A product of Chicago's South Side, DeAvion Gillarm will be the first in his family to attend college.

"I always had a plan," said Gillarm, a Morgan Park High School graduate headed to Lincoln College next month. "You're not going to be successful without a plan."
Under a controversial new requirement, starting in 2020, students hoping to graduate from a public high school in Chicago must provide evidence they, too, have a plan for the future: either acceptance to college or a gap-year program, a trade apprenticeship, military enlistment or a job offer.

I don't get this at all and I completely don't support it. What if my plan is to be a street performer? What if my plan is to be a stay at home parent? What if my plan is to form a paramilitary revolutionary cell? What if I fell off a fence and saw the holy ghost who told me to start my own religion?

I'd be curious what other "plans" the city allows for. Do they support any of which you've said? Frighteningly, I'm not totally against some form of this.

Contrary to stupid belief we do not want everyone in america to become a software engineer or a business person. Without general laborers, service workers, trades and arts and other just as important occupations society will grind to a halt. This is incredibly stupid. What they are looking for is a tiered system similar to most european countries, where students select a track that takes them to an open education (general studies high school equivalent), a trade (such as electrician, plumber, butcher, whatever), or a college education for everything else. If that is what is sought then just do that. But this idea is asinine.

I don't think it matters. I think it's to support the idea that you should have some goal.

I think it's as much for the high school guidance counselors to get them to help kids think beyond high school.

Anyhow, funny that the first I've heard of this is on a Utah basketball message board! I guess I'd better start paying better attention to something beyond the miserable state of Illinois finances!

We are the butt of all jokes these days.

This resonated with me. My best friend attended high school in a poverty stricken rural town in New Mexico where many kids had no ambitions or hopes outside of that town. There was no support given whatsoever to help kids apply for colleges or take the SATs or anything like that.

I'm sad to say there will probably be some some unintended consequences but something like this could be productive if schools are given the resources they need to make it work.

If the gist of it is to get more support for high schoolers to plan out their future and see their options through guidance counselors or whatever then that's great. If they actually prevent students from graduating due to any part of it then it's dumb as hell.

It did mention an apprenticeship as part of having a plan.

Just watch. This will help 95 kids out of 100 and Rush will just whine about the 5...

Yeah but to BP's point why not just build a system that allows kids to choose a well-defined path, even if that path is just general education, rather than withholding something necessary for their future life because they do not have a "plan" that fits some preconceived notion of what a plan should be?

Welcome to the modern world. Where 100 kids who want bathrooms to be boy and girl are called haters and forced to accept boys in the girl's bathroom because of 1 "gender fluid" person in the school, or whatever the current BS is called. The few matter more than the many.

The bathroom issue is so dumb. The bathrooms are all stalls anyways. What a stupid issue.

What, bathrooms will lead to sex in the bathroom?

People will spy on girls in the bathroom? I don't know about you, but what girls do in the bathroom is pretty nasty.

Everything you listed is a plan.

Not according to the article. They need an acceptance letter from a college, not just a plan to go to college, a written job offer, acceptance into an apprenticeship program, military enlistment or a gap-year thing, I have no idea what a gap-year is. They don't just say "I plan to go to college" they need acceptance to a college.
