He's gotta be shooting a lower percentage on open shots than other guys being contested. It doesn't work very well when the strategy is "find the open man."
Rubio shoots progressively worse depending on the nearest defender. He doesnt shoot tightly contest 3s. He rarely shoots 3s with a defender 2-4 ft but shoots them at 40%, he shoots about once a game with a defender 4-6 ft at 31.4%. Then the majority of his shots 2.6 a game are wide open shots where the defender is 6+ ft away and he shoots those at 29.4%.
Those numbers are roughly the same for 2 point shots as well. He shoots 4.1 shots a game with no defender around at 34.2%.
Jazz lead the league in most wide open shots per team. Rubio is a reason for that. But the Jazz would still lead the league even if we had another PG who got a league average amount of wide open shots.
I dont know why but Rubio's shot is one of the most inconsistent. Sometimes he shoots and his shot looks okay, then other times he has a hitch, delay, awkward motion of something else really ugly. Not that he always makes it when he has good form but those seem close and give me hope he could be a decent shooter. But he shoots enough ugly shots that tell me he probably wont.

that means somebody on our team is always pretty much double teamed.
the fact that you can slack off rubio is brutal for any offense. Its like playing basketball with a hamstring injury.

Well, there is solution for that obviously, but what to do with Rubio's shot????
You move Rubio if it gets you something for that 3-5 year window(like a Mirotic-type player) but there's no rush unless it makes sense. He's probably not going to get much worse, if at all. With Dante coming back and game losses actually a good thing(unless we get Mirotic and end up close to playoffs), we can afford to wait and see what he does with our revamped lineup.

I think Rubio is going to stay. I think DL wants to give him one summer to try to fix the problems in his game and see if that can work. If Hood is traded I think they go into next year with Rubio and Exum and then if Exum shows he's ready they'll just let Rubio expire or trade him at that point. If Rubio somehow makes a leap then it will be more complicated. I guess if some crazy deal presents itself and Rubio is desired that would be the only way I see him being moved. I am 50% confident in this prediction.
No. You get a stretch 4 to play next to Gobert. One of the main problems with Rubio on our roster right now is Gobert/Favors/Rubio lineups where there is no spacing. Favors is the one who doesn't fit. Replace him with a stretch 4 and we're looking good. Rubio/DM/Jingles/stretch 4/Gobert
Rubio is not going to get us anything great in trade. And he's on a reasonable contract that isn't a problem. With the right pieces around him he'll be fine. And if it doesn't work out we can simply let him walk in summer 2019. He's not the main piece that needs to go. Hood and Favors are the ones that need to go. Before we either screw up our flexibility going forward by overpaying them, or get nothing for them by letting them walk when we could have gotten something.

We won't be going anywhere in the playoffs this year or next year if you didn't realize. Which is why I said if Rubio doesn't work out we can just let him walk in 2019 when we are set to have some cap room.
Yeah, I just dont see a PG being successful anymore that cant shoot the three. Your PG needs to be able to shoot off the pick and roll if players go under to have success. Your PG needs to be able to space the floor for bigs. You can get away with and/or be successful with 1 or 2 bigs on the court not shooting but not your PG. Maybe Rubio can take an off season and shoot every day and come back a passable shooter but at this point I am not sure of that.
Is there a good team in the NBA without a PG that can shoot the three? Who was the last good team in the NBA with a starting PG that cant hit a wide open 3?
If you want to build around Gobert and Mitchell, you can't actively undermine them with players like Favors and Rubio. What makes Mitchell special is his ability to get the basket and score. What makes Gobert useful on offense is his ability as a role man. You completely take that away when you put two non shooters on the floor with them. It's not rocket science.
