Why is Luther wright a mistake? They took a flyer on a late first round pick who turned out to have an undiagnosed mental issue. No one could foresee that. They didn't burn assets to get him. Utah even stepped in and continued to pay him to help him through a very difficult time in his life. How exactly is that a blunder? Did they ignore blatant warning signs? No. Did they pass up on some obvious hall-of-famer who was drafted at 30 or something? No. They had a late first round pick that didn't pan out. That never happens, right? I disagree that drafting wright qualifies as a mistake. It was very unfortunate, but really fortunate for him that he landed in Utah because how many other teams would eat the salary to help someone in a devastating life situation?

He was the 18th pick, not a lottery pick. Some people have short memories.

Couple of things with this.

1. He was taken 18th. It does make him a bottom half pick, but not late.

2. You're not going to get a HoF'er usually that late. But players like Chris Mills, Ervin Johnson, Corie Blount and Sam Cassell were available that late, and they managed to stick around the league for a decade or more.

As you mention, dude's bi-polar condition was unknown until he was in the NBA. Considering that, it's hard to really knock it as a bad draft choice an all as history is always sharper in hindsight. Was it a mistake? Yes. But it's one that's hard to knock. Given that a large number of fans consider Wright one of franchise's worst draft choices is more a testament to the stability of them as a whole I think.

The question was who was the biggest draft mistake. Who cares what did didnt happen, it was their worst mistake

I don’t remember him being a lottery pick, but he was definitely a disappointment and a miss. To me it’s always been the Magic pick/trade travesty and the Dominique Wilkins scenario, however they’re both kind of understandable.

The Lopez draft frustrated me a lot because Tony Parker was ready to come over.

However based on missed draft pick scouting I think Jose Ortiz was really bad. I remember the front office gushing over him and he was supposed to be good. He sucked bad. So I would say he’s our worst miss based on draft position, etc.

Honestly the entire decade of 90’s was crappy drafting. I wish we would have drafted Divac, I think he could have been the missing piece for Stockton/Malone.

That's a bad take. That means that every draft pick that doesn't turn into at least a rotation player is a mistake. So 80% of all draft picks are flat out mistakes. So nothing differentiates wright from any of the others, like borchardt or Ortiz or almond. They are all draft mistakes and therefore are all equal. Bad definition.

You're right, he wasnt a lottery pick. I think I kept thinking he was a lottery pick because of his NBA Hoops card i had as a kid, I thought that those "rookie cards" were only for lottery picks. I thought that mainly because the only rookies I knew were high draft picks or players the jazz drafted.

Raul Lopez could have ended up being better than Tony Parker. Before coming over from Spain he looked like a quicker Ricky Rubio, it's just unfortunate that he kept injuring his knee. I remember going to one of the autograph things that the Jazz had before his second season. Me being a dumb 20ish kid I just asked him how his knee was. He seemed awkward and sheepishly said, "oh,... its okay... " Lopez could have been good, but oh well, injuries happen.

I still say the biggest draft mistake was when we traded a pick plus Blue Edwards and Eric Murdock for Jay Humphries and Larry Kryskowiak, where we could have drafted Sprewell.

Stockton / Eisley
Hornacek / Anderson
Sprewell / Russell
Malone / Carr
Ostertag / Foster

It wasn't all bad. It did give us AK, Russell, and Anderson (loved him when I was younger). We shall not mentioned Lord Gatretso drafted 28th in 1995.

Damn. I didn't realize this. We took Blue Edwards that year. Divac would have definitely taken us over the top. It would have been Rony Seikaly on steroids. Or at least Marlboros.

No one is saying he worked out great, just that you have a terrible definition of a bad pick. Was Roy tarpley a bad pick because he eventually had drug issues? You can't apply the lessons of hindsight to the judgement of a given choice at that moment and say duh it was a bad choice. No "duh" involved. Picking Bowie was a mistake, picking Len Bias was unfortunate. Wright falls into the unfortunate category but at the time of the pick no one faulted them for it.

Gobert shouldn’t be a 1. DWill shouldn’t be a 5. Boozer should probably be a 3 (as long as in this scenario he doesn’t get injured or ask for a pay raise.)

I think it should be based on accolades. Multiple All-stars/all-NBA/any annual award (X player of the year) should be 5s. Single all-star, double-figure stats (any single stat) for a season, 3. All else, 1.
