Why the hell do people even protest? I mean, I'm all for freedom of speech, but I've never had the urge to get up one day and protest/riot/show the world I'm super pissed at something. If you have, please explain why? Was it worth it or fulfilling?

Yeah, as far as what happened to injure the guy initially, you can't really pass judgement since it doesn't show what happened. However, the douchebag that threw a flash grenade directly at the guy lying on the ground should at least be fired, and probably should even face criminal charges.

I personally think these protests are a joke, and really have little sympathy for those who choose to put themselves in these situations, but there's still no excuse for cops to go all Rodney King on these people.

Scary how far down the slippery slope we are. While I don't agree with the occupiers I feel for that person and his family. I also feel that cop overstepped his "duty" to serve and protect. Helping a down protestor is not harming anyone or anything.

LOL... I imagine that had this happened to someone wearing 18th century clothing with a poster of "Don't Tread on Me" would have the evangelical and anti-government radical right wing crowd pretty upset. The story would then be used to bash Obama and show you how the government is trying to take away freedom in a Communist way. Comparisons to Stalin would be made.

I think the protesting is a great example over how discouraged and upset America is in general, with its political system. Personally, watching tea baggers trying to distance themselves from this movement while Foxnews tries to discredit it is pretty hilarious. They bash them for not having a clear defined message with politicians backing them... LOL. Neither did the tea party for a good year or two. And even today, their message isn't very clear.

I hold the wait and see position on this one. I see their anti-corporation stance as encouraging that we might get back on the right track. Whether this movement will gain any steam and have much of an effect politically, we'll wait and see.

I think it's usually good when people exercise their rights. And it's usually bad when cops overstep theirs.

This is typical police behavior. Assuming the person who threw the tear-gass cannister at the people helping the downed man is ever identified, the most he'll face is a suspension, and probably not that.

To me it depends on a couple of things:

Where were they protesting?

It isn't legal to protest everywhere. If you are protesting in a illegal place and you are ordered to dispurse you are opening yourself up to anti-riot tactics.

Is it a protest or a riot?

Also why did everyone gather again around the injured person? Getting together in a big group like that was inviting another tear gas grenade. Were they that sure that the injured person wouldn't get medical attention in a timely fashion?

This. Regardless of your opinion on the protests, the police action should be frightening and upsetting.

That cop should be fired and arrested. FYI, the guy on the ground (from being hit with either a flash grenade or a teargas round) is a vet who served 2 terms in Iraq. He's in critical condition right now.

When this was happening in the middle east, we were ready to go to war to protect the right of the people to protest (and we did in Libya). It's pretty hypocritical to say these protesters are doing something wrong in the supposed land of the free.

Their main message is to take the money out of politics. The government is bought and paid for, and the people who own the government are not looking out for the best interest of this nation. It's time for the government to be owned by the people again, and that is the main message from occupy.

I agree with The Thriller, if this happened at a tea party movement Fox News would be telling everyone to bring their guns to the next protest.

If you don't have a riot or protest control people tend to get out of hand real fast. People attending those things should know they're in danger. If the dude got hit on the dome to prevent a riot, violence, vandalism, etc, he should have thought about the consequences before attending. Unless the cop purposely tried to hurt the guy, I don't think action should be taken against him, then again, I'm not exactly sure of what "really" happened either so I don't really know.

I don't know how he "really" got hit in the head with a flash grenade or tear gas round (which is what put him on the ground in the first place), but you can see the cop throw a flash grenade right next to him while he is laying on the ground.

I don't think we need to be using force to "control" these protests unless they actually do get out of hand. There have been zero reports of looting, violence, drugs, or any other crimes. The only violence and crime coming from these protests (the one in Oakland included) is from the police getting violent with the protesters and arresting them on bogus charges (such as unlawful assembly, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, etc).

Yeah, but I was working while I watched it. From what I remember, some guy got carried off by a bunch of screaming people. Did it show him actually get hit ( I can't watch the video now).
It shows the guy laying on the ground, bleeding from his head, a few feet in front of several cops who are just standing there behind the barrier. Several people run up and try to help him, and one of the cops (from a few feet away) throws a flash grenade right next to the guy laying on the ground.

It doesn't show how the guy got injured initially. What it does show is the guy lying injured on the ground, a group of people gather around to try and help the guy, and a cop lobs a flash grenade directly into the crowd. From my perspective, that's using potentially deadly force against someone lying injured on the ground. Those flash grenades are not meant to go off right next to someone's head.

This didn't upset anyone?

Yeah, ok. Yesterday, I watched the video from the link that was posted. It was completely different than the video posted on jazzfanz. That was messed up and the cop should to be charged with something. What a douche.
