2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

Yep, but I addressed that in my post by saying the only reason they would do that is if they think the Lakers landing him was imminent (e.g trade deadline) and wanted to go all in on AD. The Celtics preference will be to wait until the offseason to pair him with Irving, and imo NOLA would be able to get a much better package from Boston even if Ainge managed to keep Tatum out of the deal and they could still potentially compete the year after with some combination of Holiday/Hayward/Randle/Horford/Mirotic/Moore/Brown/etc, or they could blow it up and find a 3rd team who wanted to take on some of those guys in exchange for assets and potentially move Holiday at the same time, or move him in a later deal.

If Mitchell was actually capable of playing PG then we would've seen plenty of it already with Rubio's struggles early and Exum's struggles most of the season, but we haven't because Mitchell can't run the point.

The Exum/Korver/Ingles/Crowder/Favors lineup was originally tried with Mitchell there in the first couple of games after acquiring Korver, but DM tunnel visioned too much for the lineup to really work, whereas it hums along much better with Exum since he's not looking to score every possession and it allows everyone else to get involved more, particular Ingles who gets to actually showcase his playmaking skills with that unit alot more, and it results in a lot of wide open 3s and wide open lanes for the Exum/Favors PnR to operate. OKC defended that lineup the best so far as they just stayed home on all of the shooters and let Exum try to beat them by walling off the Exum/Favors PnR, and that's where if Mitchell was a more willing passer then he could absolutely abuse that style of defense since he could take and make the shots Exum can't, but it doesn't work because with Mitchell there they just lock him down instead and he wasn't able to find the open man or keep the offense rolling in the half court and instead would force a lot of bad shots.

It's still imo the biggest thing preventing Mitchell from being an all star caliber player, even moreso than his inability to draw fouls. A Mitchell who can play point for stretches of a game like DWade can/could would unlock so many more lineups for this team but he's just not capable of doing it at this stage in his career, and I think it would dramatically improve his efficiency since he could pick and choose his spots better instead of forcing tough looks.
The Lakers getting him might be very imminent.

I mean James Jones isn't running the Pelicans so there's hope for the Celtics that they'll be patient and wait to get the best deal possible for him rather than just sending him to the Lakers for Ball/Ingram/Kuzma/a bag of potato chips, but this is the same GM that got veto'd by David Stern for a garbage CP3 trade to the Lakers so it could very well happen.

Maybe NOLA might think that if they blow it up now they could get Zion in the draft as well...

Sometimes I wonder... how much better would we be right now had Hill and Hayward both stayed...

Hill
DM
Hayward
Favors
Rudy

It still wouldn’t fix our PF situation but I think we’d be a lot stronger, and Ingles would be in the running for 6th man of the year...

That’s water under the bridge, as was drafting Trey Burke instead of Giannis...

Yes, but at some point you wait so long then Davis decides he only wants to go to LA, so you lose all leverage. Better to just get the deal done if you see the writing on the wall.

I don't think AD is the kind of player who only wants to go to LA to play, he just wants to win and have a winning legacy. Only reason why the narrative have shifted from Boston eventually moving in on him to LA getting him is because he fired his agent for LeBron's agent and LeBron is tampering/not tampering (depends who you ask) through the media. Boston is an iconic NBA franchise in a win now position with plenty of pieces to trade, I don't think AD shuts off the option of going to Boston and being in a much closer position to win as "the man" from a legacy standpoint just because LeBron wants him in LA to carry him through the regular season while LeBron gets all the acclaim and fame when the brightest lights are on.

If I'm the Lakers, I would trade anything and everything possible to get AD before the deadline. If I'm the Pelicans, I also look to trade him before the deadline because I think they can get more now than if they wait until the summer when AD says he wants to be traded (by either saying it or declining the super max extension).

NOLA can wait until the summer I guess, but Boston would have to send Tatum, Brown and numerous picks (all projected outside of the top 10) to get AD in order to beat the potential trade package of Kuzma, Lonzo, and Ingram for AD. I'm tired of hearing about it. And I don't want to see Hayward get to play with Kyrie and AD and own the East.

I'm somewhat in this boat... You can use Boston as pseudo-leverage by just saying you'll wait unless LA gives up the full treasure trove. LBJ only has so many years left so getting an AD/LBJ year in now has tremendous value.

I'd ask for Ingram/Wagner/3 firsts/ and let them choose between Hart and Kuzma (i think they'd retain Kuzma)... add in whatever else to match salary. Unless Boston tells NO they will put Tatum in the deal this summer that is as good as I think Boston could do. NO should fall to the bottom of the conference this year... making an #8 seed looks hard right now and won't prove anything to AD.

If NO did a huge tear down they could really set themselves up... the bigger issue is if AD goes I think basketball in NO goes too... I think the team ends up relocating. They have a top 5 player and can't get attendance or continued success.

Great. So in 20 years they can get another crack at a franchise and be bitching about how Anytown, USA, won't give them the name Pelicans back.

If NOLA could keep Holiday and get Wall, they could be really good. Not really sure how NOLA gets Wall with their other scraps though.

If the Wiz were smart they'd take Hill and expiring scraps for Wall and be super happy about it.

That's what I'd do, if I were the Wizards. I'd trade Ariza for a pick, I'd try to acquire someone like Niko and then trade him to the Jazz for a pick, I'd trade Beal for young assets/picks, then tank TF out of the next two years. Hire homey tennis to fill out the roster for the next two years and save the money you would have paid a GM to then buy second rounders from DL.

True. I just think Wall has value around the league despite his terrible contract.

I would rather have Holiday over Wall regardless of contract.

I think Wall the player is useful, but I wouldn't want any part of the contract and he's not the guy I'd want in the locker room.

Not sure I'd go that far, but it'd be great to see Jack Cooley in the league again.

NOLA has a lot of winnable games on the schedule next 10 or so... If they struggle in that 2 week stint then the AD noise picks up serious steam.

Here's a small beef I may have with AD. Last year in, I believe, the last game we played against them down in NO, Donovan went off in the second half and we ended up closing it out with still a few minutes left. AD left the bench and went to the locker room. Did not appear for any health or injury issue and I'm surprised it wasn't talked about. But that's some bush league garbage. It felt as if he was above the team and could bail when he wants. I've been picking up some of those vibes. IDGAF how good you are -- park your *** on the bench with your team -- you know, the guys who you win and lose with, whether you like it or not.
