He just was too lazy to consistently keep at that level.

It's not that he was lazy, it's that he never loved basketball in the way most NBA players did. He was just a country kid who happened to be 7'2 and reasonably coordinated. He made 50 million doing it, but he never loved it. Which is okay. By all accounts, he sounds like a great, great guy.
