Raptors Blog Author jay Satur : Working out Kanter in the windy city

Leading up to this year's 2011 NBA Draft on June 23rd, Enes Kanter remains one of its most mysterious prospects. A dominant performance in the 2010 Nike Hoops Summit generated a ton of buzz, but that proved to be his last major in-game competition for quite some time after the big man was declared ineligible to play for the University of Kentucky by the NCAA.

That's kept Kanter out of competitive basketball for over a year, but that seems to have done little to affect his draft stock. He had a strong showing at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago and rather than travel to various cities to work out for clubs, Kanter has remained in the Windy City and brought team reps to him at ATTACK Athletics.

On Friday, it was the Jazz (owners of the third overall pick) getting a private workout with Kanter and today, it was the Raptors' turn.

"We went out last night, we had a nice face-to-face meeting," said Raptors senior director of scouting Jim Kelly via telephone after the workout. "We met the staff, we met him, met the people that are going to be working with him. I thought that went excellent. We had a great discussion last night and followed it up with a workout today."

Obviously the Raptors' brass would have preferred to see Kanter in more of a game-type simulation ("In a perfect world we always like to see them go five-on-five for a 40-minute game," Kelly said), but if there's anything to be gleaned from Monday's session, it's that Kanter used his time away from competitive basketball wisely. He was reportedly on the floor for 75 minutes along with Raptors assistant coach Scott Roth and Kelly was highly complimentary of Kanter’s strength and conditioning.

With reports of a great motor, excellent touch around the rim and impressive range with his face-up game, Kanter could easily be viewed by the Raptors as the best player available if he's on the board at five. But the natural follow-up question is can he also address a need for this team and play centre?

Kelly said that Kanter is "probably as strong as any five in the draft right now," but was not ready to project him as a centre at the NBA level just yet.

"I wish I could tell you I have enough of a handle and experience watching him play enough [to say] exactly where that I can put him in on the floor there," he said. "I think we have the hope that he can play the five, but we really haven't seen him in enough games on this level where you can actually be really 100 per cent sure."

Like many other top-ranked prospects, the Raptors' have been keeping tabs on Kanter for several years. But Monday's workout kicks off a critical stretch of final evaluations for a draft class that boasts plenty of intriguing talent, but is also dotted with just as many question marks.

Tuesday will see the first of four scheduled workouts at ACC with highly touted guards Brandon Knight and Kemba Walker expected to attend; with reports suggesting that upwards of eight other prospects may also be present at ACC.

If I was KOC I would be terrified to draft this goucho. There are 2 or so tapes of him playing in an actual game? What? The Raptors guy even admits he doesn't know enough about him to even say what position he plays.

DX is working on an edit of his year of High School ball he played now, so we be able to see his most recent work besides the infamous Hoop Summit.

Kanter will get a GM fired.

If he is great it will be one of the GMs that passes on him, or he sucks it will be the GM that drafts him in the top 6.

No wonder KOC has worked him out twice already and possibly will have him into SLC before June 23.

Awesome thought.

It seems pretty unprecedented for a player to be rated this high with almost no tape of the guy playing a 5 v 5 game. Are there similar examples in past drafts? If there are, they probably don't have a very good track record.

That IS a good thought.
Knight seems to be a safer pick - and IF there is doubt about Kanter's ability to play the 5, why draft him? Favors is a much better prospect, IMO, and has fewer questions. He's already played 1 year in the NBA and shown a tremendous amount of upside.

Honestly, I'll be happy with either pick. I thought Harris + Favors for Dwill was a fair trade. That we get two lottery picks and one will be either Kanter or Knight (unless KOC throws us a major curveball); that's icing on the cake. I'm more interested in the pick at #12. That will be a fun one...so many possibilities, just like with the #9 last year.

I think one of the best things about Kanter and Favors is the fact they both can play center and PF. I have no doubts Kanter can play center. How many great centers are there in the NBA? The other things is the track record of Turkish players. Overall I think they have done pretty well in the NBA. Most of them have been second rounders but they have contributed to their teams. None of them are great but Kanter is the first to be picked in the top 3. Besides Kanter has been considered one of the best international players in his age good so there isn't a lot of film but most people have had him on their radar for years. Kanter is just not known to most American fans.

Every guy in this draft has some weakness. Take it one step farther, every player in every draft has issues. Even the great ones improve their game once they get to the NBA. The important thing is to draft BPA but also to pick a player that wants to get better.

I think any work stoppage this coming season will set Kanter back. Being away from a live game for a year takes away a guy's timing. Being away from live games for a year +, takes it away even more. Knight won't be set back nearly as much as Kantor would be.

Just draft a Euro then. Work stoppage, they keep playing.

I wouldn't be concerned with Knight concerning the work stoppage though. He wouldn't be on the fast track to starting with the Jazz anyway. Sit and learn behind Harris. I just think Kanter needs the reps asap.

I know he is inexperience but the kid was on Toronto's radar for years so someone must have thought he was a NBA-caliber player.
