What's new

Jazz Free Agency Summer of 2018

OK, so I've been thinking:

- Jimmy Butler wants out of Minny

- Jimmy wants to play with Kyrie

- BOS has Kyrie

Why not BOS trade Hayward to the Celtics + a 1st round pick for Jimmy Butler?

Why BOS do it? They could win it all next year with Kyrie, Butler, Brown, Tatum, Horford. Their window is closing as Kyrie might not return next year.

Why MIN do it? They have a disgruntled Butler. They can swap him for Hayward who will happily play 3rd fiddle to Wiggins and Towns. MIN picks up a 1st rounder. MIN gets Hayward on a long term contract.

Win/Win/Win

AND it's a WIN for us as well with Hayward being stuck in the West back where he didn't want to be.

Rubio / Exum / Neto
Mitchell / O’Neale / Allen / Burks
Ingles / Crowder / Thabo
Favors / Jerebko
Gobert / Udoh / Bradley

I suppose that is 15. SOB. When I did this mentally I forgot Burks. Damn he and Bradley taking up valuable roster spots. Can we trade both of them for Carroll?

So according to my math, we are about 500k from the tax and at 15 spots. Jerebko, Royce, and Udoh are unguaranteed and we still have the MLE (8.6m), BAE (Biannual Exception - 3.38m), our TPEs (Johnson's 3.7m and Hood's 2.34m, both expire February next year I believe).

The Jazz can create three roster spots by cutting Udoh (3.36m), Jerebko (4.2m), and Royce (1.38m). Between those moves, it would put the Jazz about 9.44m away from the tax.

Realistically, the Jazz would be completely insane to cut Royce in any capacity. So this leaves Jerebko and Udo as possible men out. Cutting them gives the Jazz about 8.1m before they start to eat the tax I believe, which isn't the full MLE but good in this market. Another option is the Jazz say screw it, eat the tax, cut one of 'em, and use the MLE. The BAE or using a TPE is an option as well.

Bjellica, Lopez, Mbah a Mountme, Lavine, Parker, and Beasley are still available I believe. Decisions, decisions.

Actually I think maybe we should be hoping for the opposite. It might take releasing Jerebko and Udoh to be able to afford Bjelica and stay out of the tax. If DL thinks that Bradley is ready now, he would be more willing to release Udoh.

I hope so, it looks like he indeed needs some more time

Royce is untouchable.

The only guys, on the entire roster, who are expendable are Burks, Udoh and Jerekbo. Thats it. Any trade idea would have to be with them in mind.

The rest of the roster is set for 2 years. I think we should trade Burks and Jerekbo for Noah and New York's 2019 1st rounder. Then sign Niang to a Royce type deal. Let Udoh go.

The NY asset would be bait for a deadline deal or just to be used next summer since NY should be awful this year.

Why would Boston do it?

Butler essentially has one year left on his contract since the last year is a player option that he will certainly opt out of. So you’re going to trade Hayward, and a 1st, for the possibility of one year of Butler? You have to get an extension figured out first, but if they do that can they afford their young talent? Rozier, Brown, etc?

I just don’t think Butler is worth Hayward and a 1st. Butler and Hayward straight up could be fair, but you have to figure out a contract first.

López was good and then got hurt after we drafted him.

Agreed. I don't look back at drafts as "we could have had X player so Y GM sucks" if player X is injured. Injuries derail athletes all the time and can't really be predicted. So if a pick doesn't pan out due to injuries that aren't predictable, then I don't fault an organization for making that pick.

Except for Portland with Greg Oden. Benjamin Button was an awful pick. I go wing over big every time if its close.

In the game today, that's a good thing to do if the talent is equal. So weird to think how much has flipped in a few years when one of the most sacred rules of drafting gets turned on its head.

Yup... that's the BS part... that makes this hopeless. They get all the ring chasers on exceptions. Unique circumstances keep happening that continue to screw small markets.

I don't see a correlation with success and market size. Nets, Knicks, Lakers, Clippers.

OKC has one of smallest markets and they landed 2 top players. Spurs have been best-ish team over last 20ish years.

Maybe Steve Kerr has something to do with it. He's created a chill atmosphere, ala the zen master, and guys want to play for him. What coach(and what team) is better prepared to deal with Boogie? The only player I can see getting into it with him is Draymond.

Similar to Rodman and Phil Jackson, perhaps. But Rodman put in 100% effort on the court and he was weird. Whereas Boogie is a condescending dick to teammates. Which requires adult supervision.

I will keep playing the hypothetical game that all of us, including you play everyday on this sports message board. Its suits all of us pretty well. That is a huge chunk of what we do on here..

And playing at an all-star level is different from making an AS team. We can all agree that there were western conf guards who played at AS levels but did not make the team. And vice versa (Mo William and last 2 years of Kobe). Your hypothetical was a good one, it stretches our thinking into what may be possible, even if it may be improbable. Happens on this board every day.

Great deal for them I’m puzzled why philly did it... I mean it’s okay but 13M in cap space in this environment seems to be worth more than some distant seconds. Wilson is fine but they have a couple combo forwards already.

The 2nd are mostly irrelevant. They like Chandler's game, had space to sign him, and want to win.
