2011 draft.....

Fredette does come in last here but it's not significant enough to disregard him as a decent gamble @ 12.

Why isn't it? Isn't a PG supposed to help others be better? What about his unbelievably bad defense (that's rhetorical, I don't need to hear the excuses again)? What do you do with this guy deep in the playoffs? You see how marginal Korver is forced to be because of his defense and he TRIES.

I honestly don't doubt Jimmer can score. I'm just not interested in 'decent gambles' at 12 who have no experience playing man D. I'd also add that Jimmer's numbers are a little inflated thanks to handling the ball 94 percent of the time like Turner last year, but that doesn't mean he's not very skilled.

To me, Jimmer is a 20 to 30 pick which I don't think is an insult. But that means I think he's a career backup as upside, and the downside is the 50% shot he completely busts like every guy drafted. When I draft at 12, I want to believe there is a real chance the guy can be a starter, and I'm willing to take a little extra risk for that.

Well, yeah - I heard all the talk about Fredette's ceiling being an NBA backup and at the same time all the Fredette lovers kept comparing him to Nash. So that's why I looked at their college stats and they're eerily similar. Which makes me wonder if Fredette might one day actually be a starter in league? I wonder if all the criticism came because he's a 4 year college player and them seniors never get any love, in spite of the accolades. I mean if he really is close to Nash or even Price I might feel pretty dumb passing on him just 'cause the talk was he would be just a backup.

Steve Nash was also a completely average PG for the 1st 4 years in the league, then he was pretty good for 4 years, then he finally became the Nash we know today.

Can someone explain Brandon Knight to me?

I realize that there is more to a player than his stats, but Knight's stats leave me wondering what that "more" is:

FG% .423
3PT% .377
AST 4.2
TO 3.2

I haven't seen him play, so enlighten me, please.

They're interesting stats though when you look at 'em next to each other, dontcha think? I mean even if you wanna disregard Nash's stats, Price's stats are equally similar. If Fredette turned out to be Price that would be pretty awesome. I'm just trying to look at something concrete rather than go with the groupthink. Seriously, this time of year players get labeled and then it's hard to shake it. So I'm trying to be objective.

He hit some clutch shots in the tourney, helping Kentucky to the final four in his freshman year. He's not a bad player.

Really young, got noticeably better as the season went. Has moxy already, led Kentucky to a Final Four appearance, even as a freshman (and despite not having a great individual performance in the tournament, made things happen when it mattered most). Great attitude and work ethic. Superb physical specimen for a PG with enough size (and judging by his bench press test, strength as well) to cover the 2 at times as well if it came down to it. Still very clearly learning the game but still quite good considering that at the same time.

The short version; His basement isn't that low, his ceiling is outer space.

That's why I brought up Carroll. There's probably a solid list of guys whose stats compare to Fredette, even in girth. But I'm old enough to remember Price who starred in the ACC when the best players in all of college basketball played in the ACC or Big East. No one doubted Price would translate. I'm sure I thought Nash was a fluke at the time. But Nash at least had all that Canadian National Team experience which exposed him to extremely talented players. Scouts would have seen him against NBA caliber guys. With Jimmer, you don't have that. You're guessing he can do it. I'm OK with guessing, but Jimmer is too much guessing at 12.

Fair enough I guess. He's a very polarizing figure though. And for good reason. On one hand, he plays a very candy, accessible game. He scores a lot of points, plays one-on-one, he makes a lot of stupid (and I mean that) shots that the book says he shouldn't shoot. It's fun. It's tempting. On the other hand, he's one of the worst defenders I've seen in my life and is a PG that doesn't help his teammates be better. On top of that, he's white so he doesn't get called out for chucking and that puts a chip on every white person's shoulder to defend criticisms of his athleticism. And he's Mormon.

Polarizing. I'm not immune to it.

Just awesome.

Billy this is one of those drafts when every player is a guessing game. Irving and his injuries/Body fat. Williams SF or PF? Kanter, Can he play against a person instead of a chair? The list goes on and on. I don't think you can up and say that any pick in this draft is a safe pick or in other words there is going to be a lot of "guessing" this year.
