Utah Jazz Pre-Season Games Official Thread

Overall
Good
Ball movement
Defense
Teamwork
Mix and match players in and out smoothly

Bad
Free throws
Not a lot else

Grayson Allen
Cool, calm, focused
Gets his three point shot off fast, even off a dribble
Threes were great
Hustle defense, on the floor
Good rebounds
It will be very hard to keep him off the court. His play demands playing time

Tony Bradley
Lot of points, huge number of rebounds
Got in late, but looked very solid

Alec Burks
Threes were dropping
When he is in the offense looks different. He goes towards the basket when outside the arc. Our other gaurds pass along the arc. Not sure if good or bad, but no one else really runs it like Burks

Jae Crowder
I was surprised that I didn’t like his game more
Had a good amount of minutes, didn’t do a lot with them

Dante Exum
Did some Dante things. Fast drive, off his knee.
Defense strong. It seems he can recover almost every time
Nice block
Lot of assists. Kept the offense moving

Derrick Favors
Not a lot of time tonight
Didn’t do a whole lot
Not much happened when he was on court

Rudy Gobert
First 10 minutes was ludicrous. He had all the points and all the rebounds
Caught some very high balls and put them in
Free throws were horrific. Particularly the airball that grazed the bottom of the net

Isaac Haas
This guy is big, slow, and kind of confused where he should be
Joe Ingles
Injured, didn’t play
Jarius Lyles
No comments
Donovan Mitchell
Two great plays. A block from behind coming from nowhere
A drive to the left, going past his man, flipping it in over his left shoulder with hs back to the basket. Great finish
Not a huge amount of playing time.
Sat on the floor with the end of the bench after he went out. Classy move

Raul Neto
Injured, didn’t play
Georges Niang
Pretty effective
Not super fast or athletic, but he seems to be in the right place at the right time

Royce O’Neale
4 steals
Didn’t shoot much
Hustled on defense

Ricky Rubio
Didn’t shoot great
Shoots better on one foot with the slow step back
Not a huge amount of minutes

Thabo Sefolosha
Solid play, not flashy
Had a lot of minutes, not a lot of highlights

Ekpe Udoh
Scored a lot on follow ups
Solid defense

Alec Burks and Grayson Allen look like they could cut in to Royce O'Neal's minutes. They just have too much offense and effectively space the floor.

Grayson shot 9 3s. I didn't think of him as a volume shooter, but clearly he could be.

Quin's offense loves moving the ball and taking 3s. If Allen can shoot 5 3s a game, he's going to get significant minutes. He's also got one of the quickest releases on the team. He looked like our backup 2 tonight.

Definitely a plus with Grayson, and this was apparent at Duke too. Not scared to shoot, not shy. I'm sure there are parts of his game that will be slow to translate but shooting a huge volume of threes at a respectable percentage likely not one of them.

This was really a must win game. Lose either of these against Australian teams and Joe and Dante may go into a funk and never come out of it. Joe, especially. How could he trash talk to anyone in the league. All they'd have to reply back would be..."you lost to an NBL team...seriously?"

JK, of course. Thanks to all those who provided analysis. Great to hear Rudy is beasting on offense and Allen is en fuego. Grayson for ROY? Or will Simmons get it again?

I think the biggest takeaway from last night's game (albeit in Joe's absence) was Q showing his willingness to play guards at the 1 - 3. This is precisely how Burks and Allen will get more minutes -- as many have predicted.

Alec looked better though.

The interesting question is if Burks/Allen take minutes from Royce/Dante.

Royce was good defensively last night, but he didn't really show anything offensively and I think Quin pulled him after he took a step back midrange jumper (that he airballed). I don't think Royce has to show anything offensively other than hitting open shots, but if he tries to do too much that might cost him minutes (same with Jae)

Could be, but Royce's value shows up against good players. Against scrubs he doesn't really standout because the Jazz's worst defender could probably lockdown their best player.

He’s not an overwhelming defender like Kawhi where he will murder scrubs and take the ball away from them if they think about dribbling but against the Hardens of the league he’s great to give them hell for 20-25 minutes.

I went on an extreme bender last night so im just first finding out about how the jazz did right now. Sounds like they looked great. Thanks for all the commentary.
Any highlight video for the game?
