No. In Office Space, he had a position that wasn't needed, but wasn't questioned. The Bobs asked those questions. The culture of our club has historically been fairly patriarchal, even down to local media, and those in power have been given a significant amount of latitude without questioning. This isn't to say that DL is some huge buffoon (and I've never advocated replacing him), but our organization definitely has been able to set controls on what ideas come inside the organization (any organization would seek to do this) and when you slip in something that comes from an outside channel, particularly through a new part-owner (hell, the main owner, too) and that comes with someone who possesses a massive amount of basketball capital, it can make it feel like it's harder to control the influence of ideas. Just my opinion on the situation.
 
Heard something that made this even more of a "no" from me. Apparently Danny wanted Tanner Ainge to take over the FO in Boston at some point, so he may go somewhere looking to do something similar (according to the bill simmons Russillo podcast). So an old dude coming in to gift his kid a GM job... I ain't signing up for a Colangelo situation. Tanner may be homies with Ryan...

Someday we may long for the days of DL... I hope this is all just some smoke.
 
I feel like I'm going crazy seeing some local media guys vouching for Danny Ainge, citing his relationships with other GM's and executives.

I'm pretty sure Ainge's "relationships" with other front offices are not a point in his favor.

Gross. There aren't many things more disgusting than nepotism.

No. Dude couldn't even do his son's congressional campaign a PR solid by giving, at no cost, a TPE. If he ain't going to help his son out then, don't let him help his son out now.

I think it came out way too quickly. Obviously you can have contingency plans and trying to explore what doors may be open in advance, but Boston just lost last night. Things can happen quick, but come on. Probably too much smoke.

Lol. I'll qualify by saying that I'm not sure who you're referring to, but they're probably just trying to read the room. They probably assume there must be legs to this (they have worse sources than those of us with access to Twitter) so they're trying to do what you do in this market and spin the positive on any move.

They've been working on this for months... which means he's likely had some feelers out with our organization.

The fact that it has come from multiple sources and that he may be living out here too leads me to believe it doesn't come out of thin air. IDK but I hate it.

Yeah... The guys I know that run family businesses are some of the worst try hards ever. They are handed everything and act like they built the company from nothing to something. Real born on third base energy.
 
I admittedly didn’t know much about Ryan Smith when he pulled a sneak attack and purchased the Jazz. When that happened and I read a little bit about him, I was slightly worried. It’s no secret how deep his BYU ties are and how a lot of relationships/friendships were with folks like Danny and Tanner Ainge, Taysom Hill, etc. I wondered if we’d start to see a parade of BYU cronies being handed important jobs in this franchise. I should say that for the record, if a former Ute purchased the Jazz and he starting hiring up the likes of Jim Boylen and Larry K, I’d be equally distressed.
Since that time, I think Ryan has put on an absolute master class in running an NBA franchise and positioning the Utah Jazz to achieve more than ever before. The D-Wade partnership was a stroke of genius and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I could be proven wrong, but I really don’t see Ryan jeopardizing this franchise just because he has not personal relationships with guys like Ainge.
This Ainge to Utah conjecture is already annoying. It’s nothing more than lazy connect the dots by media personalities trying to get clicks. I haven’t really seen any other source than the “It would make sense” mentality. I also don’t think DL is in any hurry to leave the team he’s built for 10 years right as it’s about to peak, in favor of joining the Houston train wreck. It will be nice when this is over with and out of the news cycle.
 
Hoping this is the same kind of smoke as when the Jazz were looking at hiring Jim Boylen.
 
I just think it is the media need to fill air time. Ainge looks like he is ready to retire and why but a house in Provo if he is going to work for the Jazz? He may do some consulting work but I would be shocked if he was the GM. Maybe DL wants to move back to Texas, I think he is from there. I think all this GMs hate Ainge comments are funny because most people from SLC hate Ainge. I do not believe that all the GMs hate Ainge. He is a tough negotiator and that is what you want when your are trying to acquire assets or players. I am not for bringing him in as a full-time GM but if the Jazz want to have his expertise in negotiating trades I wouldn't mind it.

I do feel like Ryan has been good and deserves a little benefit of the doubt here. I could see him wanting to make changes after being involved for a year but hopefully he doesn't go the good ol boys route.
 
According to Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer. The Ainge to Utah stuff is very much one sided interest, on the part of Ainge. I would guess if he gets any role it would be minimal.

A quote from an article:

"There have been rumblings for months that Danny Ainge would leave the Celtics. League sources say he was eyeing jobs in Utah, where many members of his family live, or Portland, his home state and another franchise that could undergo change if the Trail Blazers lose in the first or second round."

He mentions Portland as a landing spot if they flame out in the first round. He basically says that's what he heard a couple weeks ago, and that he is friends with Ryan, and maybe a minor role could be possible, he also mentioned there's no guarantee he even gets a position anywhere immediately. Basically it doesn't sound like the Jazz plan on hiring him if O'Connor is right, the interest in Portland and Utah are coming from Ainge himself.

Remember in the early 2000s, when there were rumors about Huntsman buying the Jazz and replacing Sloan (who would retire in this scenario) with Rick Majerus? I don't know where those rumors started or how realistic they were, but it definitely was interesting - and very similar to the concern you're pointing out here.
