What's new

Michelle Wolf and the Correspondents' Dinner

A few weeks ago we had a thread about comedians and a fair showing on the line that funny doesn't have to be crass. A lot of ordinary American and even Mexican folks residing in this country still have deep religious values. In fact, I think it is a definite trend that a majority of us folks are moving away from "crass", mostly just tired of the weary old filth. It's not new or daring or smart or even decent. Trends reverse themselves when they go too far. Hollywood, the mainstream Press, and the Establishment are getting that more and more. I think it is a huge vote swing going on.

We'll see, I suppose.
Crass is just something you feel and is arbitrary. I am guessing the reason you find it crass is because she used "swear words." Those are just a few words society decided were crass and again is completely arbitrary. I did not find this comedian crass and enjoyed it. She was very witty and had some great commentary, her set was well thought out.

Younger generations care less and less about these things like you do. I enjoy comedy shows in Utah 2-3X a month and I would strongly disagree with the trend you are claiming. Taboo subjects are becoming easier to talk about because again they are arbitrary and people are realizing that.

As far as the vote goes I am not sure why it would effect it. Even if it was very crass and very over the line and offended every sensitive person in the world it had nothing to do with these sides you like to stick to and draw a line in the sand. She simply got up and made as many jokes about everyone should could. She did seemingly take a stand against men raping and sexually assaulting women but I think we are all on the same side on that one I hope.

I haven't watched her presentation because I'm not a fan of crass humor and never have been (it isn't about swear words either). I know what makes me laugh and I don't waste time on that which doesn't. But to each their own. I'm glad we don't all find the exact same things funny or it would be a boring world. I do not think it is appropriate to tell someone their brand of humor is wrong (other than Big Lebowski fans ;)).

There is an ugly chasm between politics and journalism, and I suppose events like this do not help heal any wounds, but I doubt it makes it much worse either.

So comedians like Michelle Wolf, Seth Myers, Steve Colbert, John Oliver, and Trevor Noah speak truth to power. Some journalists apparently feel if you can't be nice speaking truth to power, follow their lead and don't speak it at all. Just let Sarah Huckabee Sanders stand at a podium every day and speak lies to you and the American people instead. Way to go, gutless journalists.

We have a President who spits out ugly tweets on an almost daily basis, and now the White House Correspondents Association thinks Wolf crossed a line? What a country, lol....

dunno that was a dull 19 min. i didn't think she was either particularly funny or clever. Being crass and dirty is cool if you're actually witty .. like billy connolly and her voice .. ugh

Gosh, a male who dislikes a females message, and uses her voice to attack her. How unoriginal.

I think you are a reading a LOT into that one statement OB. He did not even imply that "men" can be crass and "women" cannot, or even anything remotely that general. He specifically stated that this comedian being crass he did not find funny while citing another comedian that tends to be crass that he does find funny. Just because they happen to be of different genders does not immediately imply that gender has anything to do with the opinion. Maybe he has not heard many female comedians who tend to be crass as a point of comparison to this particular female comedian. He also did not attack her, he expressed an opinion that he did not like her voice. He did not say "she is a horrible person, listen to her voice". I don't particularly care for it either. I do not like my BIL's voice either, but I think he is a fine human being. To read misogyny into that comment is a pretty big stretch imo. You are making it sound like you are saying that you are not allowed to dislike a comedian's performance unless their gender is the same as your own, and that if you happen to dislike their performance it is purely because you are a misogynist.

You were pretty clear. Billy Connolly (male) can be crass and dirty, but not Michelle Wolf (female). Perhaps yuou could name a crass, dirtyu performance byu a female comedian you enjoyed?

It’s pretty pathetic that you’re so desperate to come to this conclusion from what I said and quite frankly just intellectually really lazy and it reflects far more on you than me.

I like someone like Billy because his humor is British, not because he has a pair of bollocks. Generally I find British humor more quirky, witty and appealing than American comedians. I guess that makes me a racist too eh ??
I have enjoyed many female comediennes, mostly Australians that you wouldn’t be familiar with, Magda Szubanski, Gina Riley, Wendy Harmer to name just a few. Not that I need to justify my preferences to a bag of wind such as yourself.

She is funny! She is smart! and she absolutely killed it.

