What's new

Andy Larsen killing it:

His article on the Spurs game with lots of interesting detail, but most specifically the breakdown (with graphics and video excerpts) of Quin's answer about what the Jazz could/did do in response to the Spur's defensive wrinkles that had caused them troubles throughout the game until the end:

I think one of the more underrated aspects of the win streak and last 2 months has been Quinns adjustements at the half. Hes been brilliant.

You guys are really nice, and your kind words mean a lot. Thanks.

IMO Zach Lowe is the best sportswriter in America right now (okay, Lee Jenkins and a whole bunch of others deserve shoutouts), so being mentioned anywhere near his name is a compliment.

BTW, I ran into Zach in Houston in December. We were talking about Donovan Mitchell because, seriously, that's all anyone wants to do when see a Jazz writer from out of town. Zach is very on board the Mitchell train, though couldn't believe he wasn't selected before #13. (Especially Detroit, he said. What were they thinking? As a capped-out team, they needed to take high-upside shots like Mitchell, not safe plays like Kennard. So it goes.)

I think one of the really cool things about this beat (which only a couple of other markets can compete with) is how good each of us are at our own things. Tony is incredible at developing relationships with players, coaches, agents, etc. He's a gregarious personality and one of my favorite people to be around. (He also definitely reads JazzFanz, though I'm not just complimenting him on the off chance he reads this). Kyle Goon is the best writer out of all of us. That man can write a game story and make it seem like it took 5 days, not 45 minutes. His features are great, too. Eric Woodyard has a really unique eye for a story: no one else would have driven the eight-hour round trip from Memphis to Meridian, MS to tell Rodney Hood's family story the day before the trade deadline on the fourth game of a 4-game road trip. And I hope I have the ability to look inside the game a little bit with stats, Xs and Os, and my relationships with Quin and the front office.

I suspect that my complete lack of good basketball playing experience disqualifies me from a serious NBA color spot, which are nearly exclusively filled by former players. I'd love to do pre or postgame one day, though, or fill in if possible. I also have a weird voice, as listeners of the SCH Show know.

Do you guys hate Locke and his spoon fed takes as much as we do?

Also, the thought of Andy and Tony reading this forum makes me cringe. Content aside the grammar and spelling has got to drive them nuts.

haha yeah although Tony makes some grammar mistakes too. Also, this is a message board so I guess no one really expects polished writing

Wondering what they think of some of the threads like "Ingles DL black eye" or some of the Lopo trade ideas (love you Lopo lol)

Some people make some garbage threads on here.

Yeah, Jazzfanz is my one stop shop for Jazz info. When people do post links to Andy's stuff I am impressed and think he's awesome. I wince when I see people treating him like a reg when he posts here. We should encourage pros like Andy to participate here, not chase them off with crass comments and inside jokes.

Glad to see Andy has thick skin. Hasn't always gotten tons of respect when he's come around here. I should read his material more often. I don't make much more time for anything other than checking here.

Ya it bothered me when people talked **** to him before.
I also don’t make time for anything besides JazzFanz when it comes to sports.

It should be pointed out to @andylarsen that his material was appreciated long before he joined the forum and not because of that. Dude is a rock solid writer, becoming a great analyst, and obviously dedicated in using tech to improve his columns. Box/Vermin/Verlin/Maneesh used to always make a point of speaking high praises of the guy.

So, there's your frank *** kissing since you kick *** and are going places.

My opinion on this is Zach Lowe caters to small market teams in his articles. Market size is not really an accurate screen shot of the dynamic IMO. NYC says 7.5 million viewers but everyone knows they and L.A. have way more fans watching than what the so-called market numbers. Lakers only have 5 million fans? Please.

Those markets are saturated with reporters. Lowe makes his living by combining all the neglected small market team fan bases that don't get his kind of coverage or analysis. Why enter a saturated media market with, say, 30 million viewers when you can add 30 million thirsty viewers from all the small market teams combined who will cling to your every word?

Jeff Van Gundy does this too. Why do you think he's getting paid by the LHM corporation to be on The Big Show and always praises QS, Gobert, etc. when he's one of the announcers when Utah is on national T.V.? It's a niche. Copy that and you will have places like Portland calling you and paying you for interviews or columns.

Well... I did join the forum a long time ago...

Thanks for stoping by and congrats for your great work

I was wondering. What are your main takeaways from using Jazzfanz? Do you get a sense of how the fan base is feeling in a more thoughtful or structured way (unlike twiter)? Have you stolen any of Lopo's trade ideas for your columns (lol)? Do you enjoy reading JazzAvenues threads (I think you mentioned other fans reactions to DM in your triple team after beating Phoenix)?

All of the above. I like reading everything, and while mostly it just gives me an idea of how the fanbase is feeling, you guys also have some unique ways of looking at certain topics (say, the Fav/Gobert pairing). So I use those. I use it a lot when prepping for SCH shows, to try to get an idea of what are the top 5 topics that Jazz fans care about right now. I've used JazzFanz trade ideas, though tbh, the ones I get from RealGM fans are generally much more even. I do read JazzAvenues' threads, though moni does a similar thing on her website JazzFanatical and it's somewhat better formatted. But JazzAvenues pulls from more sources, so I usually read both.

Thanks Andy, appreciate it. I forgot, do you know if Quin is aware of some of the comments other fan bases make of him? You know, that he looks like the guy from American Psycho or T-1000 from Terminator 2. Some comments are out of touch but others are hilarious. He probably hasn't heard any since he's extremely busy and focused on bball. How would you describe him in person? From outside he looks like someone incredibly focused, a smart person who can talk about anything, plus having a great sense of humor.

Maybe during the offseason you can show him some of the comments. Watch your back though. Get life insurance first.

Along those lines, I was recently thinking Quin is still a bit of a mystery to me. There were plenty of stories about his life leading up to the Jazz, I would like to know more about how he has changed and what drives him now. He is so reserved in his comments I don't feel like I know him.

I think old jazz fanz like me are accustomed to Frank Layden, Jerry Sloan and Rick Majerus. Big personalities and very quotable. Quin may not be that but I would like to know more about who he is.
