About 95% Official: Kyle Korver is Gone

Yeah Siler is letting the Jazz have it with his comments. I do think it would have been nice for the Jazz to contact Korver and let him know what is going on. He is a good guy and has done a lot of the community. That doesn't mean you sign him, but at least give the guy some common courtesy.

korver is underrated, even by jazz fans. that said, what i blogged the other day about matthews is true of korver, too: he's not a main cog for a championship team, he'd be playing a role. you can't pay your role players major money if you want to win a title. i really think KK could be had for around 3M starting.

right now, our wing rotation for opening night is miles (improved, but still a long way from being a sure thing), hayward (should help if we have opie look-alike contests), matthews (great at his role, but limited) and scrubs. i'm not counting AK because, with our roster as it is right now, AK is going to have to play more 4 than 3. in other words, we're one ankle sprain away from giving othyus jeffers major minutes. we can afford another wing at the price range i'm talking about.
 
# Correction: Due to some confusion between office and cell phones, Jazz finally did connect with Korver's camp today.

#There is interest in bringing back Korver, but Jazz obviously have some other roster issues they have to take care of first.

Why? Hayward hasn't played 1 NBA game yet. I'm all for Hayward, but to not re-sign a key piece of our team because we're putting all of our chips into a draft pick that hasn't played any minutes? Foolish.

They're both liabilities on defense with either of their roles on that end being relegated to guarding the lesser wing of the opposing team. Either sign both and play both less than 24 MPG, or don't sign one if the Jazz hope to maintain what defense they can execute right now. If Hayward was a good defender (he isn't, and he won't be), maybe things would be different. Having both guys on the Jazz kills the D.
 
For some reason I still think Korver will be with the jazz next season in spite of drafting Hayward. D-will seems to have some say in re-signing guys and he's really close to kk. though our focus will be on matthews first and who knows where that takes us with other teams already looking at him.

D-Will cant have it both ways. If he wants to upgrade the team to be a contender, he can't prioritize having buddies over gamers on the team. Korver is'nt worth more than 2-3 mil. He can be a decent little piece for a contending team, that just needs a shooter off the bench for additional depth. Say like the Magic or Lakers or Celtics. But to have him a as a major rotation player at SG playing 24-30 mins a game is disaster.
It would be nice if we could somehow convert CJ and Korver into one single solid player at SG.

Agreed but I wouldn't even pay him 3M. 2-2.5M. If he can't live with that, good riddance.

You can't re-sign people simply out of fear or based on what-ifs. That's what we did with Okur. We were afraid to lose a guy who stretched the defenses with his shooting and was beloved by most knowing full well he sucked on defense and was a major liability who could not co-exist with Boozer (on the defensive end) AND bring a title here. And why did we do that? The fear of fan backlash. The fear of limited team three point shooting. The fear of, Man, how will we be without him? That's no way to build a contender. At least not at that price. His value is not worth 1/6th or 1/7th of team salary.

i'm not saying sign him based on a what-if. i'm saying sign him because:

a) he's underrated - jazz fans don't realize that, when healthy, he's one of our best wings
b) we need wing depth
c) he is the only consistent 3-point threat on the tea
d) 3-4M is not too much to pay for a specialist
e) we are a worse team without him than we are with him

here's our depth chart as of right now, assuming boozer walks but we keep fes and matthews:

memo (injured), fes, koufos
sap, AK
miles, hayward
matthews
deron, price

you're really saying we can't afford to spend role player money on another backup wing?
 
A guy who sets the all-time league record for 3-pt percentage is even more valuable than a greatly treasured commodity like Kapuno, I figure.
