What's new

Jazz Free Agency Summer of 2018

You lost me at Rubio for $20m.
You dont think he is worth the same as what we offered Hill 2 years ago? I would love to pay him less but that is the going rate for a solid NBA starter. Rubio played at an all-star level or really close the second half of the season and was the biggest impact player on the team during that time and in the OKC playoff game. If he is an all-star level player he will demand closer to 25 million next year.

Do dont think he will get a raise over his current contract?

$25m for Rubio? No thanks. He can find a new home IMO.

So if he improves over last year and makes the all-star team this year you will balk at 25 million? That is the scenario I have painted.

What do you think he is worth assuming he plays like he did in the second half of last year or better?

The problems he has with those guys is lack of hard work and defense. Our team is exactly the opposite of Minny.

But again we would probably have to trade for him if we wanted him. I dont see how we could sign him as a FA next year without really gutting our team.

I guess if Exum breaks out and we have him on a good contract going forward we could lose Rubio and Favors to make room for him. That also means we had a PF we felt good about or could get for MLE next year. Personally I think Rubio will get an extension with us around 18-20 million a year sometime this year.

Maybe we can trade for him at the trade deadline though. He will be a short rental so we might not have to give up too much for him.

An extension of Rubio is possible... but I need a good discount if we go that route. I don't know what his market value will be, but I can't see a team going crazy high on him. I don't think he gets more than 18-20 next year on the open market, so I need it to come down from that number if I'm the Jazz... so 15ish... I think the most we can do is 18ish.. 120% of current year salary.

A lot will hinge on his shot. If he continues where he left off last year and maintains it, the Jazz will earmark for the going rate and Ricky would probably go for that. He's happy, we're happy, the cap will be there. Just do it and be done. But if he's off again, we may need a more consistent solution. I doubt that would be the case, but we'll play it by ear.

I'm pretty sure Butler is looking for a new home. It's one thing to "be concerned" about one player. Two max-types on the team though? Yeah, ciao.

I like Butler, but I wouldn't roll out the kind of money needed to sign him next year... he's older and played for Thibs... gonna be a fast decline imo.

Him and Kyrie in the east sounds good to me.

I would love to see closer to 15 million. It really depends on how he plays though. 2 years in a row Rubio has shot really poorly the first half of the year and really well the second half. If he plays well the first half his value will go way up. It also depends on what we sign Exum for and how he plays.

Right... if it comes and goes he won't get 20M+... so if they are interested in an extension... gonna have to be a discount or I'll wait it out. I'm not 100% buying the shot yet... if we sorted out the stretch 4 of the future I could be sold on Rubio long term.

I think we are in the driver seat though... he likes it here. He won't get anything over $20M imo... saturated position and you have to use him intelligently... or he turns into Wolves Rubio.

Can you tell me how he makes the All Star team over Curry, Klay, Jimmy, Lillard, Westbrook, Harden, Paul?

What are the going rates for all-stars? 25-30 million?

What are the going rates for solid starters in the NBA? 15-20 million?

What are the going rates for 6th man players 10-15 million?

I think people are just off on their contract amounts and expectations. This year was also a really lean year. So a lot of players went for less than they should. There was a lot of 1 year deals for that reason.

If Ricky goes off for All-star level numbers and we sandbag him for 15m as our offer, he will walk and we will be screwed. The cap is estimated to be about 108m next year and we will have a tuckfon of money coming off the books. The going rate for an all-star PG will be at least 20m next year. I can see Ricky and the Jazz doing a bit of a discount for a longer contract, but if he's Slick Rick again all damn year, we cannot short change the man. Lowballing allegedly started the whole Hayward situation. I don't want to deal with that again. It's one thing if we're hurting for cap, but we aren't. As things stand, Ricky is probably a key piece to a contender in Utah because he was a complete PG after January last year. If he's that again, don't screw it up.

Right... I'm saying an extension this year would have to be at a discount... if he tears the league up for a year and is Rick Curry... then I could see him getting 20-25, but giving 18-20 now is risky... what if he blows up his knee again? We give long term security... but only at a good discount. If he is a 25-30M player then the cap hold of $22M is fine and we just work around it... offload Exum and Crowder to get the space we need to sign another guy.

You're dodging the question.
No that is the answer. It was a silly question with an obvious answer. If Rubio improves over what he was the second half of last year (15 and 5 on .400+ 3 point shooting) and the Jazz are a better seed heading into the all-star break he could be an all-star. Did you want more specifics?
