There always was question mark over that notion to anyone with half a brain. Not many people are battle trained shooters. Some random dude with a gun is usually going to just get himself killed when trying to stop a shooter, or worse and they will hit some innocent people accidentally.

Nothing would have stopped it short of the dude never being able to get a gun in the first place.

I'm starting it's just an excuse for gun owners to keep their guns.

Yes, people like you, DJ, need a gun to protect themselves. Hiding behind the law to sanction your hostility. In a good equable society where everyone contributed to each other's welfare and was considerate of it, we wouldn't need guns.
 
84 returned servicemen killed themselves last year which is more men than we lost in Iraq and Afghanistan more needs to be done for veterans and their mental health problems. We take healthy young men and women send them off to kill for their society and then discard them when they come home broken. Its a disgrace.



I'm glad this bastard didn't have access to firearms or yesterday would have been worse for everybody involved.

The victim's family has been offered a state funeral, this is how we roll in Melbourne. My cousin actually knew Sisto pretty well, its a shame.

Kinda go hand in hand i think. I said him not being able to buy a gun may have prevented this. You say dealing with mental health. We could easily say that people with mental health issues shouldnt be able to buy a gun.

Seems like a no brainer that more stringent background checks would be rushed through Congress. I bet the police officer's family and coworkers would support that. Republicans don't want to give an inch; they have more and more blood on their hands.

Whats a mental health problem? Where do you set the standard? Admission to a facility? What if its a voluntary admission? What about people who can pay for treatment privately? Does everybody who gets treated privately for a mental health problem have to be registered on a database? Will this not discourage people from seeking treatment? In a country with as many guns as the US do you think it would be that hard for someone with a mental health illness to buy one?

How can you have any faith in your country taking any sensible sense steps to sort out your gun problem?

Yeah, it's tricky. Yes, there should be a database... for criminals, people under restraining orders and those with documented mental health issues. It's not a perfect solution at all, and tough to implement, but it's a half-step in the right direction.

If it were up to me I would ban all handguns and assault weapons. Hunting weapons would be allowed, but purchasing one would require a background check. You want to shoot a handgun, get a pellet gun. At this point I think public safety should outweigh gun rights. Our fascination with guns is asinine.