I won't post the whole thing (infractions) and I don't want to post just the Trump part that they have on CNN. She was ruthless and dirty. I think it was the dirtiest set the WHCD has ever seen. She was amazing.

I'm a fan!

Look it up and watch the whole 19min version.

Almost saw her in NYC a month or so ago.

It reflects on the way most men think. Again, I didn't choose Billy Connolly and complain about Wolf's voice.

Yet, you didn't mention any of them as comedians who you enjoy then they are crass/dirty. For that, you reached directly for a man. Why not choose Magda, Gina, or Wendy?

Actually, I read very little into it. Misogyny is the normal state of men in a patriarchy.

He did not even imply that "men" can be crass and "women" cannot, or even anything remotely that general.

So, you are saying he is not constructing a logical argument? I agree.

Just because they happen to be of different genders does not immediately imply that gender has anything to do with the opinion.

I agree there is no logical argument to be constructed. He merely conformed to a common pattern of behavior.

Maybe he has not heard many female comedians who tend to be crass as a point of comparison to this particular female comedian.

Do you think that would support or refute my point?

He also did not attack her, he expressed an opinion that he did not like her voice. He did not say "she is a horrible person, listen to her voice".

I agree, he did not make that particular attack. However, if you don't think using their voices is common way to attack or dismiss the performances of women, you have been living a very privileged life indeed.

You are making it sound like you are saying that you are not allowed to dislike a comedian's performance unless their gender is the same as your own, and that if you happen to dislike their performance it is purely because you are a misogynist.

I am not surprised you interpret it this way.

the Washington dc press corps are the most offended, prissy people in the world. This happens every year. a comedian comes out and does some light roasting and they freak out for a solid week. Also conservatives have to stop calling college kids snowflakes if they are going to keep whining to this degree.

It is pretty creative that she used Trumps insults and language and turned it towards other people near him. Then had people come out and blast her as being crude for using Trumps language. I am sure she is laughing her *** off at people who didnt get it and are hypocritical.

I didnt love all of her jokes. She missed on a few and stumbled on some deliveries but overall did a good job.

I and oh 20 million others heard about this on about three conservative talk shows, and the conservative radio news panned it while making Trump out to be smart for campaigning in a new R state with a little Washington that represents America better than the Swamp.

Swampthings don't win swing voters who are just tired of the filth.

Dems have lost voters with this.

So democrats lost voters because a comedian used Trumps language? Dont you support Trump and his crudeness? Why didnt his crudeness lose votes?

I have such a hard time with your world view that is so black and white. You have a very strong us vs them idea. We obviously have discussed this before but I firmly believe most people are not "liberal" or "conservative." I believe people who firmly place themselves as one or the other or republican/democrat probably dont think enough for themselves and have definitely bought into too much propaganda. I did listen to Hannity today and he preached the same idea you did. He is a very entertaining person, I am shocked anyone buys what he is selling though.

because he's the most obvious person renowned for being crass that i find funny that people on this board may be familiar with. Simple as that. Must be exhausting constantly and deliberately trying to misrepresent and twist what people say. Enjoy, last time i bother replying to your tedious agenda.

Her Trump being not that rich take wasn't funny or clever. It was forced and awkward.
I loved it, particularly because Trump lies about his wealth and has done so for several decades. He may actually be a billionaire, but he claims to be worth something like 10 billion and he isn't, not even close.

Trump and Warren Buffett had just about the same amount of money in the late 70s, something like 100 million. Warren Buffett is worth around 85 billion today. Trump is worth around 3 billion. Had trump dumped his 100 million into a 401k in the late 70s he would be worth around 6 billion today, twice as much as he's worth.

Trump had a father who created his own wealth in real estate. His father set Trump up with his initial financing, mentored Trump, introduced Trump to the people Trump needed to know. This was the early 70s. Can you imagine being able to invest millions into NYC real estate in the mid 70s, guided by and financed by a self made real estate success? If Trump was smart he should have money like Warren Buffett. He doesn't. He has underperformed the market, substantially.

Trump is not a skilled deal maker. He is not a skilled real estate mogul. He is not particularly smart. He has not made his own success or wealth. He was placed in a no-lose situation and made the least out of it.

He knows it, too.

I'm pretty sure her shrill voice is part of her act. Kind of like Roseanne Barr.

She may sound like that somewhat in real life but I think she accentuates it on stage.
