Danny Ainge out as Celtics GM — Jazz linked as potential landing spot

Ainge has hit on some big moves but his last 5 years of picks has been pretty bad outside of the top 5. I wouldn't be a fan of bringing him in really in any capacity. You can have too many voices in a front office and pulling in multiple directions can leave you aimless.

After pulling off the Nets heist he has squandered away all of those assets. Essentially being left with just Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Those two alone aren’t good enough to make the Finals.

Outside of those two picks the Celtics have been absolutely terrible drafting in the 1st round.

The "to the Jazz" speculation is based entirely on his purchasing a home in Provo. I'm not sure one purchases a home in Provo to work for the Jazz.

Sounds like he wants to retire to me.
He might "consult"... which is whatevs imo... not like he's a guy who has a bunch of warm relationships around the league. I just don't want him around.

This article talks about a Ryan Smith / Danny Ainge connection. Also mentions DL perhaps looking at Houston. Beyond this, what I will mention that I haven't said yet is that the biggest move that (in my opinion) DL may perceive as a threat is Wade coming on in the ownership group. I do believe that the way the Millers ran things is that DL got to be the guy that everyone put their trust in and he was the big fish that everyone in the organization looked up to. You throw an owner into the equation who is an all-time NBA great and a lot of people are going to be looking at that guy and weighing his input, even if he's only on the fringes.

Interesting take... DL would have to be crazy to join the Houston Fertittas.

I think DL would stay as long as he can but maybe Ryan wants his own guy in that position? Not sure Wade really factors in a whole lot... if he does I'd expect Shane Battier or someone up and coming to end up taking the job. Ainge has really proved he struggles to make the moves that finish the job. He had heaps of assets and space and came up short. He's not the guy we need imo. If DL is let go I'd be interested to see if more people agree he's a little sloppy.

I don't mean that Wade has a ton of input. What I mean is that DL can be the resident expert. If someone questions a move, DL can fall back on "well, I'm the GM and I'm paid to have this expertise, etc." but that tends to fall apart when someone comes into the organization who knows a lot more than you do about certain (but not all) things. It's like on Office Space when the one guy kept trying to rationalize his job of being a middle man to the two Bobs.

Before the Bobs came around, he could just blow smoke up everyone's ***.

Ainge has already had two heart attacks. Let's just let him retire in peace. He's 12 year's older than DL.

A little consulting should be OK, but no way should he be in a high-profile position with the Jazz, imo.

Ahhhh got ya. He's surrounded himself by his dudes and now the Bobs are here... Wade might say to Ryan "oh... that's how you do it here... not how Pat would do it but what does he know?"

Wow. A ton of consensus on this one.

First off, I am sure it's a consulting position for his retirement in Utah. Not replacing DL or Zanik or countless other options.

Is it a great hire? Prolly not. Can you access connections with him as a confidant that you otherwise couldn't? Sure can. Just ask Jerry West and Pau Gasol.

For that reason, I would say you can never have enough consultants in this league. I hate Ainge, but if it helps us bring in talent... meh.

Don't need him. He's strained his relationship with other GMs and his recent comments have likely strained relationships with the players themselves. Someone who dismisses issues that the players deeply care about (and ownership says they care about) is not the move.
