Quinn Snyder Believes that Defense is the Great Equalizer

To beat a great offense we need great defense. The Jazz is trying to build a team that 10 players deep with high level defense. That's why we resigned D. Favors and didn't get a shooter.

Defense and no offense doesn't win many games. The playoffs show that you have to have a team that can turn on the afterburners on offense when the pressure is on, and if you don't have that capability your defense better be picture perfect and stifling to historic proportions to stop a team that can.

Put up 140 points and don't play much defense works

If your goal is just to make the playoffs but our over achievers unathletic players get out classed in round 2 like the last 2 yrs have shown. Jazz offense has to be able to make the other team play defense which just passing the ball and jacking 3 pters doesn't do.

Almost all championship teams in this league are top 7ish in terms of defensive and offensive efficiency, minus an occasional outlier:

Snyder isn't very off the mark in terms of countering high powered teams like Golden State and Houston. But we do need to be able to score in crunch time. Some of this will be addressed as Mitchell and Gobert's games grow, a healthy Ricky and Thabo (shooters, baby. shooters), and Allen as he potentially grows. Allen is a good prospect for us because he has the tools to succeed and once his shot is on (remember Ricky couldn't shoot for ****), it only helps. I think we need another shooter or two, or fixing what we have on the bench will resolve that. But we need to address Exum and Neto and their lack of a shot. A team full of 3D guys is great on paper, but the ball has to move and our guards hitting their open shot is critical. How good were we when Ricky found his stroke? Lethal, that's how good. But we need to fix some things. But it's a steady process and we'll get there.

I'm not opposed to it. Generally, great defensive players can be had cheaper than great offensive players. Jazz realize it's much harder to put together a team with insane offensive firepower.

When you look at the teams with the best defensive ratings of all-time you're going to see the Spurs, vintage Celtics and the Wallace/Billups Pistons.

Way to defend Exum and the team! You are really buying in, I like it.

If we can sign Exum for 4/32 I'd be really happy. The guy can defend and he's only going to get better. I'm likely one of the few JFers who still believe his offensive ceiling is high. If he can reach even 70% of his potential he'll be decent.

I'm with you. Dante still has a huge upside. His assists are going to go way up, because he plays smart and increasingly draws defenders. His FT attempts are going to go up because he's attacking more. As he gets stronger(which is already apparent) every part of his game will get better. Would be great if he could learn to shoot off the dribble.

I also get those who have given up. It's been so long. He has the potential, I'm not sure anymore if it will be realized. I do hope so though.

His FG% last season was great. I know it was done in under 20 games but he showed me a lot, especially in the playoffs. Thank goodness we can match if he signs somewhere else. What teams can even pay him around 10M per season? It's got to be a short list.

He doesn't play terrified anymore. I think it's because he's growing an NBA-body and isn't afraid of contact or whatever his issue was, plus he's not even at his physical prime yet. I'm not even banking on him shooting at 35% from three - as long as he keeps attacking the rim I'm happy. Heck, Kobe shot under 33% from three for his career but like Exum, he had that first step we always like to talk about.

I think this is the year we'll see Dante breakout. It's going to be challenging for Quin to keep him off the court.

I'm with you. I liked the attacking he did in the playoffs, if he can just stop letting the ball squirt out of his hands into the stands after a good move, that would be huge for me. He very well could be a mismatch. I do love his defense often.

That would be a great deal for us. I am also hoping for that.

We should be so fortunate to have that problem. It'd be a testament to how well this team is constructed to have the sort of depth where everyone needs playing time because they're just that good.
