Exum will sign qualifying offer and subsequently leave

I'm confused though. He is a guy that has the speed to get anywhere on the court. It is illogical to suggest he can't create his own shot. If he can get by his defender, he can always get a shot - just sometimes not the shots he wants. I think it is as you point out, more about attitude and confidence of making the shots and not pissing off Hayward and coach etc. And yes, DM's handle is far better at this stage than Xs was in his rookie year - prob still better than his now.
As a guy who has a lot of faith in X and think he's going to be just fine. You almost make me not like him. You continue to ignore the team dynamic and the differences in the personalities of the 2 players. Yes Mitchell is inefficient, So is X so far in his career. The differences are that Mitchell has a more aggressive personality and this team needs somebody to become a scorer. If Exum was healthy right now I'd expect him to be more aggressive as well and have more opportunity than ever before. Also if Exum was healthy it would have taken longer for Mitchell to start getting this much opportunity. The situations just are not the same. If Exum is offended by the opportunity that Mitchell is having then he should have been more aggressive earlier in his career and he should work his *** off to come back and show his ability when he does. Their is an spot on this team for a real offensive leader and so far Mitchell has show more promise in that regard.

Speed means nothing if you can't get the ball where you want to go with you. Exum's handle has never been great and secure... especially against pressure and in traffic. The splitting of double teams that Mitchell does on multiple occasions every game are something Exum was never able to do. You can probably count the Exum's double team splits on the fingers of one hand for the duration of his whole career with the Jazz...

Exum has never fared well with pressure and double teams

Not even all the speed in the world can help u if u struggle with dribbling a basketball.

Most of the time Exum isn't doubled teamed though right? The help defender keeps an eye on the penetration and it is single coverage.

Splitting double teams is hardly the only way to deal with amped up pressure.

this is spot on, absolutely. He's going to be good, and when he gets back he's going to play plenty. I'm sure he's more than happy for Mitchell the way his rookie season is panning out.

Dude, don't let my perspective or fandom impact your views etc.
I don't ignore the team dynamic. The Jazz tanked their asses off to get Exum, yet unlike Burke, Burks, Kanter and Favors he was never given a proper run at being a key piece on the team. You don't tank for a point guard and then draw up your first play for him in his 4th pre-season.

Taking the ball out of his hands was useless and short sighted.

Regarding this aggressive BS - I don't buy it. Believing in your ability and jacking up shots doesn't make you a great character guy. Maybe this is a cross cultural difference. But in Australia, you don't grow up playing sports to be the MAN. You grow up to be an effective part of a team. Exum was forced to defer. If not always explicitly by Quin (which it was), then implicitly by being yanked whenever he made a mistake.

I recognize it is pretty much tank season again, but everyone here are such apologists for the FO and coach. I am not in that camp.

Have to disagree, Et tu.
Dante was given a lot of free reign by Quin his rookie season. He played in all 82 games, started 41 (after Quin concluded Burke was not the answer) and averaged 22 mins/per. Obviously, the avg was brought down by the 41 games he didn't start. He shot an abysmal 35%/31%. But the main concern was his lack of aggression. He was just so timid. When he did "penetrate," it usually consisted of driving into the paint and straight out the other side. Mitchell may have a problem finishing right now, but he's attacking the rim. And I think a lot of those MLA's will start to go in the more he plays.

Last year was more of the same for Dante. He averaged about 19 mins per and shot 43%/30%. Let's give him some leniency as coming back from a knee injury can't be easy. But the only indication we have that he might be a much better player is a few Utah summer league games. I'm not sure I'm ready to jump on the Exum hype train based on that set of criteria.

That said, I hope Exum DOES re-sign with the Jazz and becomes what we hoped he would. Because an Exum-Mitchell backcourt could be scary good. If that happens, Utah thanks Rubio for 2 years of service and let's him walk (or trades his expiring contract next year). To me, that's the best possible outcome.

.

I don't think Jazz tanked with Exum in mind at all. Jazz were unlucky to drop to 5 in lottery, otherwise they would be taking Parker, Embiid, Wiggins or Gordon.

Wiggins and Parker don't really help their teams win.
Embiid means no Gobert.

Exum may turn out to be the 'right' pick.

But I agree, they didn't tank to get Exum. They were looking for a higher pick.

It was a horrible "tank" by management. You either lose more by instructing the coaching staff (as GS did) to rest key players in the 4th, or you gut the roster and go "all-in" for a few years like Philadelphia. Jazz were unwilling to do either. Multiply that by the fact they wer "unlucky" by having top lottery picks in two very weak drafts (Exum and Kanter before that). But that is on the GM. He should know if an upcoming draft is expected to be very weak or very strong. Heck, there are quite a few "experts" in the draft thread who have pretty good takes on college players 1-2 years in advance.

This reminds me a bit of the poster named Dreamlander who used to post long ago on old Salt Lake tribune tribtalk. He was Turkish homer who would argue to death that Memo is better than Shaq or Hedo is better than Lebron. No common sense was going through, in his mind Memo and Hedo were the best NBA players and he sincerely believed it.

Memo would look pretty damn good next to Gobert.
