The reason we shouldn't go big: We already have 3 "bigs" that are borderline all-stars, or will be.
then next year do whatever we can to get a star wing in the draft (Barnes)
You're smokin crack if you think we're getting Barnes with our pick next year.
I think our front line is more far more solid than the wings. I'd love to have AK back until our #12 can mature.
I don't think that's a good enough reason, IMO. We need to take BPA, and I believe this is Kanter (unless Williams is available). I'm not convinced Al is a player we should build around. We will evaluate him this year, and depending on how he fits in, we should decide whether he is someone who can be a building block or whether we should try to move him. Even if we decide we want him part of our future, we can still look to move Milsap or Kanter.
I agree with going big with the #3 pick. With the #12, I like Jimmer, Singleton, Brooks, and Burks. I think we have some good options at 12. I sure hope there is a season next year.
If not Barnes, then Rivers. If not Rivers, Gilchrest. Point is, next year's draft will be far more likely to get us a solid wing. We need to take BPA this year, and IMO that's not one of the Pg's at number 3. We have an opportunity to build possibly the best frontcourt in the NBA. Why not go for it?
Next year, we can use Big Al/Harris/Milsap as trade bait to make sure we get one of the solid wings coming out.
Don't think drafting Knight means building around a PG again. I think the Jazz are structured now to be building around their bigs: Favors for the long-term and Jefferson for the short-term.
The question is why we should or shouldn't go big at 3, not whether or not we should pick Kanter. BPA is a solid approach, I just don't believe Kanter is a better overall product than Knight, Williams, Irving, or any number of other possibilities. Yeah, he looks great, but in my opinion he might just be the next Greg Oden.
Right now it would appear either Kanter will land in Minnesota or here. If Minnesota takes him, we still have Jefferson, Favors, and Millsap for bigs, and likely some FA, even Fes (roll eyes) or Elson. Not sure there's another big worthy of #3.
Williams would likely be available if Kanter isn't, but I'm not sold he'd be a good fit in a Jazz uniform. Yeah, great athlete who probably is better suited at SF in the NBA, but is he a WILLING defender in a team concept? Or, how is he at running set plays with his teammates on offense? One-on-one, his much-published game, ain't the Jazz way of doin' things... I'm just unsure of his overall basketball IQ. Not sayin' it's poor; I'm just not sure 'bout him...
Would the Jazz really wait to the very last moment to work out Knight if he was high on their list? We have nothing to worry about.
I'm smoking crack yet you're the one wanting AK back. If not Barnes, then Rivers. If not Rivers, Gilchrest. Point is, next year's draft will be far more likely to get us a solid wing. And honestly, Oden is a terrible comparison. Oden was a great defender coming out of school, while Kanter has been compared to Boozer because of his supposed solid offensive game and weak defense.
nbadraft.net said:Weaknesses: One of the big concerns scouts have with Kanter is his physical health. He has had a history of knee problems and there are concerns about his knees not checking out 100% when he has NBA physicals …
We may not even have a pick next year. GS could sneak in as the 8th seed. Or, they could miss, but win one of the lottery picks. Jazz might be just good enough for the playoffs as well. And in that case, we lose our 1st-round pick.
