Jazz Pre-Draft Workouts

So by the time he gets to SLC he will know all the ins and outs of the workout procedure and will have an experience passing interviews saying right things. Cool.

Brooks is a player that I could warm to. But probably not at 12.

I will take him over Singleton though... He is a polished offensive player with the tools to be at least a decent defender. The NBA rules and the better offense prevent "shut down defender" from shutting people down.

Why the hell aren't the Jazz evaluating real talent? Two lotto picks that need to be can't miss and the Jazz are bringing in guys that shouldn't even get drafted. What the hell?

I always preferred Mary Ann, but as long as you pick either over Mrs Howell you'll be fine.

I agree Mary Ann was the way to go. But she wasn't part of the question so................... well you have to take what you can get. Unless your only choice is Mrs Howell then you just pass.

This.

Maybe the Jazz are planning on trading down or acquiring another pick....Jackson Emery?

Jackson Emery will not be drafted. However, he could be a non-drafted FA pickup for the Jazz. After watching this kid for 4 years, I definitely think he could play at the next level. He's a good spot-up shooter with 3-pt range and possibly the best wing-defender I've ever seen at the college level. Otherwise, he's very limited on the offensive end. It wouldn't surprise me if he found a place for himself in the NBA. The kid has rare shut-down D ability and shoots well enough to spread the floor.

I like Brooks, but I would still take Singleton first, unless we picked Williams with our 3 pick.
I'm starting to get the feeling Singleton wont be around @ 12 anyways so we won't have to worry about it.

About defense, a good defender can make a much bigger difference in a game than a good offensive player. There are enough offensive minded players out there that they can be found, but it's hard to find a good/great wing defender.

All of the good playoff teams can play defense. There are plenty of teams not playing right now that are good offensively, but not as good defensively.

Relax. Everyone knows the chance of these guys playing for the Jazz is next to nothing. But is one afternoon of workouts too much for John Stockton's son? It is always good to create some good will and help others out. We also don't know who these guys agents are. Maybe the jazz are doing a favor for the agents hoping to get a favor in return. Maybe the Jazz are hosting a few European scouts who helped the Jazz gather info on Jonas V, Jan V, Bismack, Monti or even Tomic.

I say we also take a look at Deandre Liggins (could possibly go undrafted). Best defender in the SEC, tenaciously nasty. 6-6" exteeeemely long.
He was drafted as a PG out of high school (5 star) and has the handles of a PG.
He's also a much better scorer than his numbers indicate. He was asked to be the lockdown defender ... much like Jimmer was asked to score .. but as he showed in the combine, he can shoot (was near the top on 3's).

I'd take a serious look at him if he goes undrafted.

Do favors and make friends when your drafting 30th not 3rd... When your in the bottom 3rd of the league and drafting in the lottery - do yourself a favor.

Where are lockdown defenders usually drafted? Right now Tony Allen is getting a lot of love for his lockdown defense. He was drafted 25th. Raja went undrafted - he used to be a great defender. I don't know if that's because he was an undrafted or if it's just 'cause he's old. Who else? ...Shane Battier - he's regarded as an elite defender, isn't he? He was drafted high with the 6th pick. Who else is regarded as an elite defender?

I'm just wondering where these elite defenders are typically drafted, and if they come into the league at an elite level or if they at some point in their career make a concerted effort at it. I'm just not sure about drafting a defender, if the guy has nothing else to his game.

Ronnie Brewer - I loved that kid - and we all knew his shot was crooked but he was supposed to be a great defender. And yet a lot of people came to feel his defense was overrated.

The nice thing with Singleton is he isn't coming into the league with a broken shot so that speaks well for his potential offense. He also has good measurements for a SF as well as a college rep for defense. I can see why people are in love with his potential.

But Kobe is a great on both sides of the ball. And the hope with Marshon is that his game can mirror Kobe's, even a little bit. Offensively Marshon has a lot of skills and he has a wingspan that should help him on the defensive side of the ball as well. I think I'd go with Brooks over Singleton. I could be wrong, but I'm not making the pick anyway.

Liggins wouldn't cost the 12th pick. If he goes on drafted that'd be awesome.
