What's new

Australia offers to help USA with gun law reform.

AK47, AR15, whats the difference. You get the point. ( Paddock had one AK-47 in his room BTW)

Point guard, Center, what's the difference? That both play basketball and shoot the ball.

The point is that we should try to be educated rather than rely on common rhetoric.

People say "assault rifle" without knowing what it actually means, and everybody instantly thinks of an AK because of the movies. It's just silly.

This. Just because a gun looks like a "military" gun does not mean it functions that way. The mechanics of a true military weapon and a civilian version are drastically different.

For a basketball analogy, it's the difference between Javale McGee and Rudy Gobert.

You could also take that logic to say, if the vast majority won't use it to kill, then why get rid of it.

Logic says if you won't use it to kill, then it is useless in defending your family anyway. Why even bother having it?

For those who died and their relatives technical details does not really matter. What matters that those were guns powerful enough to kill number of people in short time and they were bought legally. Until USA fixes the stupidest gun laws in the world it will continue to happen.

It's not that they won't use it, it's that they most likely won't have to. If I had to use it, I would to defend my family. Realistically, I'll never have the misfortune of needing to.

I have yet to see some of the pro gun posters here admitting that USA have a huge gun problem compared to the rest of the world and to offer anything to fix it. Sending prayers to families is useless. Rinse, forget, repeat until next time. How can you not see that countries with strict gun laws are doing better than you is mind boggling. Life without guns is awesome, just look around!!!!
When somebody beat you in Olympic basketball ( 2004) you tried to fix it, got your best players to play, adjusted to international ball and got back to the top... but here we are - USA being absolutely the worst country in the world in gun related crimes, deaths and children accidents and you guys are perfectly happy with it and even arguing that it is all good. Just sick.

So you agreeing that 99.9% of those people do not really need a gun.

You did not answer my question though... if you would be left with a right to have a handgun instead of semi-automatic weapon would you feel less safe? Would your rights as American be badly violated if government will ban sales of all high potential guns and will implement stricter rules of who can access guns for self defence and hunting in general? Or let me ask you this way - do you consider living in USA impossible without a right of having more potential gun than simple handgun?

Aren't the vast majority of murders committed with handguns? Probably most suicides too. Not sure of what my point is, but I feel the focus on assault rifles clouds the issue.

If the people making the laws know as little as you, I'd be very worried.

Most handguns are semi-autos btw.

:)

Point is - when Australia banned assault rifles they did not have a single mass shooting since. So why not USA do something to show that you guys care. Ban assault rifles as a first step and buy out existing ones. Give it 20 years like in Australia and see if that made any positive impact. Maybe it will, maybe it won't. But until you do something more than just sending prayers the rest of the world will view you as paranoid gun loving idiots.

Yes. I already said I am comfortable with the risk to reward trade off. The chances of an incident are so small that I don't bother myself with this politically charged busy body worrisome attitude. In fact, I think people who get worked up over infinitesimal chance events have a psychological problem. It's no different than the sheltering helicopter parents who are creating harmful growth environments for their children and society by being overly worried about kids doing what the sole purpose of life is - to grow up and get to a point where you can fend for yourself.
Good point/post

So why even have a gun? Or by defending your family you will be shooting in the air to scare the attacker?
Guns have other uses than home defense

I'm from New Zealand fyi. Made my first visit to the USA a month ago. Las Vegas of all places.

I was directing my post to Americans, sorry. Did not know you are a kiwi. How is it in NZ? Did you feel a need for a gun for self defense ever?

lol, I don't even feel the need for a pea shooter over here. I'm from a small farm town, so some people have hunting rifles and shotguns, but you'd never really know it unless it's duck shooting season.

I am seriously considering NZ as a retirement place.

You are deviating to technicalities again instead of focusing on the subject. Answer the question.

The technicalities are important. To looo over them is foolish.

The idea that all a person uses a gun for is self defense is ignorant. That you can't or won't realize that makes this a difficult conversation to have.
