Panhandling Challenge

There was a panhandler outside of a Panda Express one night and my dad bought the dude a 3 entree and a drink plus tried to give him a $20...dude broke down and cried and said he hadn't had a real meal in 4 days and refused to take my dad's money because he said was going to spend it on drugs and didn't want to disrespect my dad who fed him. **** was a surreal moment.

There was another time my dad bought a guy some food and the guy had the balls to tell my dad he needed money not food and my dad nearly killed the guy lol

Yep, my dad always told me a story in NYC where a bum asked for money. My dad proceeded to ask him what for and the guy said food. My dad said, "Hold on, I'll be right back." He came back 10 minutes later with a bunch of Mickey D's and the bum goes, "What the **** am I gonna do with this?"

I think most use it on drugs and alcohol (also a drug)...I too think there are definitely pro bums. I remember reading an article a decade or so ago about people who did it in a certain area of NYC. It wasn't by Wall Street or anything either. I wanna say it was on the water...anyway, I think they made upward of $500 a day or something. Crazy.

Good luck, GF. I'm not sure what you hope to gain but to put your money where your mouth is is admirable and the experience could be amazing. Life-altering even.

On a tangential note, I thought recently about what good could come from all the money people donate to churches each year. How much of that is wasted on ********? Paying pastors, other "employees" of the church, money for upgrades to the building. What a freakin' waste. If we, just in the U.S. alone, took all that money, and put it to use, 100% use, I wonder how great our country could be.

I was downtown and trashed one night and had just left a Dennys and had a pint of southern comfort in my pocket and gave it to a bum.
Never seen anyone happier in all my days.

More than anything, be safe out there.
Yeah, I've got a few specific concerns, mostly related to possibly stepping in on someone else's panhandling turf. But also the possibility that we might come off as mocking the situation of the people we're seeking to understand.

Other than that I'm looking forward to the nostalgia of walking from my childhood home to the epicenter of Utah's homeless epidemic. Growing up we'd play tag or whatever and sometimes stumble onto someones homeless camp. There was evidence that a shed in my backyard had served as a shelter for someone. Another time a freind and I were walking home from a neighborhood dollar theater and saw some homeless guys carrying bags of aluminum cans. When we got to my friends house about a block away all his aluminum cans were gone.

For anyone local please check my address on google maps and see how close I was to the road home and Pioneer park. 255 S Glendale st (1145 W) 84104 SLC UT. I lived there through elementary school, from 1979 to 1990, just as gangs were becoming a big thing in the area.

The place you grew up is a ****ing **** hole now.

It was a **** hole then. I think the street I grew up on looks much cleaner. Those houses are well over 100 years old.

When I used to travel on business, I would always get a to-go box at any restaurant, and the first person who asked me for spare change on my way back to the hotel got a nice meal. #perdiemlife

Depending what drugs they are taking they probably won't be able to eat. I have **** all sympathy for them, I realise the situation in the US is significantly different to here, I work with the homeless almost every night and I know the amount of services and support available to them and for a lot of them that still isn't enough. Food, medication, crisis accommodation, social workers, case workers, community mental health teams, charitable organisations that offer 24 outreach services all for free.

Still not enough cause most of these places have rules, you can't for example be an arsehole, treat others like ****, most have curfews and zero tolerance policies toward violence. So they end up putting pressure on emergency services and end up at my goddamn work dealing with me. In my experience you will regret your kindnesses.

Exactly the reason I don't give to people, but to an organization that I think does a good job of helping the problem.

I really don't see the purpose of this?
I'm really curious to hear about it.
I think a lot of people are curious to know how much money people make panhandling and what its like. How a panhandler gets treated by the public. How dangerous is it. Is he going to have dudes smoking crack right next to him? Will be find that most of them are using the money for food and clothing and stuff or are they buying booze and drugs.

My wife is very interested in this experiment as well. I'm glad that gf is doing this. It's something I have kind of always wanted to do.

Bitch, I challenged you and fish to go to Southern X-posure with me when I was out there and you both declined.
I don't recall this. I must have had a decent reason to turn down boobs and booze doe. Maybe we should have planned it a little better.

I bet I declined due to being broke and knowing I would spend too much lol.

Set your sights low.

I remember being in Oslo last year and having some gypsy bother me for money when i was having a really bad day, I turned around and shouted at her to **** off. The look of shock on the faces of the Norwegians around me was hilarious.

Yes, I read that. I don't understand the purpose of it.

The other person believes that I have a misconception of who panhandles and why. Believes this will enlighten me. I believe she will be terrified to be walking through the neighborhood I grew up in.

My dad's just the giving type and gets enjoyment by helping people out, me on the other hand think of panhandlers as scum and have no problem admitting it and telling them to **** off if they ask me for anything.

Wait, is the person who challenged you going with you? If so, I missed that.
