hey, it takes some people a lot of effort to look good, or at least half-way decent
True, but again such efforts are usually physically visible.

Why settle? You're a bright guy with I believe a strong career path? So why settle?
Man, I love that chick. ^^^^
If playing too much "Arkham Horror" is "settling" then my standards are probably a little unrealistic. There are worse things than a girl who is probably a little too into HP Lovecraft.
I'm referring to your response to moe about one's looks. You said you'd "settle for marginally below average." Why?
I don't want to assume anything but are you saying intellectual ability is based on effort or just that there's a perception of that? I agree there's a perception, but I don't think it's really true. Some people are just naturally smarter than other by no real achievement of their own other than luck of the draw. I also think an attractive physical appearance takes a great deal of work. Working out, eating right, etc. Most "highly intelligent" people could not handle the rigors athletes and celebrities put their bodies through to look good.OneBrow said:There is an undercurrent that a person intellectual ability is based in part on effort.
Which of these do you feel is more acceptable to ridicule? Are either of them more acceptable than physical appearance? Why?OneBrow said:Some of that might stem from a confusion of knowledge versus intelligence.
Interesting point. So should it be acceptable for people who can plainly see they have a better physical appearance be free to mock those who are inferior?OneBrow said:Also, since there is no physical sign of intelligence, people tend to assume that they are slightly above-average there, regardless of reality.
Careful, he may take that as an insult to his girl freind and have you infracted.SalmonHobo said:Why settle? You're a bright guy with I believe a strong career path? So why settle?
Trout the only explanation I got is pity.
For the mental side I think we all agree if all things are even you really should've found a mentally handicapped companion, with a good chance of some physical handicap like being deaf because I'm sure your talking is 10x worse then your typing.
Now the physical side they'd obviously need to be blind that goes without saying but then one would have to realize they could still feel you or the lack of you so they would also likely have to have congenital insensitivity or at the very least have some kind of moderate nerve damage.
See it is possible to make fun of a persons mental and physical attributes (or lack of them).

Sirkickyass - while this train of thought was started by our recent lover's quarrel, I AM NOT DIRECTING THIS AT YOU.

I bet he whined about it though. He did so to me twice.
I wrote a good, well thought out response to this... which culminated with me telling JSL to "quit being a bitch", but the damn thing timed out on me.
I'm kinda pissed off now.
But essentially appearance is on the outside, intelligence is on the inside... you can fake intelligence and hide stupidity. You can't fake ugly.
Your opinion, determines your outlook on your intelligence
Others opinions, determines your outlook on appearance.
Which is why a "stupid joke" is easily jested and shrugged off, and a "fat joke" isn't.

But why do you think it is generally more acceptable to ridicule one over the other? Or do you think my whole perception and question is without merit?OneBrow said:I don't recall ever endorsing ridicule or people. I only endorse ridicule of ideas, and endeavor to hold myself to that standard.
