No really, no. Just going by the numbers false accusations are incredibly rare. Vanishingly so when you consider how many of them go anywhere.

Hell, when it comes to rape, like 1% result in a conviction of the rapist due to low reporting and other factors.

False accusations aren't even on my radar of things to be concerned about.

According to Wikipedia (so you know it is true :) ) there are a lot of studies on false accusations. The number based on the studies are all over, from 1.5% (that study said 1.5% minimum to 10%) up to 90% (an outlier from 1981 which seems absurd). Based on the most recent studies, 5 to 6% seems pretty conservative and 10% would not be unreasonable. Those numbers are pretty high. The problem is some studies only list those that were proven false, where there are probably a lot more false accusations that can't be proven either way.

Studies also show that the number of actual sexual assaults/rapes that occur are only reported about 1/3 of the time. So a lot of scumbags are getting away with rape, without even being accused.

That said, 5-10% is not insignificant, and obviously every incident reported needs to be explored.

I am not sure if you are saying that 1% of falsely accused are convicted, or if 1% of rapists get convicted. The former seems high and the latter seems low. But with regard to falsely accused people, the conviction is not the only damage. If 5-10% of rape accusations are false, a lot of lives are getting ruined. I'm not sure how you fix it, because I don't want any additional barrier where a rape victim risks legal repercussions if they can't prove their claim (as we see from the Ford accusation, she'll be labeled by it forever too). At the same time, if it is convincingly clear that someone made a false accusation, they should likely be charged (and rarely are). Not a simple thing.

So is it inconceivable that a politically motivated person would make up a rape? It is possible. Do I think Ford make up her story? Probably not.

I thought the same person was going to grill Kavanaugh for them. Like they said we're handing responsibility for this whole thing over to a person who prosecutes sexual assault and she's going to question both sides. But to unleash her only on the accuser? Lame as ****!
She took I think the first two or three GOP Senator's time, and was actually asking him pertinent questions. They quickly realized their mistake though and she said not a peep the rest of the way.

Anyone see the pic of the accuser passed out drunk and naked on a picnic table from these days?

Or hear how she evidently went around bragging how she banged 64 guys back then?

I realize neither should necessarily skew one’s opinion on the case. But if that information is true (I have no idea if it is), I am skeptical here.

Yeah that was really weird. It's like they changed the format half way through as he struggled to answer her questions. Definitely not the same treatment Ford got.

Seems the person who would be of great interest is the one who drove her home, certainly if it was as traumatic as shes making it out to be she'd be distraught and crying uncontrollably or in a state of shock.. Conveniently she can't remember who this person might be, nor has anyone stepped forward. Another fact that stinks to high heaven.

This is ridiculous right here.

If I was at a high school party were people gossip naturally, someone jetting from the party in a state of shock would be quite a story. Didn't she claim it was the talk of the school over the next week yet there is not ONE SINGLE PERSON who remembers that?

She probably would have hidden it ya jackwagon.

It shouldn't skew one's opinion of the case but it skews your opinion of the case? Huh, wut?

Um.. how exactly can you tell if someone's in a state of shock?

My friends wife was abused by her father as a child, but she apparently completely put it out of her mind to the point she forgot it ever happened, had a great relationship with him as far as I could see and my friend went into marriage counseling, and I guess something triggered her memories of her dad abusing her, it caused her to have a complete breakdown and had to be hospitalized and everything, so I am not shocked there are details that she can’t remember.

Same thing happened to my wife, except it wasn't marriage counseling and she didn't require hospitalization.

I certainly can understand why he is angry and upset, and he is certainly entitled to his emotions. None of us know exactly how we would respond under those same circumstances.

It is very likely he doesn't have a recollection of this event and believes he is being unfairly accused. But ranting about Democrats and the Clintons seems unwise.

Oh he remembers. Guaranteed. He's just indignant. I mean how could this happen to HIM?

Dude, he's being accused of gang rape on national tv in a highly politicized and disingenuous attack from people who don't want him to be confirmed.

The attack may be disingenuous, but hey, the prep school ******* shouldn't have assaulted women.

I’m acknowledging it perhaps should not but it does for me. Is there actual evidence against this guy? I admittedly am not following it closely.

All crimes have a number of false accusations and mistaken identities, but no other crime receives the same level of skepticism as sex crimes against women. Even if the number is as high as 10% (highly doubtful), that still means 90% of the sex crimes are valid (and are still a tiny percentage of the amount of crimes committed). But for some reason people are willing to overlook that 90+% because of the slight possibility of a false accusation, and the presumption of innocence is typically toward the man. Why are people only concerned with the lives of men being destroyed when a vast majority of the lives destroyed are the victims?

And why don't we have the same type of horror about other types of crime, when our prisons and jails contain people who have been falsely imprisoned? Should we not investigate any burglaries because of the possibility that the homeowner sold or destroyed his stuff to defraud his insurance company? All homeowners are likely to be liars if a few of them are, right?

False accusations by women make my blood boil, and I would have no problem with charges being filed against those who use their personal vendettas in this way. But that would open a can of worms in this climate of "believe the man at all costs."

A friend of mine on FB just posted this:

"The complete and utter destruction the Republican leadership has inflicted upon our democracy was on full and painful display today. After watching that patriarchal, misogynistic, elitist, privileged display of entitlement, I am left with more dread, despair and fear than I had on November 9th. And I’m f*$&ing PISSED that they have so thoroughly corrupted the highest court in our land.

Enjoy your “victory” dudes. The end of your reign is near."

This isn't a climate of "believe a man at all costs." Real criminal accusations are held to a standard of requiring evidence, including time, place, forensic evidence and witness testimony (if available). Ford's accusations don't meet that standard.

If this political climate has taught me anything, it is that making predictions about what will happen is a fool's errand. I will not be surprised if either party comes out on top in the mid-term elections. How people respond to any of this is impossible to predict. I suspect that the majority of my family will be delighted with how well Kavanaugh responded to that "skank," but I could be completely surprised.

And this isn't a court of law and character testimony counts.

Well, the vote could go either way. It becomes a question of her veracity vs. his, with both having political motives.

I will be surprised if he is not nominated. Many people care more about abortion than sexual assault. He said, she said typically goes to the guy. She will likely have upset her life for nothing, but she can hold her head high. She represented well.

No one would question an eye witness of a theft like they do this. If a store owner said they saw a specific person steal from their store most people would just believe them. Even if no other evidence besides the eye witness existed. Even though both carry the same likelihood of a false accusation.

It's also baffling that people are living in this fear of false accusations. They are more worried about that than sexual assault despite the fact it is far far far far far far more likely a women gets sexually assaulted than a man to get falsely accused. Don't sexually assaulted or harass people and you have nothing to worry about.
