Jazz exercise third year team option on Bradley

I'm still fine with the Bradley pick. When we made it, we didn't know Favors was going to stay healthy or even be here for more than one more year. It's also not his fault that our front office was able to find a guy like Udoh after the draft who fit our needs and lockerroom so well.

We are one injury away from Bradley playing meaningful minutes this year. Some 1st rounders never play meaningful minutes. Especially guys taken in the late 20's....

Bradley is a project. I like drafting projects late in the first. Maybe they bust. Probably they bust. But, there is upside to mine.

By my eye he just needed to get into better condition to be able to contribute. And he does look in better shape to me than when we drafted him. Maybe in another year he looks even better. I have a lot of faith in our training staff to build up a player's athletic profile. And I think he has plenty of skill and size to play in the league if he can just obtain the necessary athleticism.

Long story short: He could still turn out pretty good.

True, but every team has a player or two they pay less than $2 million to barely play. It just turns out that we are spending less than $2 million this year and next for a guy we hope can contribute to our long term future.

Why do we spend so much time talking about Bradley? Who cares? It's not like he's a Plumlee making $10+ or Dieng ($15+) or Zeller ($13+), etc.

For a lot of reasons I like picking guys that can get some minutes in their first year or two... they don’t even have to be that good but if they show some flashes they can end up increasing their trade value by a lot. Josh Hart is a good example... may be a career role player but would get you a lot in trade right now. He has at least held his value... a guy like Bradley has maybe second round value. Maybe like Cy the Jazz thought he could be an Aldridge type player. I always saw him as just a center and not one that does anything unique enough to justify the investment. If you don’t have a center then that is fine but at the time we had Rudy and Favs.

Some are also saying if Favs leaves then Bradley plays... I think we could get a vet at the minimum that would be better next year.

Most of these picks fail... I just wanted to try on a different type of prospect. There is still a chance we get a payoff of some type... but to invest a late first (and mid second) plus two years of development time (and the roster spot) to get a guy that is an adequate backup 5... well that seems like a long walk for a warm beer.

I'm not sure at all... I think if it was just a straight trade he'd get a mid first. Prospects like that either get too much or too little in trade (they rarely get moved).

He's the type though that say a Tobias Harris is available... combining him with the contract value gets you there imo.

First rounders are like new cars... once you drive em off the lot they lose their value... unless they show something (like Kuzma, Hart, OG etc.) then their trade value goes high enough I'm not sure acquirers want to pay the premium and some of it could be fool's gold.

Malcolm Brognon is a good example... after his rookie year his value was sky high... he plateau'd and now if moved they'd get a late first imo.

DL is the man and I think maybe they projected something that may not be there. He obviously had more info than we did. The disagreements I've had with his moves have always been on the fringe moves like this one.

And as much as I didn't like the pick he does somethings well and I think could be a decent rotation player. Straight line running he isn't fast, but he seems to move laterally well. Takes up space and is a decent finisher. It's weird nuanced stuff and tough to see if it makes him a good backup someday or close to starter level maybe. I just wish he could shoot to go with all that stuff.

And tbh Hart is a little overhyped cuz he's a Laker... it's just more like he's held his first round value and Bradley has not. OG is a better example... showed some great stuff, but by no means has put it all together and word was he could not be had in the Kawhi deal.

And I know OG wasn't available when we picked... just like those types of swings.

Why do you keep talking like they are wasting a ton investing in his development? It's not all that much really, or any at all. The g-league is filled up with other lesser players being developed. Is TB getting much additional? There are plenty contract spots to fill with marginal talent projects.

Didn't say it was a ton, but the roster spot is not immaterial... we have found guys by churning through those last spots.

It's the investment of the pick, plus a second rounder (could have taken Bolden or Hartenstein and stashed) plus the roster spot for two years on a non-contributor, plus the development time (which is not a huge deal... I don't think he's getting Johnny Bryant's time)... then compare it to the reward... he could be a good backup center (a cheap position to fill).

This isn't something that will kill us short or long term... it just won't give us a boost like a couple other directions might have.

It was slightly puzzling at the time and I haven't had a light bulb moment where I thought "ah I get it now".

I get your position, it's reasonable and a preference position you're taking. I agree fully about bigs too. I've been saying for years they are a dime a dozen, back before the league ran away from them like they have the plague. It's much more likely to find a wing breakout player who brings back more value in a trade IMO. There are always bigs too, but they're easy to get on the market. I'd trade down an early to mid-teens pick to gamble on 2 instead of one. Think Rondo, Monta, etc.
