2010 World Cup South Africa

Will anyone else be watching this for the next month and a half like me? The United States chances of getting out of the group stages are pretty decent. It will be tough for us to beat England but it's not impossible. I'd be happy with a 1-1 tie, and it would do them good to score a goal in the first game.

I will also be following the Uruguay and Mexico teams. Although they both have to deal with the host country which is never easy. It would do our region good if Mexico got out of the group stages and I had a friend way back in the day that ws was Uruguay so that is might sentimental favorite.

A pretty big pre-world cup match is being played today in Philly versus Turkey ( ESPN 11:30 MST). We could be seeing the starters for the June 11 USA-England match.

Prediction for the starting 11

Altidore - Dempsey

Beasley - Clark-Bradley- Donovan

Boca- Onyewu-Goodsen-Dolo

Howard

Subs: Fehilhaber,Findley & Holden.

Come on, now. Everyone knows the World Cup is a joke. They can't even sell out a match. Total joke.

That thread has been archied! I was trying to start a real World Cup Thread. Thanks Youngblood....you the Fother Muckin man for Archining this one to.

It looks like the starters for the USA-TURKEY match will be:
Altidore
Dempsey

Feilhaber - Donvan
Clark -Bradley
Boco-Goodsen-Demerit-Spector
Howard

a 4-4-1-1 ? A weird formation for the USA I wonder if ESPN just messed up the formation. We typically play a 4-4-2

Board needs to stay organized, sorry. Just ignore Archie.

Getting back on topic, I like the U.S. chances to get out of the group, then it depends on who they draw after that. They seem to play better in the underdog role though.

The question to me is who plays up with Altidore with Davies out? Dempsey or someone else?

They may be experimenting a little bit? I've also read they are considering the 4-5-1 on Insider...because their strength is in the midfield. Seems conservative to me though.

It looks like they are testing Dempsey out up there. I'll take a guess that the first sub might come in for a midfielder and move Dempsey back into the wing position. I would have to guess that Findley or Gomez would come in for the 2nd forward. Holden is a great option off the bench as well.

We do have some pretty good options in the midfield with very little experience in the forward position. I do hope BB plans on Onyweu playing in the second half. If he can't go after playing on tuesday he never should have been choosen for this team, no matter how good he is. If he isn't fit and healthy, ala ching, he shouldn't get a plane ticket.

fantastic match, USA up 2 -1, torres and findley were subbed in for the second half and played really well. torres especially. What'd you guys think?

This thread is full idiot hypocrites that dissed the World Cup back in '06 and now feel like standing up for it just because Archie is making waves. Not that I'm defending Archie. That's impossible. But a bunch of people that don't know anything about soccer now representing it in this thread is just stupid. What a bunch of vultures.

And as far as our team this go round our back line is weak without Gooch at full strength. I don't like Buddle and Gomez as much as Eddie Johnson. Findley can do some of what Davis does (did it yesterday by stretching the defense) but not as good and isn't as good a finisher as Davis.

And if we make it to the Elimination Round it will be as the 2nd best team behind England which means we probably face Germany as our first elimination game.

So like I said. World Cup. Meh.

I think the more pertinent question is about style of play rather than formation. While their strength is in the midfield, their real strength is using speed to make runs out of the midfield. It could be a very offensive thinking 4-5-1. Findley was essentially used as a midfielder for a good portion of yesterday's game, who used his speed to make runs to the end-line. Now if he'd just pass it before he crosses the line.

It's sad that because I think the World Cup, soccer in general is a joke, that people start throwing out personal insults, and posting my picture on here to make things personal. Hey look, I get it, I know there are a lot of fans on here and that soccer is still the most popular sport in the world, but let's look at a couple of things. There are tons of people who say the NBA is a joke cause of officiating. Why are soccer fans so sensitive? Also, it seems like everybody and their two sisters have become soccer fans since Real Salt Lake won the championship last year. And soccer is ripped on by most sport fans in the country where we live (Yep, soccer is still below hockey in the US.) Can someone please inform me when soccer became so cool because pretty much everyone I know, except a few, think soccer is lame. I still think South Africa is a joke of a place to host such an event, them having to cut ticket prices by close to 70% proves that. Plus, it's probably the most dangerous place thinkable. I will be very surprised if there isn't some sort of terrorist act during the games. On another note, the World Cup ball is a joke. Theres' an article on espn about how players are compairng it to one that is bought at a supermarket. Anyways, thanks for the insults and posting my picture cause I have a differen't opinion. Stay classy San Diego.

I consider myself a converted soccer fan over the last few years, who used to think watching the sport was boring. But the more I watched it, the more interesting it became for me. It's never going to appeal to some sports fans, because it's never going to be a scoring fest like basketball or football (for the most part). It requires patience and appreciation for other parts of the game besides scoring goals. I enjoy a spectacular pass or save just as much as a goal. Everyone is entitled to enjoy whichever sports they want, I don't care. I think the reason why some soccer fans are sensitive about it is because they are constantly told how much soccer sucks as if they can't decide for themselves. Most of those people who tell us it sucks hardly ever give it a chance anyways. It gets annoying. That's how I was with some of my friends before I watched it regularly.

And for someone who supposedly doesn't care very much about the WC (which you are making generalizations about before it is even played, which is ridiculous) or soccer in general, you sure seem to spend a lot of time finding all of these articles highlighting the negatives of it. You wouldn't like the NBA or any other sport if you focused on the negatives all of the time either, because every sport has PLENTY of them. But, you've already decided that it is lame, so you are going to focus on all of the flaws. If you don't care, why waste your time debating about it with soccer fans?

That's true. Findley was effective for the most part. I just questioned it because sometimes Jozy doesn't seem to be as comfortable as the lone striker.

Who cares. It's the f'ing World Cup. It's the ultimate event to attract casual fans or people who want to see what the fuss and excitement is all about.

Poor guy. Did you get the sand out of your beaver or do you want to cry some more?

Hold on... are you insinuating that soccer's popularity could be EXPANDING?

Can someone please inform me when soccer became so cool because pretty much everyone I know, except a few, think soccer is lame.

I think that reflects on your friends more than on the game of soccer. You should open up beyond your world of Gold's Gym, A&F white boys.
