What's new

Jazz Free Agency Summer of 2018

I guess best case scenario is we get Exum on a good contract and he breaks out big time next season. That way we can let Rubio go and try and add another max player with our cap space. I'm just very reluctant to give Rubio huge money. He's been one of the worst shooters in NBA history throughout much of his career. He's shot the ball well post all-star break the past 2 seasons but he's yet to prove he can shoot well for an entire season. He also shot the ball really poorly in the playoffs at just 35% overall and 31% from 3. He's also had a few injuries throughout his career, that should be taken into consideration.
Exum breaking out would be great for us. I am not holding my breath but I think it is possible and hope for it. Assuming we re-sign him for multiple years.

The only way I would give Rubio a good extension in the realm of 20 million is if he plays and shoots like he did in the second half of the year and proves it wasnt a fluke again like the year before. We need him to be consistent.

Well whatever he does I'm not paying $25m for Rubio.. LOL ..
So if he improves a lot and is really good and we win a championship you wont pay him that much? ....LOL...

Sorry, I should know better than playing hypothetical situations with you, its a lot to handle.

I doubt money becomes a problem between Rubio and the organization. It wasn't with the Wolves, It won't be with the Don and Snyder. If he plays like he did in 2018, the Jazz will gladly offer him 4/<70 or something close and Rubio will sign it in a second.

If we win a championship? Wow. Another WILD speculation. To be expected though.

I really hope Rubio shoots well the first and second half of the year next year. I have no idea why 2 years in a row its been night and day between his awful first half shooting and good second half.

But I think our staff will improve him and help him find consistency.

Are you really that dense to not understand what a hypothetical is and a speculation are? You have to be playing dumb on purpose.

I am not speculating that. I just stated it is a hypothetical situation.

Ill just chalk this up to another bad day for ya buddy. First you claim I said he was going to be an all-star, when I did not, and now this... At least you gave me a laugh today. I really needed it, thanks OL.

Looking at the remaining free agents, can't help but notice Isiah Thomas is right there and you don't even hear a blip about him. Even MCW got a contract. Can you imagine if he only gets a minimum contract or a non-guaranteed? (or worse, out of the league). What a difference from last year and that infamous video about the Celts bringing a truck of money. Lol

When did you say 'Hypothetically speaking if...'

I'll wait.

You keep stating outrageous things and then backtracks with "It was a hypothetical".

Nice try hiding it though.

Keep back-peddling, it suits you.

I think he's been in SLC almost all summer... last year he was playing with national team... could be a big year if he's locked in the gym with our dev staff.

He will end up in Orlando and hopefully get some of his value back. The injury issues and physical limitations are really tough to commit to long term.

So if he improves over last year and makes the all-star team this year you will balk at 25 million? That is the scenario I have painted.

What do you think he is worth assuming he plays like he did in the second half of last year or better?

Also you did say "MAKES THE ALL-STAR TEAM".

*******.

Well first of all saying if something happens is what a hypothetical is. I have already shown where I posted that. Also this is the post you said I was making a speculation about winning a championship.

Do you not see what hypothetical is implied? I am really trying to hide that right? Or is that backpedaling when I said that in the post.

This is getting rough for you OL. But its 6 or 7 am in NZ right? Brain isnt up yet, NBD.

He mentioned it before about how he basically found peace here and he figured things about January'ish. I'm pretty sure he'll be fine. I don't see a lot wrong with his mechanics, but he was never really asked to be a shooter before and sometimes it takes people to adapt to a switch in roles before it clicks. Ricky wasn't an exception. He increased his 3p shots a bit post all-star break and hit them a helluva better clip. Even it's an extra shot per game, which was about it equated out to, if he's efficient, that's exactly what we need. The spacing between Mitchell, Ingles, and Ricky opened up everything for Favors and Gobert to get to work down low. This is why I'm also not so hot on Exum and Neto, but that's besides the point.

I think people are just off on their contract amounts and expectations. This year was also a really lean year. So a lot of players went for less than they should. There was a lot of 1 year deals for that reason.
IIRC, the cap is supposed to go up about $10 million next year. However, virtually every FA from this year signed on a one-year deal, which means they get to compete with that 2019 FA crop for that extra $10 million per team.

Sure, the top six or so stars are going to get theirs, but the remaining 90% of next year's FA are going to be fighting over scraps. Maybe PG and Labron were smart enough to see this coming, so that's why they signed 4-year deals.

If

That is an important part of that sentence. You cant just leave words out and make assumptions. Well you can. It just makes you look silly.

Yeah and we're all here saying he'll NEVER DO THAT IN THE WEST.

What's the point of doing a hypothetical if it can never come true?

There also appears to be a lot more money going around next year though as well. I think Rubio might have some pretty high value if the Jazz play very well like a lot of us expect. His impact was huge on this team in the second half. I think our winning streak had just as much to do with him improving as it did with Gobert coming back. Although it also had a lot to do with an easy schedule.

I think he will be worth a lot more than those second guys you have listed and possibly in the same conversation as the guys in your first list. Kyrie is really hard to predict though.

I think NY, Philly, Indiana, San Antonio will look at pgs, but will place a premium on shooting and not sure Rubio would be the first target... so I'm not sure he has a ton of suitors... even if he shows one year improvement. There are enough other stopgap options available next year if he did get too pricey. I don't know that we can get the Stretch 4 or dynamic 3 we want and have Rubio and Exum on the books... and if Rubio gets a 25-30 it gets to be rough to keep him. I'd likely let him walk at that point. We will have some options to replace what he does... hopefully Exum, Grayson can help give us some comfort there and we will see where Exum comes in with his contract.

Yeah, I think it will be big for him.

What I expect to see from him this year is improved passing as well. He had a lot of bad turnovers trying to make plays. I think he will learn our system better and improve his TO ratio.

His shot is still so ugly even when he was hitting. But when he is confident it seems much better. So I think he can get confident in his shot.

That's where I'd guess he comes in... so 4/60 now is a fair compromise on an extension if we do it this summer. I'd wait because I think he gets 4/70 and at most 4/80... I don't see him as a guy who will chase the limelight or every dollar... so if a dysfunctional team like NY called with 4/80 I think he'd be willing to stay for less with us.
