What's new

Just got back from my mission, left Jul 3, 2017!

I was on my mission February 2004 - February 2006. I attended every home game of our post-Stockton and Malone season before I left. There was an 800 number that we’d call that would give us weather, news, and live sports scorers. I forget what it was, but that’s how I kept up. I’d check the box scores on P-day and though I never posted, pretty sure I lurked here. I remember calling an old ward member to find out that we lost Pavlovic (duh) in the expansion draft when we instead protected Collins (who wouldn’t have been picked). Can back toward the end of DWill’s rookie season and really liked what I saw from him, Boozer, and Okur.

Did see the massive media coverage of the Malice at the Palace.

There's a rumor circulating online that the Celtics are considering swapping Hayward and two draft picks for Love.
Interesting. I was just outside and thinking Cleveland would be a good place for him and wondered if they’d take on Love.

Of the two cities to live, I'd much prefer Boston. I'm sure his wife will be pissed. Serves him right for being a dick. Well, he got his money and his video game promo, so he's not hurting. He'll be closer to home too, he's from Indiana.

Dear Jazzfanz,

Hi all! I just got back from my LDS church mission to Germany.* Left Jul 3, 2017, and got back this morning! Had essentially no NBA news at all while I was there--mission rules and all that. So, tell me what's gone on in the time I've left?

Here was the team I remember from the 2016-2017 season. https://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/UTA/2017.html
Joel Bolomboy
Alec Burks
Boris Diaw
Dante Exum
Derrick Favors
Rudy Gobert
Gordon Hayward
George Hill
Rodney Hood
Joe Ingles
Joe Johnson
Trey Lyles
Shelvin Mack
Raul Neto
Jeff Withey

Too bad George Hill decided he could get more money elsewhere a few weeks before I left, that was disappointing (and a wasted first round pick!) but I was tentatively excited about the Rubio signing that happened just before I left. I also remember hoping that would get Hayward to re-sign... annoying that he hadn't actually re-signed before I left on Jul 3, though. How did that play out?

Love Jingles! But his contract seemed excessive... $14 million for 2017-2018? At least it's a descending contract, not an ascending one. Also, probably worth a few extra million to keep Hayward happy.
Gobert was certainly a monster back then, hope that continued.

That Mitchell kid we drafted back in 2017 two weeks before I left seemed sort of promising. Of course, we had to give up Trey Lyles for him but I was never a huge Lyles fan anyway.

Anyway, how did things work out with all of those and the rest of the guys, and what's going on with the curent team? What do I need to know to be caught up to date? Thanks for your help.

*obviously I didn't just return from my mission. But this is basically what happened to me in 1991--left in the offseason of 1989, returned in the offseason in 1991 with absolutely no NBA news in the meantime except I remember someone mentioning to me that Michael Jordan had broken out. (I wasn't as big of fan then as I am now, or perhaps my family would have written me about stuff.) So it was fun to think about what things would be like for someone in that situation today, who left the day before the Hayward Fourth of July Fiasco (FJF), and what people would tell him to get him up to date.

Welcome back Colton and God bless.

Serving a mission today is more like a 24/18 month vacation.

“Back in my day”

- we didn’t have cellphones or iPads. We used pay phones and physical maps. Damn wipper snappers today can sit on their asses and FaceTime lessons.
- we used Internet cafes that had dialup and the church’s crappy email system, ldsmail. Anyone else remember those things?
- we were stuck in the MTC for 9 weeks for most languages. It was 12 weeks if you were going to Asia. Ever been glued at the hip with the same weird dude 24/7??? The church has decreased the time that you’re in the mtc now. Again, things were much harder “Back in my day.”
- no hourly phone calls home. It was mother’s day and Christmas. If you were lucky enough to even find a pay phone that could make international calls. My first year I bought a really expensive pay phone card to call home. I put it into the pay phone and the damn phone ate it. This happened from time to time in Brazilian pay phones. You learned to try an expired phone card before trying a good one.
- no washing machines until halfway through the mission. Today’s missionaries probably have laundry people do it. Or it could just be that I made this up.

- But while I was on my mission I missed the first two years of the Deron Williams era. The first year apparently was worthless. I think ostertag rejoined the team that year. And I think Boozer hurt his hammy and was out for 15 years or something. But the second year was awesome as we made it to the WCF. I watched the epic battles against yao ming and tmac on a video recording my parents made. I had no idea that dfish was even on the team. Then apparently he lied. And apparently the suns were going to beat the spurs until Robert Horry took a cheap shot on Nash.

- Apparently BYU and Utah football was still competitive. One year BYU lost and Beck cried. Then the next year Harline made a catch up in salt lake. And then the third year I was home and saw a 4th and 18 conversion for BYU that led to them winning.

I can only imagine what people coming home will wake up to. The jazz are title contenders and lebron is building a super team in LA.

Best thing to come out of the whole Fisher fiasco, without a doubt:

Second best thing:

That was cool until he lied to us.

i was on my mission for the finals years. both of them. yeeeeeahhhh, and this was before elders could email. (aka, sneak info on the internet while 'emailing')

Lol... it's all making sense now... I get some of my YouTube videos censored on the "general" forums because the "f word" was never said but appeared as a word in the video and Colton blocked it.... hahahahah it's all making sense now

1-800-Tellme?

I served from February '03 to April '05. So I missed Stockton's last game, Karl's defection, the scrappy season, and the terrible 26 win season. I remember burning up the phone calling TellMe the night that Denver clinched the last playoff spot from us in '04 to miss the playoffs for the first time in 20 years, it really hurt. I also played blackjack with a terrible Sean Connery impersonator for at least a few minutes a day on TellMe. Good times.

Yes! Tell Me was it. Were you in the US?

So actually a sad story about Tell Me. A kid in our district’s brother went missing hiking somewhere and he and all of us were aware of it. It later came across the Tell Me news thing about how the bodies of two BYU students were found. I found out a whole day before he did because of that.

Yeah, Illinois Peoria.

Holy cow! I loved that service, felt like a lifeline sometimes. Crazy how fast it died a couple of years later.
