Jazz Free Agency Summer of 2018

I found the loophole. Holy cow. I found it. Check this out:

"A renounced player no longer counts toward team salary, so teams use renouncement to gain additional cap room. Teams are still permitted to re-sign renounced players, but only with cap room or an exception other than the Bird exception1."

So, we renounce Thabo (logical), Udoh (see below) and Jerekbo (stings). Renounce Favors. Then re-sign Exum to a deal making $8. With Neto, we still have $10 million in space.

Make a big deal (Porter), take an expiring salary dump for an asset (Bayless), sign a good free agent for all $10 million since almost nobody has more than $8.6, do something crazy with Burks and $10 million. Whatever.

THEN, sign Favors using the full MLE. Give him all $8.6. Give him more than 1 year if we want because we were able to keep him so cheap. And if we want to bring back Thabo, Jerekbo or Udoh, we use the BiAnnual Exception (BAE).

Curious... what would the offer have to be for us to give him a multi year deal in your opinion? I've said one year or nah... but if it was 3/30 or 3/36 and he's healthy? that will be an asset.

My worry has been 2 of 3 years he struggled health wise... No reason to think he won't stay healthy, but that is my worry with any multi year contract we offer.
No idea. The problem is not with Favors... the problem is with Quin. He has shown unwillingness to play Gobert and Favors together, especially in the crunch and especially in the playoffs. If I knew he would play them together I would give him 3/36... but I have no confidence that he will, so... I would probably avoid it.

I think it is unlikely. I think we will give him $8-12M per year on a multi year deal... at least 2 years... maybe 4. He'd have to kill it to make big money next year and risks injury killing all that. He's lost 2 of his 4 years so far... another injury and he gets the minimum. If he took QO I think its a sign he'd be out and I'm not sure why we invest the playing time and development energy on him.

When he came into those negotiations I think I'd bring up Rodney Hood's name 50 times... How quickly would DL signed a 4/40 last year if Hood would have accepted it? In Duncan's podcast he took the QO... sad.
Next year there is a TON of money... it will be almost like 2016 all over again. There will be about 16-18 teams with full max slot and about half of them will approach 2 max slots. Read somewhere that the teams are projected to have combined about double the free cap that they have this year. It's all about his risk tolerance but if he believes in his ability to play 20-25 minutes a game this coming season and show himself as a good rotational player he will make 10-12M next year easy, with upside for more IMO. And if like what happened in the Dunc'd on mock podcast we don't give him at least MLE I can see him taking his QO. Another consideration - he might want out of Utah and might take his QO to ensure that.

When Paul Millsap left the Jazz, he ended up signing a two-year deal with Atlanta, and I think it was $18 or $19M total for both years. Then he became an All Star in the EC.

Favors may be best off getting more exposure in the Eastern Conference and putting up his 18/9.

Holy ****. Naz Long took 9 threes per game for the Stars. 37.7%. @homeytennis is that a D league record?

Great try but (and I’ve mentioned this a few times) you don’t get to operate below the cap and then get the MLE... it is a cap exception... meaning it is an exception for teams over the cap. Operating below the cap means you no longer have the MLE... there is a room exception that is like 4-5M.

We won’t take a salary dump trade... if we do clear space (unlikely) we will do it for a player we want... not cap BS and draft assets.

I don't blame Quin. He wants shooting on the floor so he usually elects to go with a shooting 4 in crunch time. Also, a lot of teams play so small now day's, especially in crunch time that it makes it hard to have two centers on the floor at the same time.

Gortat traded for Rivers... Deandre Jordan must be gone... either via trade or opt out. OK maybe not but Doc traded his son... and the Wizards decide to alleviate their locker room issues by getting Austin Rivers... super smart... everyone loves that kid.
WAS now has no center. They might go for Nerlens for example... or one of those:

Otto Porter for Boogie SnT?

Otto Porter for Favors SnT +stuff ?

Otto Porter for DeAndre Jordan SnT? Or Opt in and trade...

Best option of all of those for them is to sign Nerlens. If they trade Porter Jr and then Oubre has a big season its robbing peter to pay paul

It was reported that only one player, Brad Beal, reached out to the Wizards new rookie Troy Brown...

Wall reportedly wanted a bigman...

New Orleans isnt going to sign and trade Boogie. He either stays, goes to Dallas or goes to the Lakers.

A Favors sign and trade for Porter could be interesting, but I dont see Washington doing it. Seems complicated.

The Clippers would have traded Jordan and Rivers for Porter and Gortat if the Wiz wanted Jordan. Dont see why they rush to only Rivers for Gortat if that was the fallback plan.

If the Wiz want Noel, lol okay.

I wonder if Utah will be looking at Axel Toupane. He'll start workouts for NBA teams soon. Only 25. Strong athletic, 6'7" can dribble and shoot a bit. High level international and NBA experience.

Teams under the cap don't get a full MLE.

You don't know wtf you are talking about. Favors-Gobert were more than double the minutes in the next highest 5 man unit, and also the 4th (merely 76 minutes less) and the 6th.
