Dat Prom Dress Doe

Basically, to me, this comes down to a few things. One being selfish, controlling and having a platform to bitch at people.

I promise to not be offended by any non-Americans who wear denim jeans.

In our PC culture, we seem to be having difficulty figuring out balance. I am certainly not against the concept of political correctness, because I believe it is important to try not to offend others when it is not necessary to do so. Empathy goes a long way. But we as a society certainly take a good idea and beat it to a pulp.

Why in the world do hundreds of people feel it is appropriate to attack a high school girl for what she is wearing? I love social media, but it definitely brings out the worst in some people.

I think it looks great. I could care less about people complaining about this type of garbage also

Looks like a Chinese dress to me. Looks fine.

Would there be any kind of backlash if a Chinese woman wore a dress by Calvin Klein, Valentino or Chanel? Or Jimmy Choo shoes? C'mon. A number of Asian women love Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Coach, and other western brands.

This is a non-issue.

I agree it should be the only goal, or even the primary goal in many situations. Sometimes, offending people is a/the goal for a good reason.

However, most of the time not offending people should at least be a consideration. That's how societies work.

From the link at the start of this thread:

"Fordham Law School Professor Susan Scafaldi, author of “Who Owns Culture?: Appropriation and Authenticity in American Law,” defines cultural appropriation as taking or using of elements, artifacts or knowledge of a certain culture without that culture’s permission."

This is one of the dumbest results to develop out of the political correctness mania. In one respect a distinct culture is a living thing. But it's not a conscious intelligent living being, where you can ask it if you can borrow one of its customs the way you can ask your neighbor if you can borrow his tools for a day. It's completely unrealistic to think cultural appropriation is something that can somehow be monitored and even policed through judgement via political correctness. It flies against what is the actual reality of history, which is cultural diffusion:

http://examples.yourdictionary.com/examples-of-cultural-diffusion.html

Cultural diffusion is the reality. Take the musical genre of jazz. It's a genre of music that was developed in America. Following the definition of cultural appropriation as offered above by the law professor, it should not be allowed for European audiences or European musicians to listen to or play jazz. It should be considered cultural appropriation and therefore forbidden. Which is ridiculous. The truth is with the advances in communication in the modern era of our planet's history, cultural diffusion is greater today then at any time in history. And there is nothing wrong with it. Another example, from a few years back, of how ridiculous the cultural appropriation movement has become is the canceling of yoga classes at a Canadian university because yoga belongs to Indian culture:

You cannot stop cultural diffusion. Whenever cultures interact, throughout history, and for thousands of years, the borrowing of one culture from another is the reality. Trying to arrest and stop this natural thing is just crazy.

I agree. The real issue comes from the difference between respectful and derisive integration, but not everyone sees that point, and different people can see the same act as respectful or derisive.
