We all love Favors, but...

I think Favors is worth keeping so long as he is happy in the role, plays hard and keeps improving.

This is a very good post.

Much of the July 1 sales pitch to Favors was his role in the offense and keeping him happy: https://www.nba.com/jazz/news/derrick-favors-free-agency-recap

"During that meeting, forward and front office had a “real conversation” about his role with the team.
“We put a lot of things on the table,” Favors said.
Last season, Favors saw a change in his role on offense, and that resulted in fewer points, touches and crunch-time minutes than he expected.
“There’s probably nobody that sacrificed his own personal game and stats more than Fav,” Lindsey said.
A key part of Favors’ July 1 discussion centered on how to get more involved in the offense next season—and he left the meeting satisfied with what he’d heard."

43 games into the season, Favors is playing 4.5 minutes less per game. He is also averaging less points, shot attempts and rebounds than last season. If you take away his injury plagued 2016-17 season, he is posting some of his worst numbers since he was 21 years old.

We all know Favors is a really good player and could do great things if given a starting spot somewhere. Maybe we send him to that type of situation before the deadline if that's something that makes him happy.

He's at a career high in WS/48 and BPM, and not far off that in PER. This is one of his best seasons as a player.

True, but how are his touches, usage, etc.? Is the team providing what we promised him in the summer?

His usage is down, particularly in the starting unit. That doesn't mean "he is posting some of his worst numbers since he was 21 years old", because he's posting pretty good numbers.

Of course some of his statistics and how he impacts the team are amazing, but are they the type numbers the front office said they would impact when they met with him last July? They promised him more touches, and that's not happening.

I was referring to the numbers as referred to in multiple articles.Even in this article, it said: "The forward averaged just 12.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game last season, but he looked rejuvenated after an injury-plagued campaign the season prior." Everything this season is down from those numbers.

Just an interesting fact I thought I would bring up. Unless Gobert gets hurt, I only see Favors getting less and less touches.

I think they’ll make a small deal at a quiet deadline (involving Thabo’

You have to take back salary at the deadline, which puts you out of the running for those targets anyways.

I still think it’s more likely that the Jazz make a small deal at the deadline (unless something crazy comes available) and then look to turn Favors, Exum and draft picks into a 3rd star to team with Rudy, Donovan, Jingles, Crowder, Korver and O’Neale. Maybe keep Rubio at a lower rate as well.

Who would that 3rd star be? So get rid of Favors and Exum, but keep Rubio and O'Neale? Brb, gonna go vomit.

At PF, I agree with you 100%. At C for what we ask of that position in our offense and defense, I think Udoh is just as good. Favors is definitely the better overall player, but I don't think the drop off is that big at all when backing up Gobert.

Favors pick and roll play is huge in the second unit. Udoh doesn't give you that. I really think Favors has been criminally underrated around here, and the sad thing is it's probably because he has been so willing to make sacrifices in his own role for the team. He's really a very good player.

Favors, Exum and two first round draft picks for Bradley Beal. Would you do it?

Yes, but I will break it down:

Favors - we love him, but he isn't absolutely essential especially when it comes down to playoff matchups.
Exum - since we also have Mitchell & Grayson as PG options, we don't need Rubio AND Exum.
2019 1st - will be in the 20's and hitting big on that range pick is tough
2021 1st - should also be in the 20's

Beal is 25, locked in for 2 more years, and is a proven scorer and adequate defender. We have an older roster who is ready to contend now. We are a contender if we add Beal.

Favors has been HUGE in the playoffs the last two years. HUGE!

I'd take Beal but at $25+mill I'm not sure we could afford it. I'm no cap expert but that seems like it would strangle us. We do have our main guys signed though.

I sent this yesterday:

Favors did have one monster game in each of those 1st round series. However, look what he did against Houston last year and Golden State the year before in the 2nd round against a high quality opponent:

Against Houston - 28 points and 14 rebounds in 90 minutes over 5 games.

Against GS - 13 points and 15 rebounds in 42 minutes over 4 games. And remember he said he was a 100% when interviewed after the series so no injury excuses.

Favors is an awesome dude and a good player but that doesn't mean he stays on the floor against great playoff teams who can go small. He is 100% right now and he plays less than 24 mpg and people call for Crowder to start.

We could afford it. But, don’t worry, Washington would barely have time to tell us No due to being avalanched by better offers.

Can we afford Beal? Absolutely. We actually have more money next year with Beal than we would have with Favors + Exum. But just for reference, here is our financial situation heading into next year:

The Salary Cap for 2019-20 will be $109 million (up $7 million from this year). The luxury tax will be $134 million (up $8 million from this year). https://sports.yahoo.com/report-nba-sets-salary-cap-2019-20-2020-21-seasons-020033583.html

For 2019-20, we have the following contracts:
Gobert $25
Favors $16.9 (team option)
Ingles $12
Exum $9.6
Crowder $7.8
Korver $7.5 ($3.5 guaranteed)
Mitchell $3.6
Allen $2.5
Bradley $2
Neto $2 (team option)
Niang $1.6 (team option)
O'Neale $1.6 (team option)
Draft pick cap hold $2
TOTAL: $94 million (if we picked up all team options)

Rubio $22.5 cap hold
Thabo $6.8 cap hold
Udoh $4.4 cap hold

I think favors makes like 17 million and X is right around 10 so......
