What's new

2020 Presidential election

What percentage of complaints about The Media are complaints about Fox, MSNBC, and CNN?

Unless you’re deliberately turning yourself into an anthropologist or cultural critic who is working up comprehensive analyses of this corner of the media, then you can literally just turn this **** off. You’ll actually have a better chance at being more informed (if that’s your goal). There’s plenty of high-quality stuff out there. Or, you might finally get unplugged and achieve something you’ve always wanted to do which has NOTHING to do with the breathless national media machine.

Turn it off.

If you’re going to step into the myth of Empowered Consumer Who Gets What He Wants, then please don’t leave out the ****ing Empowered part.
Yeah, there is a lot of really great media out there. If you think media sucks these days that's your fault for not looking. But to be honest a lot of people who say that are not really people that read, listen, or watch news. They are just passing on what others say and read Facebook for their news. Which sadly is a lot of the USA these days.

I’m being serious here:

I really struggle to imagine something stupider than a scenario where someone decides to not vote or cast a protest vote as a way to protest the media. It’s a ****ing totally preposterous scenario. It clearly implies that the correct version of representation—something really worth voting for—would be exquisite at.... regulating speech?? At filtering content for us??

I think Democrats know how to win. They haven’t had any problems since 2016. Since then they’ve flipped state legislatures, governor’s mansions, special elections, and flipped the House. They’re on track to winning back the senate and White House too.

Seek better sources of information please.

I had an earlier post about it. Biden is guilty by association. The radical left is becoming so absurd, and so indefensible, that its pushing a lot of middle aged white people back into Trump. And there are a **** ton of middle aged white people that were or are on the fence who are just going to vote Trump to stick it to the dumbasses on the left. I know it's not Biden's fault, but he's the Dem so he is guilty in a lot of peoples minds. And it's 100% the media, which everone knows is a majority liberal, and the people who have devoted their lives to being anti - Trump. Those are the people responsible for pushing people into Trump.

This is fact free nonsense. You need better information. Biden’s lead over Trump has been between 6-10 pts over Trump for over a year. Claiming that he’s “radical left” or “scaring voters to Trump” is nonsense that has no evidence to back it up.

Please seek better sources of information.

No candidate has had this steady of a lead since 1940 (when polling began).

but sure, Biden is far left, scaring voters, shy trump voters, Bla bla bla.

True, Democrats cannot get complacent. But let’s also not ignore political science. I know many in this country have fallen into the habit of doubting experts and expertise. But it’s just not healthy. Masks prevent transmission just like unpopular presidents lose er-elections.

Excellent Post. Many who whine about “the media” are merry regurgitating crap from Facebook. They’re not actually consuming reliable media or news outlets. Usually, it’s from people too lazy to pay for the news. I can’t begin to count the number of people who whine about paywalls, as if journalists should work for free.

Does your brother know how a remote works? I’m sure there are other ways to turn off the media, too.

I hope it isn’t too long before we all look back and realize how ridiculous 90% of our comments about “the media” were. There’s a huge percentage of them that sound PRECISELY like a slightly modified version of “I CANNOT TURN THIS **** OFF! Does this not Entertain you?! But why are people making THOSE decisions when THESE OTHER ONES would be more satisfying/Entertaining.”

To all of you Entertainment Addicts:
I’m sure it would take you less than a week to find a mix of perspectives that provided you the solid reporting you needed to satisfy your civic duty to be informed. You maybe should do some meditation about whether your mix contains enough local stuff, and about whether it’s sufficiently freed from the over-broiled and intentionally addicting national news. But you’re in control of this mix. The disquiet and weariness you’re feeling can be redirected to better ends.

You need to realize that “the media” has become such a broad term in the last 20 years that we’re still trying to catch up with it. It’s reached stratospheric levels of ubiquity—meaning, it’s expressing a HUGE bandwidth of the total possible expression. It’s very saturated. Therefore, it’s impossible to say something like “The Media has all gone completely berserk,” because simultaneously to any berzerkness there are people who are bringing some kind of cohesion and order. Jerry Seinfeld has pushed back on the phrase “Have you seen _______? It’s literally all over the internet”—because the whole idea that a thing is being covered ALL OVER the vastness of the internet is patently ridiculous.

Turn off the media that’s driving you nuts and find some that engages you in a better way. I’ll leave “better” up to you. It’s just ****ing crazy how trucked some of you are..... and how willing you seem to be to put someone else’s words in your own mouth, and pass as if these are your conclusions. Stop doing that, pls.

