How you gonna do that? Once a player under contract becomes an All Star you've gotta trade him out?
Keep the tax, but have a hard cap above it. Also, allow teams to franchise tag players (one or two allowed at a time) - the player would get extra money but can't sign with another team. The franchise tag is good for only one player per year - once the tag is used a player can option out as soon as the tag is not used on them again.

I dunno if that's enough. Good players can always take less $$$ to play together in a big market and recoup the money they lost from sponsorship deals.
They should also eliminate max contracts and just open it up to the highest bidder.
That will really give smaller markets an equal footing.

LOL They installed max contracts to keep the Lakers, Knicks, Chicago, and Boston from buying championships ala the 80's. Max contracts are supposed to allow small market teams room to compete.
I don't know why everyone is so upset. It's only for one year and Golden State is favored to win next year anyway.
You need a combination of no Max contract and Hard Cap.
How you gonna buy a championship when all you can spend is $120m for example?

Sure. But try selling that to the player's union.
It would have to correspond with a significant salary cap increase. Still may be holdout-inducing but it has to be addressed.
Well it's either that or people are gonna stop watching if it's a foregone conclusion as to who will win it all year in year out.

And that is the problem, players union is also controlled by the stars who have their own interests in mind.
Yeah but aren't the likes of LeBron and Curry gonna be happier that the Max contract is abolished?
