Utah Jazz v Toronto Raptors Oct 2 2018 Preseason Game Thread

Just got back from the game.

Key points:
- Burks was by far the worst player on the floor (crazy passes, missed wide open shots, stupid turnovers, etc)
- Allen was the second but was still loads better than Burks
- Everyone was struggling shooting tbh minus Joe (who was up until the last 2 minutes of the second).
- The second quarter was hard to watch.
- Gobert looks great.
- The team looks great

I want to see Allen be more aggressive. Of course I just watched a few highlight videos, but most of the time he was just sitting outside the 3 pt line and then went sauntering back up the court as the shot bounced off the rim. I hoped to see him crashing the boards, pulling those athletic rebounds. Someone who saw the game, was he more into the plays than this, or was he kind of flat-footed for much of the game?

He had the ball in his hands a lot more in the first half than the second. He had a few drives to the basket in the first half that resulted in turnovers. Not exactly highlight reel material.

Burks was better than Favors and Allen, who were the two worst of the night.

Favors largely look disinterested most of the night (I think he was recovering from some illness) and Allen largely did nothing and was getting roasted on defense.

Burks didnt play great, but he got rebounds and made some nice reads making plays for others.

They originally listed favors as out with an illness. So it doesn't surprise me that he appeared disinterested.

Fair enough. And really we can't expect a ton from a mid first round draft pick in his rookie year. The odds of lightning striking twice are Slim. I'm just hoping we see him be aggressive and go after the game somewhat similarly to the way Mitchell did. Definitely don't expect him to have a season like Mitchell did, just hoping to see flashes that he might be somewhat a similar player. Maybe even with a better 3-point shot in his rookie year.

Is it just me or were there a ton of alley-oops in this game. The highlight reels were full of them. It made it look like we might have added a new play up the middle, or tweeked a slip screen play, that might result in more lobs to the big guys. This would make a lot of sense and help keeping our big guys on the floor make it so that we can negate somewhat the small ball systems.

For sure. He didn't look great tonight but that Toronto bench is no joke. He was the primary ball handler in the second unit during the first half which is a role he won't be playing when the games actually matter. I think his role this year will primarily be offball, but he's got the skills to be a playmaker in certain spots as well.

First half AB made some great passes should have had a couple more assists... ingles missed and Favs had a dunk.

Allen got smoked fairly easily. Was overly aggressive in first half.

Favs seemed disinterested... I’ll wait until regular season.

Ricky was pretty damn good tonight. Shot looked more smooth. Royce’s playmaking was phenomenal tonight.

Rudy looks ready too. Let’s just start real games now.

It's going to be really interesting to see how Quin handles the rotation once the real season starts. This team is just so freaking deep! Judging by the first two games, it looks like O'Neal will be mostly playing the backup 3, so that leaves Exum, Burks, and Allen to battle for the backup guard minutes. It's also going to be interesting to see how the backup 4 minutes are divided up between Crowder and Thabo.

I reckon dante and royce share the back up minutes at the 2. i still don't reckon AB is going to see that much floor time.

That's what I thought too but after these first two preseason games I'm beginning to think almost all of Royce's minutes are going to come from backing up Ingles at the 3, and the bulk of Exum's minutes will be at PG. I think either Burks or Allen will be in the rotation, I'm just not sure which one.

I reckon the season rotation ends up looking something like this;

Gobert\Favors
Favors\Crowder\Thabo
Jingles\Royce\Crowder\ maybe some Thabo
Donovan\Royce\Exum\Jingles
Rubio\Exum

My guess is that X gets consistent minutes at both guard spots. Burks and grayson fight for scraps.
I think crowder gets most of the backup minutes at the 4.
