2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

LA offered Tobias a $20 million extension last summer. Do we even know if they want to give him $30+ in the summer?

Yes, he has played well this year but it's not like he carries the name recognition of Butler, Kawhi, KD, etc. This is LA we are talking about. He is good, but he is not a star.

They literally offered him every penny they could under the rules... Boston did the same with Kyrie... this little note on the story means absolutely nothing.

AD may miss 2-4 weeks according to Shams... RIP Pelicans playoff hopes.

Just reading the internet and stuff, people are going pretty wild with the Conley hypothetical offers. Don't think Utah can afford to be in the Conely sweepstakes.

Well we will have lots of cap space next year. Unless we can sign a big time free agent, conley might be the best option but how do we get him?

If we could get Exum in the deal to Memphis and address our stretch four needs with Ricky I could get on board with a Conley deal.

Being above the cap may not be the worst thing in the world... could address any leftover needs with MLE.

I don't think a deal for Conley can stand alone. If we move for him, we have to do more because we are leveraging the next few years for him. My plan would be two simultaneous trades and one doesn't happen without the other:

#1: Rubio, Exum, Bradley and multiple 2nd rounders for Conley. Memphis sheds Conley's deal, gets a PG in Exum for the long term with JJJ, and gets young Bradley who might fit next to JJJ long term too. Ideally, there is a 3rd team that wants Rubio that sends Memphis another asset.

#2: We pursue a PF. Favors and picks for Tobias. Or something for Bjelica. Or something for Niko.

Conley only makes sense as a "take a shot at contending" type move. Well, we would need more than just Conley to make that realistic.

No, you waive the players to sign the free agent, after you have chased him and gotten the commitment.
True. Still kind of hard to believe that we would spend the first few days of free agency chasing free agents while also putting Favors and Rubio on hold. And once we do agree to signing that big free agent, the jazz fan homers who love Favors and Rubio will dissect the crap out of whoever that big free agent might be.

Most times, a free agent agrees verbally before actually signing due to the moratorium. That time between verbally agreeing and signing could be brutal.

Thats why I prefer trades. Its abrupt and painful to uproot a guy midseason, but its also an easier, quicker bandaid pull than simply letting a loved player like Favors just walk.

Just like the Otto Porter situation, a deal for Mike Conley will not happen. Dennis Lindsey isn't going to trade for a key piece and give up the Jazz's "valuable" cap space this offseason while giving up what he perceives to be key pieces on the current team.

It isn't happening. Guaranteed.

I’m not sure you understand. We can’t use that valuable space and keep Favs and Rubio... it’s an either or. DL set things up for flexibility and will make an addition now if the opportunity presents itself. It’s unlikely because trades and transactions are somewhat rare by nature.

He may not want to dip into the additional assets, Allen, picks, Exum?, etc. but he’d put Favs and Rubio on the table for the right addition now.

I think this take is spot on.

I'm like 95% sure we don't pursue Conley very hard. It makes more sense to land someone with a bigger window. If you told me that KD left the warriors this offseason I might be more inclined to go for Conley. But if KD re-signs with GS we shoot our shot to just make it to the conference finals maybe and get blown out?

I'd like a younger and potentially less ball dominant backcourt mate for DM... even if in a vacuum they aren't as good of a player as Conley.

We might get involved in the deal somehow but it would be to help facilitate or provide some expirings or take an expiring that might not have much value to Memphis and add something... for instance if Orlando put Ross in a deal to acquire Conley, but memphis doesn't have interest in keeping him and he has more value to a third team... Niko from NO could get involved although with AD out their frontcourt depth is now necessary.

Like how we snaked Crowder in the side part of a bigger deal I think we could get involved.

For my part, I would love to keep Rubio at Exum’s salary (or less, obviously) if he is fine coming off the bench and playing as many minutes as he actually deserves (give him more minutes based on performance in a game, instead of shoehorning him 30 mpg just because).

AKA, if you can trade Exum in any deal that gets us a player we actually want (not suggesting a salary dump), I am interested in that (as it also serves to preserve cap, at least relative to sending expirings).

Honestly... If Ingles could get back to his normal shooting and we get healthy I don't think a move that is a "single" will change us much. We can get more effective by allocating less minutes to the Favs/Gobert pairing... Favs has been so good it's worth keeping him around as the super backup for the regular season. If Dante gets healthy and gives us the bench unit production we had with the Exum/Korver unit.

Unless it's a homerun or a move around the fringes I'm cool standing pat. I was nervous we'd miss the playoffs which really stunts the FA recruiting. I'm not seeing much out there that wouldn't be available in the offseason. I'm on team "don't make a trade unless a no-brainer or homerun comes along". If another Korver deal comes along by all means do it.

A Conley trade is kinda clunky because I'd think we would want to get Exum (45M is a lot to invest in Conley and Exum per year) in the deal, but then what do you do with Ricky? Exum Conley could work in combo too so maybe I'm wrong... I'm just not sure we'd have the financial resources to address the stretch/playmaking forward.

As fun an exciting as trades are... I'm cool unless we get something that is a no-brainer.

For the record, I’m not really interested in pursuing Conley. I think he certainly makes this team better but the return on investment (what it would take to get him + his actual salary + his age + I think Donovan should be playing more “1”, etc) is quite poor.

If we need Rubio and/or Favors for a trade deadline deal and yet we love them so much, why not just try to re-sign them in the summer?

Sure we wouldn't have them for this playoffs, but we could re-sign Rubio or Favors using the MLE.
