The SLTrib now has a pay wall...

RIP SLTrib

It was a good run.

I got in. First try.

Oh. I rarely read it so I wouldn't notice that. But that is different than a true "pay wall", tbh.

I read maybe 2-3 Trib articles a month so nothing really changes for me

Terrible idea. It’s not The NY Times or Wash Post.

I wonder if this is an attempt to favor the dnews and actually kill it off? At one pt a few years ago the dnews owned stock in the tribune and tried to kill it off then. I don’t know if anything changed since huntsman gained control...

But it seems like one terrible idea

Man I hope the Tribune doesn't go out of business. Would be awful if the only paper left was the conservative mormon one.

You know, 10 years ago I read the Trib much more than I read the Des News. But in the last 10 years the level of Mormon hatred that they tolerate in their comments sections has driven me away. Frankly, at this point I don't really care one way or another whether they fold. And that's a shame.

When I read the title:

I get that paying for news is probably fair, but I'm poor. This one hurts.

There are so many other sources of "free" news. Even though I have read the SLTrib online on a daily basis I don't see myself paying $8/month to continue doing so.

What model for fiscal self-sustainability would you have the newspaper do? I don't mean this as a shot at you or anything. This is the question I think all newspapers have.

I read this as you proposing the desire for newspapers shuttering one particular type of voice on their public comment section.

They certainly owe it to their readers to not make any group feel targeted and hated. Would they tolerate post after post of anti-gay material, for example? Not a chance.

Have you read KSLs comment section?

Hasn't the model always been to get paid by advertisers?

The SLTrib is not in a position to charge a fee. I just don't see how that's going to work. Especially not $8/month. If it was $2/month I might pay it.
