What's new

Hank Williams and ESPN

This is one of those situations where IMO both sides look like douchebags.

Hank comes off looking like an ignorant good 'ole boy from the south (probably because that's EXACTLY what he is), and ESPN looks like over-reaching PC clowns.

So, if a singer on ESPN compared Mitt Romney to Goebbels, everyone on this board would think it would be a bad thing for ESPN to let that singer go?

And lost in all of this is that nobody would have noticed that Hank Jr.'s song was not played. That song and the godawful Faith Hill Sunday Night song are both tired. Time for something new.

I love Monday night football and his songs. What he said was dumb, but why take his music off of Monday night football?

Wrong. Dude, ever since I was a kid I loved Monday Night football and always loved listening to Hank before the games. Hell, my wife hates football and even likes the Monday night football songs. It wont be the same without him.

That's because you weren't around for classic stuff like this:

It wasn't that dumb. He just used hitler and netanyahoo as examples of polar opposites...an example everyone can understand.

Way to politicize Football!

Yeah, but there's a general rule of thumb that says you never compare anyone to Hitler. Anyone.

Yeah, but there's a general rule of thumb that says you never compare anyone(except Republicans) to Hitler. Anyone.

I fixed it for you.

During the 2008 elections, Madonna used the appropriately-titled song "Get Stupid" to display images of Sen. John McCain alongside Hitler and Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe, while showing Obama alongside Mahatma Gandhi and John Lennon. And, far from receiving the same fate as Hank Williams, Jr., Madonna appears to be a shoo-in to perform at this season's Super Bowl.

Here's a question that could probably open a can of worms:

What if Hank had made the Hitler comparison about a white President? Does he still catch as much flak for this if he had said something similar about George W. while he was in office? I hate to say it, but I think ESPN saw a guy who basically personifies the image of American redneck making radical comments about a black president and were worried about not doing anything and facing backlash from people who may play the race card.

Yeah, because there's just so few examples of differences out there the public can understand.

Really?

Be careful for what you wish for, you just might get it.

Here comes Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, or Britney Spears.

I have no confidence that ESPN will actually get half decent replacement.

Just look at the dumbass halftimes for the superbowl...

Everyone gets up in arms about freedom of speech forgetting that espn is exercising theirs in which they become over zealous left wing nut jobs.

Typical pot calling the kettle [insert politically correct word here]

Really. No one gives any sort of practical **** about an intro song. A person is lucky to land such a 'gig', the networks aren't lucky to land some dime-a-dozen, non-impact on ratings. People watch football to watch football, not to see who can battle it out as to who is the hottest milf or dumbest yelling redneck.

Or hell, I don't know. Maybe I'm nuts because I watch football to umm... how do I put this... to... umm... watch football?
