DL had a great interview on 1280thezone yesterday. I transcribed some of the main points here. It's worth listening to anyways, some very good questions by PK(I think), he didn't soft-ball him on Dante, on Favs, etc.

Here's some of the interesting points DL made:

- He wishes the draft was after FA...
- A lot of what we want to do cannot be done until July
- We have the most cap room entering the draft. Probably sees it as opportunity for trades?
- They have Jazz draft board and market draft board(what they think the league sees players as)
- They hoped Hayward got all-nba team. At least told GH that.
- they have been intentional in building with size across the board(Favors, Rudy, George Hill, Exum, Ingles, JJ)...
- "competitive clarity"... that's how he described Rudy. He mentioned Rudy talking several years ago about how he's going to win championship with the Jazz, etc and how many of the things he said and seemed unbelievable, he's already achieved. He said Rudy is our ace in recruitment.
- believes we have clear advantage over the league in player development(Rudy,Hayward, Ingles, even Hill having his best season in his 30s with the Jazz). Believes this is another good point to sell to FAs.
- seemed to emphasize internal development(probably don't expect big splashes)...
- wanted Hill for 5 years... was able to get it done just last year.
- want to change the image and narrative around Utah - selling Utah and SLC hard. We don't have to apologize for anything. JJ chose Utah and others will follow. Selling the market as an advantage - one of the best training facilities in the world...
- Even if we lose both Hill and Mack, he feels like we need experience at the PG position
- Excited about the new 2-way contracts
- Likes shooting development we can do with players but sees procuring shooting talented shooters as the best way to get shooting on the team(I hope he's learned his lesson after missing on Booker for Lyles).
- "No question" when asked whether he thinks Favors can go past his injuries. He said Favors healthiest day this season was the last day of the playoffs. No surgical procedure needed He needs just some daily management routine. He also said last year he was not able to work out because he was rehabbing all last summer. He's healthy now and he can train this summer.
- Dante has to use his speed on the wing and his size at the PG. He has to use those advantages better. Has to develop his skills to match his size. "HIS URGENCY NEEDS TO MATCH MINE AND QUIN's URGENCY FOR HIM ... and if he buys in like Gordon bought in last summer... we can develop players with great tools, character, intelligence. He has all those attributes". Talked about what type of PG he can be... said he reminds him of George Hill as a young player. Said Hill had his own deficiency as a young player and look where he's now.
- the expectation is that Joe Ingles will be a long-term member of the Jazz... his development has far exceeded their expectation. Told a story about watching his syndergy videos defending the PnR and were wondering if he's bad in Euroleague, how in hell is he going to defend in the NBA... Said Joe found the right coach to believe in him and yet challenge him in the right way to extract the best of him. They challenged him to get in shape and he did and he's now going to reap the rewards.

(side note - Joe Ingles' agent is the same agent as Hayward's agent... might be helpful in negotiations... the Jazz seem to have great relationship with this agent - agents, players, teams are noticing the way Jazz work with players and develop players. Stories like Joe Ingles are not all that common.)

...the end...

I do not see that as throwing anyone under the bus. He is saying that they have very high expectations for him and if he wants to succeed he will have to match it with work. I can see how one would take it that way but I think DL was stressing the importance of this offseason as much as anything.

Especially like that part about changing the Jazz's image based on location. Having players on other teams lauding the team and city (DWill, Booker, Carroll...) helps with that.

Some cool info, thanks!!

I don't think he's throwing him under the bus. But I think he issued a very strong challenge to him.

Couldn't get the link to come up (probably my end) but appreciate the talking points. I will say that judging by that he doesn't seem overly concerned about possibly losing Hayward. I'm assuming that's what he's alluding to with all the talk about pursuing FAs ourselves. Obviously still considers Exum a special talent that just needs to buy in and commit.

Thanks for the recap, that is tremendous work by stitches.

I was very curious what Lindsey said, but didn't get a chance to listen.

Lindsey said something about most of their growth happening from internal development (rather than acquisitions). That surprised me quite a bit because like many Jazzfanzers I had tucked Dante, Rodney, and Trey Lyles in little boxes and didn't think them capable of becoming more.

Me too. It makes sense on so many levels even if it pushes "Summer league" back to August/September.

A draft in august....

would not distract from the playoffs
allow more European players to come over for workouts/interviews
add more intrigue to free agency and offseason trades

bring it on!

Best post of the offseason so far.
Thanks so much for the summary. We (the Jazz) have a very bright future with this coaching staff and management.

No worries bro. Carry on

Glad to hear that Jazz expect to get better by internal growth and not abandon 21/22 yr old kids that half this board has already done.Besides the lack of game experience a summer of P3/Jazz facility workouts for Exum,Lyles,Hood,Burks and Favors is really needed.I've always felt a healthy Jazz team is the best Defensive team in the NBA and a growing threat offensively IF they speed up the pace of their team with all these young players.

Chrome was warning me about the link so I couldn't bring it up either.

Just go to the 1280 website to listen.

Huh. DL wants Exum to have more urgency. So, it sounds like a mental issue. Weird. Who was it that said the Jazz were worried about Exum mentally? Weird.

Great summary.

I had listened to the interview yesterday. The only thing I would add is that DL compared Favors' injury and maintenance regime to something Tim Duncan was dealing with throughout the latter years of his career (though he kind of stopped himself during the comparison, sounding like he didn't want to say it was exactly the same issue as Duncan had). I thought this was kind of optimistic. Anybody know what Duncan was dealing with?
