What's new

Jazz Free Agency Summer of 2018

A few more FAs that still haven't been picked up:
- Jusuf Nurkic
- Marcus Smart
- Isaiah Thomas

Restricted guys -- Jabari, Lavine, Exum...

ala Joe Ingles.
Yes like Ingles, but I also think Ingles is more athletic than those two. Ingles has really good reaction time and quickness. He might not have a great very or the fastest sprint but he has some pretty high level physical tools that he uses well.

But he also is really smart and does what he is supposed to. He predicts a lot of moves.

Rfa's have been tricky for a couple years. Teams seem to avoid offering them anything lately. They get stuck in limbo when teams think they will get matched. But their own team and the player are off in how much they think they should be paid. like what happened with Mirotic.

Jimmy Butler in 2019
That would be an awesome pickup. Our salary is around 55 million next year so far. But we need to factor in Exum. Plus Rubio has a 20 million cap hold. So we would have to waive him or have extended him for a good deal by then. Plus we would have to waive a lot of players.

It's unlikely if we want to keep Rubio we will have enough to chase a max or near max player.

Realistically we won't have cap space next year .

Thats anticipation, bball IQ, not athleticism.

I'm curious why Phoenix went for Ariza on a one year deal instead of Smart... Boston ain't matching something decent there... He likely waits out the Indiana situation, but may be cheap for another year back in Boston.

Maybe why we drafted Allen?

Some of it is. Some of it is that he has really good hand speed. He picks peoples pockets all the time with quick hands. He has really good reaction time and initial quickness. He isnt explosive or fast though. There are lots and lots of different ways to be athletic and Ingles uses the ones he is good at very well.

Explain how there are "lots and lots of different ways" to be athletic.

You either are or you aren't.

Having a quick mind is one thing but it has nothing to do with athleticism.

You can be -

Strong
Jump really high
Have high top line speed
Have lower top line speed but change directions and speeds well (Harden is elite at slowing down and stopping... shows on his step backs and a lot of his drives)
Be extremely physically coordinated
Quick feet (lateral movement)

There are lots of traits with athleticism. there is also raw track meet athleticism and functional athleticism.

Being athletic is a general term and overall a meaningless one. You can define being athletic in lots of ways and a lot of people arent going to be good at all of them.

Its not a yes or no question if someone is athletic. It is a lot more nuanced than that. There are some ways that being athletic is more visible or noticeable in basketball because they are more useful than other ways of being athletic. You could be a very "athletic" in one sport and not another.

Does Jumping high make you athletic? Yes, but some people can jump high but are really slow sprinters or have a slow first step. Some people can jump high but it takes them awhile to get that high jump. Some people dont jump high but they jump really fast and can repeatedly jump fast which is also athletic, this is called rate of force development and some people are elite at it but cant jump that high. Some people have a quick first step but are slow after that. Some people have a slow first step but are really fast after that. Some people have fast reaction times and are cant jump high. Being strong is athletic but strong does not equate other athletic things always. I could give lots of other examples.

There are set tests that are a general predictor of ones athletic ability for a sport. But those dont mean you are a good or bad athlete. They are just broad predictors. There is no way to predict how you will use your bodies tools to be good at a sport. All humans have different strengths and weaknesses. You can be athletic in one way and unathletic in another way.

I dunno though he's got problems with everybody it seems... Wiggins and now KAT:

The problems he has with those guys is lack of hard work and defense. Our team is exactly the opposite of Minny.

But again we would probably have to trade for him if we wanted him. I dont see how we could sign him as a FA next year without really gutting our team.

I guess if Exum breaks out and we have him on a good contract going forward we could lose Rubio and Favors to make room for him. That also means we had a PF we felt good about or could get for MLE next year. Personally I think Rubio will get an extension with us around 18-20 million a year sometime this year.

Maybe we can trade for him at the trade deadline though. He will be a short rental so we might not have to give up too much for him.

You lost me at Rubio for $20m.
