Re-sign `em all - A value-scenario

Man, how times have changed. From every free agent being able to command near max salaries over the last couple of seasons to almost none this year according to most reports. This recent development puts us in a spot that we could really capitalize on. We have three free agents this summer that all at one time were projected to make major money on their next contract: Favors, Hood and Exum. Now it looks like the market just is not there for them.

Instead of trading any of these three players, we should look to re-sign the bunch of them to long term deals. If we could get these three players for a combined $35 million next year - Favors $15, Hood $12, Exum $8, we would go into next season with a salary bill of $119 million assuming we get pick #16. The luxury tax is projected to be at $123 million. We would be below this and go into next season with 6 expiring contracts - Rubio, Burks, Thabo, Jerebko, Udoh and Neto - that has a combined salary of $41 million. If Favors continues playing well and Hood stays healthy, we would have good players on good deals combined with expiring contracts that will give us the opportunity to either use cap space next summer to recruit our final piece or make a big move.

Love it. Well laid out.

Love the thought, but even in a more conservative free agent spending spree, I think those #'s are low for each of those guys.

Are any of those numbers actually realistic though? I would guess that they all get more than that on the open market, possibly not Favors, but I think he gets at least 15. Hood probably about the same, and Exum... We'll have to see how he plays when he returns.

We could easily create more space below the luxury tax by not picking up the option on either Thabo, Jerebko or Udoh. As long as the new contracts are positive value as in that they are tradeable, it would be smart to do it IMO.

Do we ever contend for titles with no upgrades to this current lineup? Not likely. So this is not the way to go.

I agree, which is why I think Hood will ultimately be sacrificed. I thought for sure Favors was on his way out too, but it looks like the team might be building chemistry to the point of being able to overcome an imperfect fit.

The other thing is that Utah almost has to make a choice between Hood and Exum. There just aren't enough minutes to go around for everybody.

As for the OP, I've said all along that re-signing Hood and then looking for a trade next year may be a better idea than trading him now with his next contract in question. So I don't think OP's idea is a bad idea, but I do think Hood will be moved at some point next year if we do decide to re-sign him.

Point is that if you get them below their true value they become a great trade asset.

In a normal offseason where there is cap space I think we would agree the value for Favs - $18-$22Mil/yr
Hood - $17-$20Mil/yr
Is fair and reasonable.

So get each at $5Mil/yr less would be a great asset.

I think you missed a major point of my post. If we have Favors, Hood and Exum on good long term contracts together with all our own future picks and $40+ million in expiring contracts next year, we would be one hell of a trade partner for teams with good players who wants out. We would also have the opportunity to go into next season with a lot of cap space and thus have the flexibility that would give us every opportunity to find our third star.

Hood may get more than that but Favs won’t get 15M... may not even get 10. Which team will sign him? The trade market for bigs is low because there is no demand.... but Favs is somehow getting 15M in a market where like 5 teams have that kind of space?

The numbers are sound imo 35M for all of them but I’m not sure on the strategy.

I really think Favors is going to go to Dallas. They have money and desperately need a center. They seem like a team who would like him.

It's a great idea and something that should be considered if and when the Jazz end up not trading one or all of their FAs and having one or all of them walk because they were signed to deals that exceeded the Jazz threshold.

There is a scenario where they all fly under the open-cap teams radar.

EDIT: If anything, putting our FAs on "the block" helps our FO evaluate their value to some of the teams that may be in the running to sign them

If we keep Favors, Hood and Exum at those prices we will be near the tax or a little over it next year. And we'll have about 80 mill in guaranteed contracts for 19-20. With Rubio a free agent. And we'll be needing to give Donovan AND Rudy HUGE paydays in 2021.

You completely missed the point of the post you literally quoted.

No. I didn't. I understand his point. I'm just looking at it from a different point of view.
If Hood, Exum and Favors all get major injuries and/or completely suck, sure we`d be in a tough spot. If just one of them gets/stay healthy and play well, we would be good both on the court and financially. Staying under the LT next season would be easy as we have 4 unguaranteed contracts in the summer.
