016-17 NBA PLAYOFFS THREAD

Golden State hasnt payed a LT the last 3 years man. A small market team could have done what they did. So far it has nothing to do with there market size. They drafted extremely well, found a great coach, and got lucky their transcendent super-star had some bad ankles and blew up after he signed a bargain contract. They did all that so well it attracted a super-star who was tired of playing in an isolation "my turn/your turn" system who happens to be one of the best scorers of all time. It's just a lot of freak occurrences that will probably never happen again. Enjoy it while it's here and dont cry about it too much. Golden State and Cleveland had been terrible franchises for decades, so you got your wish of seeing different teams at the top of the NBA pecking order.

Yeah but they did went and got Durant and Durant joined them because he knows GSW will be willing to pay the Luxury Tax going forward.

On the other hand OKC has had to trade away Harden because it didn't want to pay the Tax. Had that been a New York team with Durant, Westbrook and Harden, they would have kept them all and paid the Tax.

Next year, the Dubs will have:

Curry-36.0M
Durant-36.0M--assuming he opts out and re-signs which makes sense (72.0M)
Klay-17.286M (89.286MM)
Draymond-16.4M (105.686M)
McCaw-1.313M (106.999M)
Looney-1.234M (108.233M)
Jones-1.224M (109.457M)

That's just for seven guys. Assuming they re-up some of their own guys (since they'd already be over the cap) and use the MLE, I gotta think they end up somewhere north of 140M. Maybe even 150M.

Klay would still have two years left and Draymond would have one left.

Most playoff teams only play 8 players anyways. A couple of vets will jump on board for the veterans minimum and they will be back in the finals next year.

I doubt teh Knicks want to pay the tax. You dont know a lot about their ownership, do you?

Are you telling had the Knicks had Westbrook, Durant and Harden and they're winning 1-2 titles together, the Knicks (or any big market teams) would be unwilling to pay the Tax to keep those guys together to win more titles?

KD has been terrible the last few years with PR.

But in fairness to him, what's he supposed to say to that? Is he supposed to apologize? Didn't most of us see this coming? The warriors set a record for wins last year. Then they added KD. It's like the 96 bulls after beating down Seattle in the finals adding Malone or Shaq that summer.

He could just stay humble considering he is just a leech.

Maybe something along the lines of "Hey, its unfortunate that we've run into teams who have been injured but we can't take our foot of the gas, we need to stay focused and continue to play our best bball over 4qtrs..."

That fans could handle, the whole "Lump it or Leave it" just irks people, especially coming from that coward.

KD has changed quite a bit since the 'You da real MVP' press conference.

Quite possibly. Their owner only cares about profits, not winning.

Yeah, this sums up my thoughts pretty well. A lot of things went the Warriors way. Curry signing that 4-year $44M deal and Draymond being a 2nd-round pick helped them out the most. They were a 73-win team without Durant and won a title as a team already.

There is no reason to be mad at them for believing in Curry when he had bad ankles and drafting extremely well.

I'm not mad at them currently, they really lucked out with the Curry contract, but I'm mad at them in anticipation going forward if they're able to keep all 4 All Stars and paying the Luxury Tax even with Curry getting a raise.

Hard cap is stupid. I dont agree with putting a limit on how much people can make if people are able to pay them.

There already is a limit, its called the MAX contract.

Hard cap is the way to go, it means FO's have less room for error and will need to be more creative, also teams will be better constructed. Will aso stops players from demanding the MAX when they aren't worth it (looking at you Chandler Parsons).

This.

I don't know why Cy is so hell bent on not wanting a Hard Cap. The biggest beneficiaries of a Hard Cap are small market teams like Utah.

Pretty sure he's just trolling. Either that or he doesn't want the Jazz to succeed.

Yeah, you must just not be a basketball fan.

I was once, I was a huge NBA fan and NCAA. But like I said I've gotten old, and I'm looking for more than what the nba offers. The story lines are predictable and shallow, and league has always been a copy-cat league, so all the games all kind of look the same. I wish I was more into it.

The Jazz hold my interest, so I guess I am a Jazz fan.

Other than you not agreeing, what is bad about the hard cap?

No, Utah would not benefit from a hard-cap. I think hard-caps are too restrictive and I don't like restrictions in labor. If a team is willing to pay to be better, then they should be able to willing they are willing to accept the tax that accompanies it. It makes no business sense for the NBA either. Other teams make more money when the big teams pay insane amounts of luxury tax.

The answer isn't a hard-cap. It's not max contracts and no draft.

How would Utah not benefit? If Super teams cannot fit 4 All Stars in 1 team, those guys have to consider moving to another team to get paid - that would open up other small market options like Utah.

Too restrictive. Makes no business sense for the NBA to do. It would require the NBA to make contracts non-guaranteed (NEVER HAPPENING) so teams could cut contracts. If they couldn't, any mistake in contract negotiations could ruin a franchise for years (way more so than it can now).

I think the NBA should be closer to free market, not restrictive. NBA should stop trying to make parity among 30 teams and cater towards parity towards the teams that are actually good and ran well (see my long post on taking the draft away). That could be done by taking draft and max contracts away.

I already explained the rare set of circumstances that allowed the GSW to happen. It isnt going to happen again, or at least highly unlikely. I dont think the league should punish GSW for running their team properly.

And look, the NBA has their LT set-up in a way that when Draymond and Klay come up on their next contracts, they will likely have to change teams. In the mean time they should be able to enjoy their dominance because they drafted well and outsmarted everyone at the perfect time.

And Utah is a team that has said they are willing to go into the LT. They are a team that benefits from no hard cap. Take your communist hard-cap elsewhere.

Yes, max contracts should not exist and nearly everyone who is smart agrees on that.

I dont believe in limiting what a person can earn if their employer is willing to pay them. It's simple ethics for me.
