2019 Offseason & Free Agents

Also, I feel like Rudy isn't special and is vastly overrated here and hasn't shown any ability to recruit. In fact, I can't help but wonder if his attitude rubbed Hayward and Hill the wrong way. We know he already had an issue with Hill...
Who are the players in the league who have shown ability to recruit?

The Jazz just beat the 3rd best team in the NBA on the road cuz of Rudy's defensive ability and you say this smh.

Hill was a baby who sat out after his extension talks stalled. Gobert doesnt like babies.

I agree and disagree with you. Rudy is special, Donovan is super special, and the Jazz are a good organization. As far as recruiting, I think it’s overblown overall. Lebron hasn’t been able to bring too many people to Cleveland and he’s been the greatest player in the league for a long time and finals appearances just sort of come with him. Jazz aren’t going to get just any free agent for any reason. It will mostly come down to money, next winning, and then personnel. Even then it’s going to be certain free agents, not any.

I think Donovan is going to be a more infectious attraction than Rudy going forward but Rudy definetly helps. In recruiting for free agents it’s better to have guys like Rudy and Donovan than to not. A huge factor? Probably not. However, Donovan appears to be an amazing teammate, caring person, extremely competitive, and is not full of himself, a guy like him doesn’t hurt to have in getting people to play here and neither does a guy with the competitiveness and play of Rudy. He will help, but the Jazz need to do whatever it takes to improve within the next season or two and keep Donovan and Rudy bought in. As good as we were last season, Jazz are now on the clock for Rudy and really Donovan to a lesser extent at the moment.

I have a hunch that Lindsey is putting together a plan to go get Kawhi. DL has a track record for going after guys he knows. He doesn't always get them the first go-around (i.e. Hill, Crowder), but he definitely knows who he wants and he's persistent. I can't think of a better fit for our team. In 2019 (when Kawhi can opt out), Donovan will be in his 3rd yr, and Gobert will be approaching his prime. Kawhi checks off every box for Lindsey (long, athletic, tough, no drama, etc). Spurs are on the descent while we're on our way up. Makes sense why Lindsey refuses to make deals that would restrict our cap flexibility. Imagine adding the best perimeter defender in the game to the team that already has the best interior defender. Add on top of that a top 5 coach, an up-and-coming-star and solid role players who can both shoot and play defense... We'd be contenders for a good 3-4 years.

The Kawhi ship has sailed. But at least we have Burks.

I think it is a mistake to target 2019. There will be too many teams to compete against. Instead, they should target Aaron Gordon this year. He is a young player with upside that would fit well. Orlando may match, but you can likely get a feel for this before clearing the cap space. Alternatively, Orlando might be willing to do a sign-and-trade (not sure if you can do this for a RFA).

Let’s assume they agree to a sign-and-trade (he’s restricted to they lose no leverage), who of our people we can trade do you think they’d want that we could offer?

Mitchell
Gobert
Ingles
Burks
Crowder
Jonas
Thabo
Udoh
Bradley
O’Neale
Rubio

Err... Not that many. Udoh, Bradley, Burks, Thabo, Jonas. I don't think they'd like any package I would be prepared to give up.

We should try and re-sign favors for a good deal. If that's isn't happening we should target Jabari and Gordon with a solid offer. Their teams probably match but I have changed my mind and thinks it's worth trying for.

Could be but Orl is likely to match. What about Parker? They can only keep either Parker or Middleton.

Anyone has been following the Bucks lately? Haven't seen him play after his comeback

If Aaron Gordon demands a ton of money, I could see Orlando trying a sign-and-trade so they can recoup something for him. It would probably take our unprotected 2019 1st, Burks, Jerekbo, Udoh and probably another asset.

I don't think that will happen in a rfa situation. When was the last sign and trade deal for a rfa?

When was the last sign and trade at all in the NBA?

I can't think of any for a RFA. Either you match or don't. Or you pull a 'Crabble': match and toss a first rounder the following year to dump his ridiculous contract, and to the team who made the offer sheet in the first place ha. Dumb Blazers.

Last sign & trade? Chris Paul? (although it was more like an extend and trade). I think next year we could see a few more S&T as most teams will be capped out and it will be in both the players and teams' best interest to explore that avenue. I think Lowe even mentioned in one of his columns.
