Repressing the Internet, Western-Style

Some British politicians quickly called on the BlackBerry maker Research in Motion to suspend its messaging service to avoid an escalation of the riots

WOW just wow couple of months ago the masses wouldnt suspect this from western goverments while egypt was doing it.

also mods could you change the title tp "Repressing the Internet, Western-Style"

Well yeah, they only want you to use technology to disrupt other countries, not theirs. Control is what Internet 2 and cloud computing have always been about. They have been discussing these things for quite awhile. Not too far away your computer will only consist of a screen and a keyboard and nothing else so they can freely rifle through all your data because it will be stored elsewhere. And of course the Internet will be "cleaned up".

Granted, the people in Britian that were rioting were just aimless hooligans this time around destroying their own neighborhoods and looting shops, but what happens when intelligent people join in these riots as the economy continues to degrade and actually direct their ire at the centers of power; Downey Street, any of the Windsor properties, and The City of London? It will be a bloodbath. It will make Syria look like Free Hugs World. You can kill the useless eaters in Tottenham, Barry Farm, or Harlem, but if you touch the Lords of Poverty(or their properties) in the City of London, D.C., or WallStreet, look out.

I'm no fan of the idiot rioters in the UK who are essentially fighting the system so they can get a new flatscreen in their house, but blocking any internet access is a detriment to democracy.

I also think push come to shove. the goverment of usa will also use this against their own people.
good thing there is no riot or revolt in the usa in the near future

I was reading a paper about the time between the World Wars. There are a large number of economic similarities from then to now. So the global unrest and large number desperate people is growing. We are one Black Friday event from a lot of desperate people with a lot of guns.

So it seems like the world stage is setting up for another world war.

We're in a world war right now. How many countries are we conducting military operations in again?

More like WWWAM (world wide whack-a-mole), as we're just smacking down nations and dictators that annoy us.

war. america is always in wars
if they cant find enemies to fight they manufacture an enemy. eg war on alcohol, war on drugs
you name it

I think I might differentiate between a temporary block due to an extreme situation and a more permanent type of block.

after all, police can set up road-blocks when they're trying to apprehend a criminal, and television and radio broadcasters can interrupt service for special announcements - and the FCC interrupts service periodically for their "this is a test of the Emergency Broadcast Network. Should there be an actual emergency..." announcements

but blokcing like egypt did is right? it was also "temporary block due to an extreme situation".

and what is "extreme situation" how do we define it.

Protecting innocent people and their property is the most important thing. That's Hobbes' Social Contract right there...

i dont call it a war. since the countries the military operations are in are no match for the usa.

The war on terror is the longest war in the history of the USA. We're not just smacking down with no problems. It's an actual war, being fought on several fronts, for many years. And lots of other countries are involved, both with and against us, and both in secret and openly.

We don't formally declare war anymore. This is world war 3.
