What's new

So we need another 3/4 defender

Yes, get Thabo! I wonder what changed. Tony's been saying Thabo wasn't coming back. Wonder if he couldn't find a team or if Utah decided to be more competitive or what.

At the 4 next season- Derrick Favors will be a free agent, as will Jae Crowder. That's assuming Jarrell Brantley doesn't turn into our best 2nd round pick since Millsap.

Dario Saric will be a RFA next summer, we'll see how he does this year in Phoenix.
Dario and bogey were teammates that played well off each other

I think the roster happened. Mirotic was plan A as they wanted to use some of Favors room to sign another player. When that fell through, Thabo became a consideration again if he'd do a vet min. Just my thinking anyway.

It makes sense, if Thabo is ring chasing - he has as good a chance in Utah as anywhere + he already knows Quin. Given the possible choice between Luc Mbah a Moute and Thabo - that would be a tough choice.

Get em both. It gives us great depth and hurts other contenders in that sense.

I think JWF is headed for a two-way contract is my guess. I think Oni and Brantley make the roster... so that leaves one roster spot. I think I would rather have a steady backup point guard. Haven't looked at the FA list so pickings might be slim. I would be fine with Thabo, but if the shot ain't falling I'd want a short leash... the defense ain't what it used to be.

I have no problem keeping Thabo. But I wonder what the 15 man looks like if we do? Right now I see it as....

Gobert/Davis/Bradley
Green/Niang/Brantley
Bogdanovic/Ingles
Mitchell/O'neale/Oni
Conley/Exum/Mudiay

That's 14. Thabo would be 15. Usually the Jazz carry 14 players with one open roster spot. Do they carry 15 this year? Do they cut Brantley or Oni? Do they put Brantley or Oni on a two way? That wouldn't seem like a good use of the money they spent to buy those picks.

I don't think anyone left at the minimum will realistically make a difference, so I think they should hold off and see what players come available at the trade deadline (Covington, Gordon, Gallinari, Winslow, etc.). By that time we will have a better feel for our own team and other teams so could make a better personnel decisions (both redundancies and needs). Ain't no reason to rush now.

Okay, so let's change the argument completely.

You don't think Exum can impede a Kawhi drive? Exum has elite lateral quickness and 1:1 perimeter defense. And with Rudy covering his back? You may still be asking the wrong questions.
I saw Kawhi driving to the paint and scoring at will against the best and strongest defenders in the league. If you think Exum can do anything to stop it you are really delusional.

Exum might take a charge or two because his *** would hit the ground hard trying to hold up against Kawhi.

I know it's tempting to dismiss one guy or another based on Kawhi and Lebron... but you really can't do that... not many guys can bother them. So we can't pass up viable options because they aren't tailor made to go against the absolute best of the best.

Royce, Green, Ingles and Bojan are a few good bodies to throw at them.

Drawing a charge is a skill Exum has not mastered in his 5 years in NBA.

But sometimes when a smaller guy is so outmatched in strength he goes down so hard that they call a charge.

He did pretty well with it in the past.. moves his feet well... he doesn't do the traditional rotate over and stand while a freight train hits you charge.

So looking at defensive real plus minus for SF position las year...

Thabo is #3, Royce is #5, Joe is #15

Luol Deng also up there a couple years in a row and Kyle Anderson is top 5 two years in a row... with two different teams. I could see Grizz wanting to unload his long term salary... his game is so weird... if he could only shoot the 3.

In summary... I'm cool with bringing Thabo back... even if it cuts into Niang's time/role.

I read an article a few days ago too where it mentioned how Anderson was one of the better players in the league at defending Lebron. Butler seemed to be the best. One or two other guys. But Anderson was mentioned too as well.

I remember him doing well against KD too... Dante for Anderson?
