What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

32 year old PG costing us a 1st rounder and all financial flexibility.

Brilliant

God you’re like a broken record. And it still doesn’t make you right. Conley would be magnificent here. Is he the only option, clearly not. Are there better options? I think so. But he’d still kill it here for the Jazz and take us to the next level. Just stop lol.

We have a foundation. Yes, Conley takes us to where we need to be. We’re hitchhiking in Kansas, wanting to get to LA, and someone is going as far as San Bernardino, but we’re saying “**** that! Let’s just hitchhike to Topeka and I bet someone there would be going straight to LA!”

In 3 years... maybe.

For as much as you so desperately want it to be true, Conley was never an All Star.

I agree with you though....

I agree... only get all stars... it’s why we should trade Rudy and get a real all star big man like Deandre Jordan. Basically trade everyone except Kyle Korver... he made an all star so he’s the only all star level player we have.

Rubio is a C+ PG. Conley is a B+ PG.

Favors is a pretty darn good player.

Conley does not make us that much better than Rubio AND Favors.

Did you see the effect George Hill had on our team? And the effect when he wasn't here? Imagine that on some super steroids.

Not only is Conley > Rubio + Favors, but the disparity in that equation is magnified via addition by subtraction.

Also... we can sign a backup center for the room exception and be just fine... so there is more math in the equation some are ignoring.

Lots of variable in that equation, and exactly none of them applying pressure on the Rubio/Favors end of the scale.

If a guy is a B+ but he makes everyone else around him a half a grade better that makes a huge change.

I just don’t know how anyone can watch the game last night and think adding Mike Conley wouldn’t be a flat out home run. Picks in the 20s aren’t quite lotto tickets but the chances are stacked against them becoming anything more than a rotation player. Sacrificing a pick or two (after you’ve already missed in FA) to get Conley is a worthy gamble. We’d still be able to add role guys on the fringes (something this front office has been friggin great at). So get the big pieces and let DL find his diamonds in the rough and find a few value FA or Kyle Korver type trades.

Then why don't we bring back George Hill at a third of the cost of Conley, keep our picks and use that extra cap space to improve the 4?

Because, as I said, Conley is Hill on steroids. A very, very rich man’s Hill. Hill averaged 17/4 with us that year. Conley averaged 21/6.5 this year.

I’d be open to that but I think that bridge was burned. I also think Mike is way better than George at this point in their careers.

There are lots of roads to contention... I don’t think we should rule out viable options because the players are older... old players win at the highest levels of the league. They just do.

Your tone of it being a dumb idea we should all move on from was the irritating part... seemed especially weird coming off of last nights game where Kyle and Steph both had great games and are in the same age range as Mike.

All the tea leaves seem to indicate that Kyrie is headed to Brooklyn... almost surely means Dinwiddie or Russell (sign and trade or just waive his rights) will be on a different team. I'm not sure if Kyrie and Spencer would be best friends or worst enemies. They are both intelligent, deep, different dudes. Kyrie and D'Lo doesn't make a ton of sense to me. Either way the Kyrie to Brooklyn domino is good for us. They could sign both Kyrie and Tobias, but all the talk of Tobias wanting a good environment and being a little uneasy with the drama in Philly leads me to think maybe Kyrie wouldn't be an ideal pairing.

I wonder if Brooklyn would go for a Jae plus a 2020 1st for Spencer trade? If we did it July 1 they now have enough space to sign Kyrie while keeping D'Lo's caphold. Could use the 2020 pick to dump Crabbe to Atlanta if they got a yes from KD/Jimmy/Tobias and Kyrie.

We might miss on Tobias, but if you got Dinwiddie and then used space to get Rudy Gay, Niko, or some other stretch 4 option that could work really well. Could opt to keep Favs, though I'm opposed, and have either MLE/BAE to fill in some holes or carve out 10-13Mish with some moves.

You really should read my posts. Conley isnt a bad idea. He would help us on the court. I just don't think he is worth the sacrifices it would take to get him. It would be rhe last big play we had before had the big pay days for Rudy, Donovan and Royce.

He makes us better, but I don't think he makes us that much better. He isn't a dumb idea but one I definitely would avoid.

He makes us WCF better. Especially if it forces us to move on from Favors as our starting 4. Once you get into those echelons, the inertia carries you, so it’s easier to add quality guys and keep things going, but it’s hard as **** to get enough momentum to get that boulder rolling. Conley gets that boulder rolling. Farting on it doesn’t.
