Imagine the freak out if Biden ever said anything like this
Are you saying the media would freak out more if Biden said this?
I do think the media should emphasize the percentage of positive tests to total tests each day as another baseline indicator of how the virus is spreading. Some news outlets have, but very few. Those outlets that have published this data are showing a large majority of areas are having an increase in positive/total tests, which shows we haven't shut the virus down, and it continues to spread. With how contagious it is, if we don't control it, it will soon be to the point where we can't do anything meaningful to slow the spread without a complete shutdown.
It is not in dispute that a large number of cases go undetected due to lack of testing (supplies, and willingness to go get tested) and that many people show very few if any symptoms.
Regardless, Trump is correct that the more people we test, the more positives there will be. Doesn't mean we shouldn't be alarmed by those statistics, it is just giving us a better indication of how fast and far it has spread. And with lots of data now showing that immunity varies, but with most stating it only last four months, the idea of herd immunity becomes less likely. What is unknown, is how your body will fight it a second time, even if the antibodies are largely diminished.
In my area, our infectious disease ward is completely full, and Covid patients are now being put in regular rooms. And the increases in my area have not huge. Our hospitals aren't equipped to handle a large outbreak. My wife sees many Covid patients, and has had a few die.
I think the scariest thing is the devastation it can have on healthy younger people, which is not being focused on much. My wife has had a 30 year old patient have a stroke, that was attributed to Covid (evidently it can change clot factors in your blood). Some have major lung damage, and now they are seeing brain damage. It is scary stuff.
Can anyone truly say they are happy Trump has been president during this pandemic? I'm not saying I have confidence that our government would ever do an efficient job handling the pandemic, I think our 50 state systems and our constitution can be a double edge sword in that regard, but I do think pretty much any other person would have handled this better.
To twist a line from Batman:
People voted for Trump, so America has the president it deserves, but not the one it needs right now.