Good post

I’d like you add a few things here.

1. Those who claim to be moderates, usually side one way or another. Judging by Beer’s brother’s age, race, education level, and geography, we can make pretty accurate assumptions about which side he usually sides with despite identifying as a “moderate.”

2. Republican moderates typically identify the far left as the mainstream Democratic Party while ignoring the extremists from their own party. You see this all the time with Republican moderates who are “fed up” with AOC and Bernie Sanders, ignoring the fact that the more moderate Biden is more aligned with the mainstream of his party. Meanwhile, these Republican moderates will ignore extremists like Nunes, Trump, Gym Jordan, Steve King, and associate Romney and McCain with being the true voices of the Republican Party.

3. Polarization is not equal. We see asymmetrical polarization with the right wing becoming increasingly offensive to most Americans and increasingly extreme with both its rhetoric and attitudes towards democracy. It’s not a conservative worry anyway, it’s a reactionary party that really seems to have lost its faith in democracy.

Learn how to read. I didn't say Biden was radical left. Or that he is scaring voters into voting Trump.

Correct. You were putting forth a different goofy illusion. A wildly-overdramatized sort of scenario.

1. I wouldn't have even called him a moderate until hearing his Trump stuff, which I don't agree with FYI. I would have called him a staunch liberal. He said he would have voted Warren, Bernie, Yang, Gabbard ..... but Biden and Harris inspire no confidence. Which I can't argue.

2. AOC and Bernie are about 10,000 times more visible than Nunes, Jordanm King. So it's not hard to see why those people are ignored in comparison to them. AOC, Bernie, etc ... are shoved down their throats.

3. I disagree with this. The far right has always been offputting. The far left, has grown increasingly intolerable.

They’re not “shoved down their throats.” See earlier posts. These people play a significant, agentive role in allowing something to be “shoved down“ their throats.

You have so little respect for people.

I think it's interesting that you say Nunes, Jordan and King are not very visible, while AOC and Bernie are shoved down our throats.

I get 90% of my news from the newsfeed on my phone, which pulls stories from dozens of different sources. I think places like CNN have given Jordan, Nunes, King a lot of attention, at least as much as Bernie and AOC.

Where I see A LOT of attention on Bernie and AOC is FOX News and then to a MUCH greater extent than even FOX News is National Review, Breitbart, and the like. So for your perspective to be that AOC and Bernie are shoved down our throats it at least points me to an assumption as to where you get most of your information, which isn't necessarily directly from Breitbart, National Review, but just as likely from facebook posts, where those far right news outlets dominate.

He is fully deluded. Every time he makes a broad conclusion about “the media, in general” you can get a clear glimpse of his delusion.

If we want to grant the possibility that somewhere in the USA there’s a segment of the adult population that is having information of some kind “shoved down their throats,” then we have to acknowledge that this isn’t happening without help from, and continuous input by, one or more algorithms. In other words, through the use of artificial intelligence tools.

Any blowhard culture critic who doesn’t take this into account in his analyses has given himself away.

And the idea that there’s some broad political slant in the operating algorithms toward propaganda favorable to Bernie and AOC is gawddamn hilarious.

IDK, I have watched less than 1 hour of Fox News in my entire life. I get almost all my stuff from youtube ( Kyle Kulinski, Jimmy Dore, Andrew Pakman, Sam Sedar, Ben Shapiro, Tim Poole, etc .....

I have never ever been on Breitbart or National Review. Almost never ever ever get on FB and certainly don't give AF what my dumbass high school classmate is posting. So .......

YouTube has one of the most problematic histories—in terms of algorithm function—in the entire history of the internet. You’ve been silo’ed.

If you all haven’t listed to the podcast (8 total episodes, I think) called RABBIT HOLE, then I enthusiastically suggest you check it out.

Yeah, there have been times I've followed a suggested link to a youtube video, end up watching some portion of a conspiracy theory BS video and then there it is when I'm on youtube, a slew of other crazy conspiracy BS. It makes me gun shy to ever watch things conspiracy idiots urge me to watch.

But I follow a couple people who do Subaru videos and so I get a bunch of other subaru stuff suggested to me. I follow a few tech channels, so again, a bunch of tech stuff. If you are getting political content from youtube you can bet that you are being fed all the additional videos that will be more than enough to confirm what you "learned" in your previous videos.

Seriously, bro, listen to RABBIT HOLE. I guarantee that you’ll want to hear what it says.
