What's new

Dante Exum re-signed

Exum at 11m vs Payton at 2.7mil? You are thinking with your heart and not your brain.
I see hope for Exum to be a decent shooter. I don't see that with Payton. Frankly I'd rather have Neto than Payton for this team.

Payton shot 32% on 3 pt last year, Exum 27%... not sure where you see that hope.
Payton is older and has played a lot more than Dante. You bring up he's in his 4th year, but he's only really played 2. Also he had a shoulder injury, Kind of important to shooting might take time to get over that. Despite that his career 3pt % is better than Payton. Let that sink it HIS CAREER 3PT % IS BETTER THAN PAYTON. For somebody who bags on Dante's shooting that should send up a lot of red flags.

Despite the more experience for Payton, Dante has taken more 3pt attempts and still shot a better %.

So if during last season Payton shot 3 pointers at 5% better, that can only mean one thing - Payton improved his 3 pt shooting which was really bad first couple years in the league while Dante's shooting got worse from where it was before..... BTW Paytons shooting this year took a huge dive after he was traded to Suns... in Orlando before the trade he was shooting 3's at 37%...yet he finished season in Suns shooting at 20% in his last 19 games.... Not sure if there was any injuries but I suspect learning new teams offense and picking right spots for shots has something to do with it.
In any way you look at it Payton at 2.7mil is better value than Exum at 11 mil. Sorry but that is just simple math.

We aren't the Walmart of the NBA.
We don't need better value players. We did better players. Exum is better.

We’re the 26th smallest market and the 30th in terms of free agent perception. Yes, we need players for a bargain to stand any chance against the GSW of the world who are signing all stars for $5M deals.

Not based on stats. It is not even close.

Even TS % Payton has better by .003.

Advanced stats.

1 Dante Exum 2015 2018 162 3280 7.5 .496 .498 .157 2.2 7.9 5.1 16.6 1.1 0.7 19.1 16.1 -0.9 2.6 1.7 .025 -2.2 -0.9 -3.1 -0.9
2 Elfrid Payton 2015 2018 300 8854 15.3 .499 .123 .260 4.1 11.9 7.9 33.9 2.3 0.9 17.8 20.4 4.3

If you look at per 36 minutes it becomes sad. Payton is better at every major stat but turnovers. Way better rebounder, passer, scorer, more steals and blocks.

No, we aren't competing with Golden State by getting cheaper worse players that are a better value. Exum gives us a better chance at beating them.

Not based on stats.
Disagree. Exum put up better offensive and defensive ratings, more points per 100, better per, better ts%, and plenty of others. Then there are the more advanced stats but I don't want to dig through the tracking stats again but Exum did well in those. There are some stats Peyton has that are better but overall I like Exums. Plus he has a higher upside and is younger.

That's their career. Look at this year.
LOL, so when comparing this year 3 pt shooting I am told to look at career stats lol... when comparing their career advanced stats I am told to look at this season ( 14 games ) stats. Can we stop cherry picking to make Exum look better than he is? Andrea Bargnani once had 14 game stretch where his stats were better than Lebron... where is he now?

You sure dragging someone else's argument into this. I didn't say anything about his 3 point shooting.

I am looking at his most current play. His 3 point shot sucked post shoulder injury. I have reasons to believe it will improve and think he can be a decent open 3 point shooter but Peyton is currently better at that.

Even if we compare last season 14 games of Exum vs 63 games of Payton per 36 min - Payton had better FG%, better 3pt%, more ast, more reb, more steals. Exum beats him in FT%, blocks and pts with higher usage rate. Please explain to me how is this better. BTW Payton had two triple doubles after trade to SUNS... not that it is some super important stat but it shows how much more versatile player he is compared to Exum.

I just showed you where he was better. Yes, some of Peyton's stats are better.

It's fine if you think his play wasn't sustainable and a fluke but it was still very good play. I think its just the tip of what we will see, so does the Jazz. Hence why they paid him..

dude Peyton hasn't done anything in any kind of meaningful game. The Suns let him go lol A triple double for the Suns in the second half of last seasons means zero.

Exum's good play is a very small sample so far but he can clearly perform at a waaaay higher level than this floppy haired goofy mofo. His salary is an overpay initially but won't be for long. Don't forget the Jazz have had no qualms about moving on from those they think won't / can't cut it. Clearly they see a very good player in the future.

I havent read through this whole thread, but overall I like this deal. Is it a bit much? Yeah, I'd say so. But its not a huge overpay and let's remember, this kid is a defensive stopper. With all the elite guards in the league this dude is needed. Didnt he nullify Harden in the playoffs whenever he guarded him this year? That's huge

Exum had the worst dbpm on the team in the playoffs this year. Not only that, He had an ortg of 91 and a drtg of 112. Those are really bad numbers. I wouldn’t cite his playoff performance as evidence of his “eliteness”.
