The Emperor Has No Clothes

To be honest, I regret posting the quote from his letter. I was mostly being snarky because I was annoyed that the OP posted a lengthy speech with no context regarding who said it or why it was being posted, so I felt like being contrary.

I'm more than willing to acknowledge that bringing up something Byrd wrote 60 years ago is a cheap-shot, especially given the somewhat overwhelming evidence that he was a very different person at age 65 than he was at age 25.

Then only current thing I remember from this guy is using the n-word to describe certain white folk in an interview...I might be way the **** off, but I could swear thats the way it went down.

Funny story about Presidential term limits: Only one president has ever had more than two terms and virtually everyone agrees that it would have been a bad idea for him not to run the third time.
Ya, but FDR was like the Lebron James of government... pretty much everyone since has been a power hungry prick or a clueless idiot... not to say FDR wasn't power hungry...

It's been frustrating to me how for some people, a distinguished 50 year career has been boiled down to something the man did before he even thought about running for Congress.

He filibustered the Civil Rights Act of 1964. That would be well into his career as a politician. He also was against the Voters Rights Act of 65. His stance moved from federal mandated segregation to that of letting the states segregate as they saw fit. Very undemocratic of him but politically safe while maintaining his own beliefs.

His conversion to white knight for civil rights is not the immediate transformation his proponents would like us to believe.

Really? The things I read sometimes on this board, and that annoyed you? Actually, I didnt post the author because I half-hearted sought reaction without some preconceived view points concerning Byrd. Obviously that didnt work. As for context, I dont feel the speech needs context...I thought it could stand on its own in that regard. But I neglected to consider the results of trifling with the emotions of the masses.

So, it was easy to find. Wikipedia. He used the n-word in an interview in 2001. Duder, that pretty recent.

Posting a seven year old speech with no obvious relevance and no explanation; yes it felt like I was wasting my life.

As for context, I dont feel the speech needs context...I thought it could stand on its own in that regard.

Absent context, it's completely random. References to "this administration" that are about a past administration, arguments about a war that are, at this point, almost entirely irrelevant because they've been resolved, and essentially no potential possible future relevance.

Absent knowing who wrote the speech it's no different than someone starting a thread and simply posting the text of the Gettysburg Address or a random Ted Kennedy speech about gun control. Frankly, unless I'm reading a post written by "a," I like knowing why I'm bothering.

But I neglected to consider the results of trifling with the emotions of the masses.

Dude, the day that you're the elite and I'm the masses will NEVER come. All I need as evidence is that you still live in West Virginia.

Then why read it? Sounds like the epitome of "personal choice."

It was supposed to be completely random for the purposes of that post. Standing against the power hungry is always relevant, the details change as time passes, but it remains relevant nonetheless

The text of the Gettysburg Address? I wouldnt think one would need to post the author there either, but maybe thats just me. Granted Im not now, nor have I ever, compared that speech to the GA. But, it was a pretty popular speech in its time especially within the anti-war community. Again though, you ignored what I responded - that I didnt want personal biases to effect the impression some could get from simply reading the speech...biases be they good or bad. So, I didnt post the author.

LoL...nice. I suppose you've been to West Virginia? Otherwise I would have to assume you're simply applying a stereotype. I've been all over the east coast, other countries...and a few places in the western US. Seen enough to realize there's no place I'd rather be.

I'm the biggest ego on the board for a reason.

But seriously, anyone who talks about "trifling with the emotions of the masses" deserves to be put back in his proper place.

Actually, thats my bad... I made a grammatical error, masses shouldn't have had an "m" on it.

Do you want me to retract my regret for posting his racist quotes?

Well, thats totally your call. You either feel regret or don't. I would hope it doesnt hinge on the discussion with me, rather what your impression of the Senator is/was.

Byrd becomes the first person to lie in repose in the Senate since 1959. Even the late Edward Kennedy wasn't afforded this honor.

Since when did being a racist count as a "youthful indescretion"? Throwing a keggar when your parents are out of town is a "youthful indescretion". Hating black people is something that came from his heart. Hard to believe his "apologies" weren't spurnned on by mounting civil rights pressure and his desire to stay in office.

Why do we immortalize the founding fathers in this country? Many of those guys OWNED black people! Even Abe Lincoln argued a case for a slave owner to get his slaves returned in his legal career.

People are products of their times. And even then their opinions can change.

I guess it could be argued that despite their short comings they did do some amazing and great things in their lifves that forever changed the course of history and improved the lives of hundreds of millions of people.

I'd say you could make that argument for a guy who was a Senator for half a century or whatever, although I'm no big fan of Byrd by any means.
