The Morman hypothetical

Because the answer is easily that you love that child no differently than you have or treat them differently. That is not only what the church teaches but its common sense.

So you really believe that the church says parents should take NO additional action when one of their children comes out? Really? You REALLY think that's what the church says?

And seriously, it's difficult to take it as an honest question by Viny when he purposely misspells the name even when its been called to his attention. I'm sure he'll respond by saying that such a response is "emotional." I'll pre-empt that by calling him a hack and pointing out that his argument is "pretty vanilla."

Common sense? You would think right.

Edited to add: Not being a Morman, I don't have the privilege of accessing Morman literature or teachings...Can you point me in the right direction of a website that will give me better insight to the teachings on this subject.

Why do people think that one Mormon acting out of line of the church's principles automatically makes them represent all of the church. NEWS FLASH:....mormons make mistakes and do dumb things.

From our late Prophet Hinckley:

"People inquire about our position on those who consider themselves so-called gays and lesbians. My response is that we love them as sons and daughters of God. They may have certain inclinations which are powerful and which may be difficult to control. Most people have inclinations of one kind or another at various times. If they do not act upon these inclinations, then they can go forward as do all other members of the Church. If they violate the law of chastity and the moral standards of the Church, then they are subject to the discipline of the Church, just as others are"

This question goes to my Morman brothers and sisters here on the board...

One day, your child comes to you and says that he or she is gay. What do you do? Or, rather, how do you handle the situation?

Thanks!

EDIT: Someone already said this.

Anyways, what does everyone do besides mormons? What would you do Vinyl?

From our late Prophet Hinckley:

I'm interested to know why Hinckley used the term "so-called." Also, what is the "discipline of the church" he talks about when referencing members living their life in happiness by being gay.

What are you referring to Kicky?

The church pretty deeply endorses trying to counsel homosexuals into a) never engaging in sexual activity ever and/or b) "therapy" to "cure" them. This is clearly not the way you would treat a heterosexual child because you wouldn't be trying to tell them that their natural sexual inclinations were unclean and could NEVER be made legitimate or make it a goal to change their basic sexual urges.

I fully laud any Mormon parent who would truly accept their gay child, but to pretend that the church truly counsels not to treat them any different is simply a fabrication.

Don't forget "consider themselves." Those two tells are the real church position on homosexuals: they don't exist.

This is just an ignorant post from Vinyl who obviously has some sort of a beef with the LDS church and wants to knock on them by purposely misspelling Mormon. You know there's no way around that. Anyways, I think I good response to Vinyl's questions would simply be this. "As I have loved you, love one another." I would hope that anyone of any religion, creed, race of what ever would love their child no matter what, that's what I would do.

Does your "hope" figure into reality?

Edited to add: I mean, I hope what you hope bro. Happiness, love, respect, understand...they're all keys to living a long, healthy and fruitful life. That said, I could never be part of an organization that didn't believe in those things.

The same discipline as someone else who breaks the law of chastity. Bottom line is the Church views gay sex a sin. SHOCKER!!!!!......I am married and my body wants to have sex with half the girls at UVU, but if I did I would be punished.

Some Mormons consider themselves alcoholics and that's not a sin, but them acting on their temptation is. Its really not that hard to understand.

No. I have hope and yen there is no violence, no starvation, and no tragedies either, but it's inevitable and things like that still happen. What's your point?

Do you think we have control over the institutions we belong to or the teachings we listen to?

Are you considered a "so-called" heterosexual?

I dont find the term "so-called" offensive. The term gay use to mean happy. Hinckley was referring to what we know as modern words for gays and lesbians. If someone said I was a "so-called" Mormon I would not be offended.
